Mufflers and Tailpipes

Mufflers and tailpipes are components of an exhaust system. The tailpipes guide the exhaust away from the engine and into the muffler. The muffler reduces the noise coming from the engine through the tailpipe.

What are the top reasons a check engine light will come on in a 1998 Lexus gs400?

Check engine or sometimes called MIL (malfunction indicator light) is mainly related to emissions. The TOP reasons are oxygen sensors and smog related items. Unplug your negative battery post for a minute or two and see how long it takes for the light to come on again. On mine it was a sensor and came on within about 3-5 miles of city driving.

What is diesel exhaust fluid?

It is a solution of pure water and 32.5% urea. It is injected into the exhaust stream to lower emissions.

What is the advantage of using dual exhaust?

if this is a guy then I'm not impressed that you couldn't figure ths one out=]..I'm a 14year old girl and i know this...dual exhuast better helps to keep a car(vehicle) from overheating and burning up (most useful for sports cars=])....your welcome=]
Your engine must waste some of its power, to push the exhaust gases out of the combustion chamber. The more restrictive the exhaust system, the more power is wasted doing this chore. Dual exhausts will help over come some of this power loss by being less restrictive. To resolve this problem completely, install a set of headers first, then drive it down to the muffler shop and let the pro's work their magic.
Headers, by design, scavange the exhaust gases from the combustion chamber, leaving all the power that the engine produces available to go to ground.
After doing this, the first thing you will notice is that you don't have to push on the gas pedal very hard, to get the car going. The power that used to be wasted, pushing out exhaust gases, is now going to the ground. Improved gas mileage comes along with it. So the moral is: Do it once, and do it right

What would cause a good amount of water to come out of your tailpipe and white smoke?

The reason for this is that your motor is burning antifreeze ether from a bad head gasket or cracked head paul It all depends on if the smoke disapears right after it goes out or if it stays and if it is in the winter or summer. If it disapears and it is in the winter there is probably nothing wrong its just like when you breath in the winter time. The water I figure from reading other questions on this site it just condensation. That depends also if it is just a heavy drip for a little while or a poring out of water. Now if it smokes in the summer all the time then you might have a problem.

If you install Cobra Dragster pipes on a 2005 Honda Sabre VT1100C2 will you have to rejet the carbs?

Odds are you will not have to rejet, pipes alone do not change the fuel mix sufficiently to require it, fi bikes are even better at making the transition of new pipes. if you experience excessive back fires or unpleasant pops try marbling/closing off your reed valves which feed back from your air intake box, this will cure that problem. In the end the test is performance, that can only be determined by the rider, best of luck.

Where oil is coming from in 2002 envoy engine?

Mine was leaking from the Oil Sensor/Oil Switch. It can be found right above the oil filter on the IL6. I used a 1-1/16 deep socket to remove it.

Will your car last a week driving with a blown head gasket?

It may last but be assured every mile you drive is doing damage. Coolant is a very poor lubricant and driving a car with a blown head gasket for one week will cause serious damage to bearings, rings, and cylinder walls. Park this car until you can have it repaired.

Will you need welding equipment to replace your muffler?

You certainly CAN weld an exhaust system, but generally you only need to use clamps to hold new pipes and mufflers together.

Welding provides a better connection, and prevents the slight leakage that sometimes results from clamped exhaust connections, but if you don't have a high quality wire feed welder, acetylene welding seems to work a little better for exhaust systems; the cheaper wire feed welders just don't do a good job.

Where can I purchase stainless steel exhaust tubing?

What would cause the check engine light to come on also the car smells funny what could be the problem also there is no heat or air blowing out of the vents you have a 2000 VW beetle?

Is it a fish smell or a rotten egg smell ? FISH SMELL COULD BE A BAD HEATER CORE, THIS WOULD CAUSE YOU NOT TO HAVE HEAT IN THE CAR , BUT IT MIGHT NOT CAUSE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON UNLESS MAYBE CAR IS LOW ON COOLANT. ( THERE MIGHT BE A LOW COOLANT SENSOR TO TRIGGER CHECK ENGINE LIGHT) ROTTEN EGG SMELL COULD BE A CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER , WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE OXYGEN SENSOR TO TRIGGER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, BUT IT WOULDN'T CAUSE THE LOSS OF HEAT.

What causes white smoke to be emitted from the exhaust during start up on a 1995 Suburban?

the smoke is probly actually blue but appears to be white

blue colered smoke is oil burning after vehicle sits oil drips into the cylinders from the valve guide seals causing it to burn and smoke upon start up of vehicle

Why do white smoke emit when after i depress hard on accelaration at idle?

You may have a blown head gasket. The white smoke may actually be steam from the coolant leaking into the combustion chambers. If your car is using a lot of water, this would back up the blown head gasket theory.

Can you drive your car when it is blowing blue smoke?

No I don't think you should. It doesn't sound safe to me if I were you.

Car burns oil and white smoke comes out of the exhaust?

Yes, this is simply showing your car is working, however, what SHOULD'NT come out of your exhaust pipe is red flames. If that is what's coming out, I'd check with mechanic.

In general,

Blue smoke, engine oil.

Black smoke, excess fuel.

White smoke, engine coolant.

How do you remove muffler on a 2002 Miata?

The muffler is held be a few rubber exhaust hangers and 2 bolts connecting the muffler to the catalytic converter pipe.

  1. Raise the rear of the car on ramps or jack stands.
  2. Loosen the two bolts connecting the exhaust to the exhaust pipe. Often the nuts/bolts are rusted and sprays such as Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster should be used.
  3. Once the nut/bolt is removed, the exhaust is free to be removed from the rubber exhaust hangers. Some viscous liquids like dish soap or oil, forced in with a small stick or flathead screwdriver can be used to pull the exhaust from it's hangers.
  4. When the exhaust is replaced use a new exhaust gasket between the exhaust and catalytic converter exhaust pipe.

These basic instructions can apply to any year Miata.

How much do it cost to get a muffler fixed?

Depends on the make and model of your vehicle. Just be careful, Nissans and others use threaded bolts so it's a bit time consuming if you're doing this yourself. If you are and your car is more than 7 years old I would recommend just replacing the whole exhaust system (usually in the ballpark of $600 and up) because it will save you money and time in the long run. Just a muffler though depends. I spent $150 for mine and it's not performance or anything just a plain muffler.

Why is my Nissan Almera GX 1996 consuming too much fuel over short distances There is a strong smell of petrol outside being expelled from exhaust. engine also sputters sometimes?

Could be number of reasons, I am not familiar with car but sounds like fuel mixture problems which could either be carburettor, injectors, or lambda sensor depending which. Any option not expensive to fix and could just need adjustment

Exhaust pipe Chevy g-20 350 5.7l k has water coming out of it?

Clear or blackish water coming from exhaust is very common and is nothing more than condensation from the metal heating up. If you have white smoke with a sweet smell then you may have an issue, but I think your fine and just seeing condensation.

A part of a motor vehicle's exhaust system, serving to muffle the sound of the vehicle.
