How do you replace a starter on a 1994 Grand Prix with a 31 engine?

Answer

You will need a jack, various sockets, a ratchet and various wrenches. Job takes about an hour or less.

- Disconnect the battery!

- Jack the car up but the front end enough to slide underneath.

- Disconnect the wires on the solenoid and starter.

- Remove the starters splash guard. Should be 3 bolts , 10mm

- Remove two bolts under splash guard.

- Remove mounting bolts on side of starter/transmission housing.

- Go back to the top of the engine. You will need to remove the coil pack.

- Unplug the wires from the coil pack.

- There will be 3 bolts (13mm )holding the coil pack to the engine. One on each side and 1 that is sort of hidden on the bottom (you may need to get under the car to get a hold of the bottom one)

- lift coil pack out of the way and pull the starter up out from the top.

- Installing is basically in reverse order. Just make sure you remember where all those wires hook up! Label them with tape if you have to!

Should be the same for various years with the old style 3.1 engine.

Will 6X Pontiac heads that came out on 400 and 455 engines fit a 350 Pontiac engine?

Yes, all tradional Pontiac V8 (287,317,326,347,350,370,389,400,421,428,455) heads will physically bolt to all blocks. The later 265/301 will bolt to older blocks also but the water passages between the head and block are different and there is no available intake manifold. 6X heads came on Pontiac 350-400 from 1975-1979. no 455s were factory equiped with 6X heads. There are two versions of the 6X, one stamped "4" and one stamped "8" the heads stamped 4 have smaller combustion chambers around 94 cc, the one stamped 8 are about 100-101cc. The 6X-8 head would give very low compression (about 7-1) the 6X-4 would be better but is still only about 7.6-1. High valve lifts can cause valve to cylinder wall interference on 350s since the bore is only 3.88".

What does grand prix mean?

Loosely translated from French (or Italian) it means "Big Race". As to the cars that carry the name, it just sounds fast; don't it?! They had to name it something.

I have a cold air intake 3.4 pulley 3'' downpipe high flow cat and U-bend delete on my 2002 grand prix GTP why would the service engine light be on?

It may be an oxygen sensor issue. I had a 2002 Mustang GT with similar set up and had the same problem. The manufacturer of your high flow exhaust system should make a new sensor that takes the place of the stock one that sends a false signal to the emissions control and gets rid of the "check engine" light. There can be several reasons for the light to come on. It can be because the O2 sensor has been eliminated with the U-bend delete or it can sometimes be related to the CAI modification. Get your engine scanned to know for sure. For related info on your modified engine see the postings on www.clubgp.com Hope this helps. "G"

How do you fix a front driver side power window button on a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix when the power window regulator is still working. The cable came out of the regulator?

I just helped a friend with his window that would go down but not up. We pulled the door apart and found that the motor was getting power from only one of the two wires that tie into it allowing it to go down. It appears that the motor itself is grounded to the door (or has a negative feed I could not see) and the two wires provide power for either up or down. I diconnected the two wire plug from the window motor, retracted the wires from the plug and switched them. His window now goes up only, which is a better option for our -20 to -30 C days here. After looking at the switch assembly I would say it's a disposable part that should be replaced. I tried taking it apart but found that the window buttons like to break rather than pop off nicely. You could do it but I'm not sure what condition the unit would be in once finished. BK
