How do you fix a odometer on a 1994 Oldsmobile 98 regency that Speedometer works trip odometer stopped working last year and now the odometer no longer works?

These are usually sealed units and for the most part are not repairable. You might get another one from a junk yard ... or try searching the internet.

The other possibility is that the physical cable that drives a mechanical speedo could be broken. Some of these are driven off the transmission, others are driven off one of the front wheels.

How do you tell if your cars odometer is in miles or kilometres?

Find a location with a known, sign pointed distance to, like the next rest area, the next junction, or the next town.

Ideally, it should be at least 3-5 miles, but preferably longer (or kilometers) to make the result easier to determine.

Then just check your odo when you pass the sign, memorize the number, drive to the posted spot and check your odo again. If your odo has counted up the same number of miles (or maybe one off) as what's on the signs, then your odo is using the same units as on the signs.

Or borrow a GPS to compare with, they usually have an ODO function in them as well.

Or check what distance you get with your car, then ask a friend what distance (s)he got with another car.

Why is it illegal to alter the odometer on a vehicle?

Odometer reading is a vital tool in car assessment, it represents safety, real age of the vehicle, and many other general factors. The act of altering the number constitutes forgery and fraud, due to it's apparent nature. For example, if it would be legal to alter the odometer reading, then many people could buy brand new cars at their local dealerships, with reality being that those are used cars with thousands of miles on them, and used car owners will be more prone to be in car collisions, without having a clue of the real state of their car.

96 Geo Tracker: How do you fix a speedometer and odometer that stopped working?

It could be a broken or disconnected speedo cable, that's one thing, the other is that the speedo itself has died that's what happened to me. The thing to do is first check the cable. You need to disconnect it from both ends and see that the inside works, the hard part is removing the instrument panel assy. This whole deal takes a bit of time and sure helps if you've got help but it's doable. If the cable's ok then you need to buy a new instrument assy.

Who do you replace odometer cable for 1986 for ranger?

Here is how the Chilton Manual says to do it......
1.Raise and safely support the vehicle.
2.Disengage the cable from the transmission.
->Disconnect the cable by pulling it out of the speed sensor. Do not attempt to remove the spring retainer clip with the sensor. 3.Disconnect the cable from its retaining clips
4.Push the cable through the grommet in the floor and pull it into the passenger compartment.
5.Disconnect the cable from the speedometer, cluster removal may be necessary.
6.Install the speedometer in position and route it through the floor.
7.Connect it at the speedometer and at the transmission.

Is there a fuse that controls digital dash on '84 300ZX - ECM box is good since digital dash went out suddenly and completely along with the accel gauge and compass - odometer now runs backwards too?

I found the answer myself and thought I'd post it. The Rear Wiper Motor fuse also serves the front dash for some reason. The clue to this is that the accel (G) gauge and compass also went out at the same time. The rear wiper wasn't working, but that was unknown since it had not been needed since the dash went out. I checked that fuse in the fuse box and, sure enough, it was blown. I replaced it and the dash came back on.

They record in kilometers, yet distances on British road signs are prominently displayed in miles and car's speedometers read in miles per hour with km/h in small display just like the U.S.! As ironic as that sounds, it's a fact.

On a 2002 Chevy Prizm how do you change a light in the dashboard behind the odometer?

Instrument Panel Lamp Procedure per Prizm Shop Manual This procedure only applies to cars with tilt steering wheels. "Prizms without tilt wheels are infinitely more difficult because you have to disable the airbag system and remove the trim covers from the steering wheel. " not too sure about that...Important: The ignition switch must be in the OFF position when removing the instrument cluster assembly. 1. Tilt the steering column down in order to gain the necessary clearance to remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate. 2. Remove the two screws that secure the instrument panel cluster trim plate. 3. Disengage the two lower clips (hidden) 4. Gently remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate from the instrument panel assembly. and move it into the larger open portion of the steering wheel. Turn sterring wheel to the left and drop it out the bottom. 5. Remove the three screws which secure the instrument panel assembly, pull out the assembly carefully. 6. Mark the the 4 electrical connectors where they connect to the cluster assembly so that you remember which connector went to which socket. Unnecessary7. Disconnect the 4 electrical connectors from the cluster assembly Unnecessary 8. Remove the instrument cluster assembly Unnecessary, shift it out to one side 9. Remove the instrument cluster retainer with the instrument cluster lens attached from the instrument cluster case by releasing the 8 locking tabs. Unnecessary 10. Remove the cluster bulb socket from the instrument cluster case by turning in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the old bulb from the socket. Remove the green rubber boot from the old bulb place on new bulb, insert in socket and replace the bulb. 11. Reverse the procedure to reassemble NOTE: This is such a convoluted procedure you should replace all bulbs while you are this deep into it. Trust me, the other bulbs will soon go bad. Incredibly, the shop manual does not list the part number of the bulb. Note 2: It is easier, and you are less likely to break the trim plate, if this is done while the dash is warm and therfore more flexible. Like parked in the sun for a while before starting. Also, the bulb is a #194, and you will want to get green colored "instrument bulb boots".
