Patents are like the intellectual property rights. If a person patents something, then that means they were the first ones to record that idea and so why shouldn't they have sole ownership of that patent from bigger companies from coming in and copying it without having done all the reaserch and hard work?

Monopoly regulates competition so that the consumer gets fair market prices for goods and services so that companies cant charge you what they want.

One rightly controls an Idea, the other controls Price in the consumers interest.

Every invention has multiple patents often by many different people. Each patent covers different parts of the invention, improvements to the invention, or even effectively useless changes to the invention that allow an inventor to extend their patent coverage.

Patent 2,573,254 has a date of Oct 30 1951, and refers to a combination bridge and pickup assembly for string instruments. The patent was filed Jan 13 1950. I have a picture of this patent in a book, the instrument pictured has 6 strings.

Polished concrete flooring is usually referred to as Indian Patent Stone (or IPS). It is generally done with cast-in-situ PCC(1:2:4) with coarse aggregate as 6-10mm granite chips.

Interesting shotgun. The patent date is the giveaway. The shotgun was actually made by the Crescent Firearms Company which was the largest shotgun manufacturer in the US at the time. It was absorbed by HD Folsom, a huge firearm importer/distributor, and continued making shotguns for that firm under many different brand names until Folsom was absorbed by Stevens c.1930. I do not know what hardware store or mail-order store used the GET THERE brand name. Vorisek's "Shotgun Markings" attributes that patent date to WH Davenport. His entry for GET THERE indicates "unknown manufacturer" so I guess this date was not marked on the example he examined. Unfortunately, Joe passed away on Christmas Day, 2005, and I do not know what will happen to his documentation.

It depends upon what country you're talking about and how "early" you mean. By 1899 there were over 600,000 US patents. In 1850 there were less than 8,000.

Software (e.g. apps) are generally not patentable. They are covered under copyright law instead like other "works of art" (e.g. books, music, pictures, plays, movies).

Occasionally one or two unique algorithms in a piece of software that were supposedly never developed before can be patented as a "mechanization" or "process" but this is very rare and only covers that tiny algorithm, not the complete program.

Patent application 2003/0095096 is for improved approaches for users of computing devices to interact with graphical user interfaces. According to one aspect, a rotational user action supplied by a user at a user input device is transformed into linear action with respect to a graphical user interface. According to another aspect, a portion of an extended list of items is displayed by a graphical user interface and, through rotational user actions at a user input device, the portion of the list being displayed can be varied with welcomed ease of use. Although the type of computing device can vary, the improved approaches are particularly well-suited for use with a portable media player.

Claim 1 recites a portable media player, comprising: a storage disk drive that stores media content for each of a plurality of media items; a display screen that displays a portion of the media items at a time; a user input device that enables a user of said portable media player to at least select a particular media item from the plurality of media items through a rotational action with respect to said user input device; and a processor operatively connected to said storage disk drive and said user input device, said processor controls said portable media player to play the media content of the particular media item that was selected using said user input device.
