Sunroofs and Moonroofs

i believe they are on the right side of the center console . there is a panel that comes off

Like every do-it-yourself repair, safety comes first. You will need to be under the car. Use only well-rated and stable frame stands to support the car. Have some backup supports if for some reason the car shifts. Think three times. Act once. Elevate the car so that you have adequate room to work. You will need about 12 inches of clearance above your chest minimum. Remove the wheels and set them aside. Remove the tie rod ends from the lower A-arm assembly. Above the transverse frame member you will find the point that the steering shaft enters the rack. The steering shaft has a groove machined around it, andis retained by a bolt that is threaded into the universal joint at the steering gear. Using a 13mm. hex socket, remove the bolt. USe as suitable means to spread the split where the bolt was removed, to allow the shaft to drop out of the universal joint. This might take some persuasion if the car has seen a lot of snow and salt. Move next forward under the car. Remove the two large bolts from the front of the rack housing. The two on the ends. Not the one in the middle, its just a dust cover. This WILL take some persuasion or an impact wrench. It will also take backup wrenches on the nut-end of the bolt. In extreme cases, you might have to cut the bolts off. If so, cut them next to the frame member. Once removed, the steering gear housing is free of the frame. Remove the hose connections from the top end of the housing. The connections on the underside are "captive" and go with the steering gear. There's no need to remove them. The unit will bleed fluid. It's best to have some cardboard or absorbent cloth under the car while you're working, and after you dismount the unit. If the car is in good condition and is getting regular service, and is a warm weather car, removal should take about an hour plus setup. If not, count on at least half a day for cutting bolts, letting penetrating oil work on rust buildup etc. Have fun! This one's nasty.

Well, yes, it CAN be done, if you're willing to pay for a large amount of bodywork and customizing of your car. It would involve chopping out the entire roof of your car and chopping the "moonroof/sunroof" section from another car just like yours, then doing the bodywork and painting to return the car to its original condition, inside and out. If you're talking about these "aftermarket" sunroof accessories, that depends on your expertise and skill as a bodywork mechanic. Why not just sell your car and buy a car with the sunroof already in it? That would save a lot of money and time on your part, and it would all be original equipment.

To correctly answer the question about the sunroof/moonroof install... It is very easy to install an aftermarket sunroof provided you have the right tools such as a die-grinder(not the best, gets hot an burns paint), a jig-saw(best if you have a friend to hold the roof from shaking violently :) ) or sheet metal shear (depends on the quality, but easiest) for cutting the roof of your car, normally a template is included to cut out and step-by-step instructions (ya, its a little scary cutting a hole in your roof the first time) I have installed 3 sunroofs without any problems and it only takes about 30-40 minutes start to finish, not including the repair of the headliner. That's the most tedious part, but just requires patience, new headliner material (around $10 a yard if i remember right) and some GOOD! (3M) spray adhesive ($10-15 bux a can). Now about the moonroof, I couldn't really tell ya how difficult it is cuz that's what I am looking into right now, but chances are, if any dummy at a glass shop can install it in a car, why can't you?

Actually its not as hard as the two above say it is. Now doing it yourself is a BAD idea. search the word "moonroof" through any search engine and you'll eventually find out all the thngs that can go wrong. For a few hundred bucks you can have a tilt/slide sunroof added, which is sometimes LESS than what the dealer will charge, when most of this type of sunroof is added AFTER the car has been built anyway. A moonroof, or built-in sliding sunroof would be 900-1400 bucks and would require a loss of headroom, so if you're looking for an aftermarket sunroof, you can easily get a tilt/slide one done for about the same as you would pay if it came with the car.

I put a sunroof into an MGB GT which I got from a scrap yard from a Renault 16 and it went well. Take paper and pen, tape measure and tools to a scrap yard that lets you roam.Find a suitable sun/moon roof (preferably in same type of vehicle) carefully remove the old sun/moon roof make lots of notes, take lots of meaurements and use them to install in your car in reverse order. The hard part is making the first hole/cut in your roof. I marked the opening on masking tape applied to roof. Drilled pilot holes in corners to see where to cut headliner. Headliner cut in big X corner to corner and trimed up during install. Used a jig saw to cut out roof. Like I said it worked for me.

I have a 1993 300e and located a 30A flst fuse close to the battery, perhaps this helps

Remove the sunroof headliner. Pull the flex cable forward until out of the motor. Remove the left(driver’s side) plastic fender panel in the trunk. Disconnect the wires. Take out the mounting screws. Gently separate the flex cable’s tube from the motor/gear assembly.

A common problem with the 2000 Toyota Camry is sunroof drain clogs and leaks. These can be repaired through the dealership.

Sunroofs are very hard to get sealed and I leave it to an auto trim shop to do. They do it every day and know the tricks. Good luck.

I belive the fuse panel is the end of the dash board--open front door and panel is accessible. I think there are 2 one on each end of dash

The factory sunroof does not have a manual close devise.

I'm not sure this is the best way to work on this, but we have a 2001 Dodge Neon and the sunroof would not function but you could hear the motor. My wife said she put her right hand on the glass and as she operated the control button with her left hand she applied light pressure on the glass and all of the sudden it worked.

Once she did that, all was fine. I then lubed the rails hoping it was just something that jammed the mechanism.

I would try that first before taking it anywhere and spending $100 to have joe the oil change boy do the same thing.

Hey,having the similar problem and looked it up on a forum.If its not moving but still making the motor noise,theres a good chance your cable on either side is caught or detached.You need to disassemble the sunroof and reattach it.I believe it only requires a screwdriver and an hour or so

Find a Star Tip Bit screwdriver and remove the 6 screws from under the sunroof, carefully removing the glass.

Then just replace the tracks back to it's place. Finally, carefully replace the glass and screws.

the fuse is located under the hood, next to the battery. you will need to turn the knob to get the cover off. the fuse will be labled fuse 1, its a large Green 30amp fuse. this fuse controls the following : Power windows

Power sunroof

Rear wiper (wagon)

Yes, there are 4 drains at each corner of the sunroof which sometimes get clogged.

Fuses are located in two places. In the car on the drivers side, to the left near the hood opener & in the engine compartment to the right. Check your owners manual for which fuse box contains the fuse for the sunroof.

The problem may be the sunroof switch. Replacing the sunroof switch is as easy as changing a flashlite battery.

I had this happen to me once, along with all my other courtesy features, locks, remote entry. for me it was a fuse, so i would start there. good luck!

Pull down the flap between the roof lights, there should be a Alan key to turn in the motor

I plan to caulk mine shut. THe repair estimate was $9k.

You didn't mention what is wrong with it, like it won't tilt, move, close. If it is stuck open etc. there is a small panel in the back seat area, look up and there is a panel that you can remove and a wrench is there that you can manually move the moonroof.

Yes, you can by pull down the headliner in the front, then pop off the plastic piece on the sunroof motor and use a torx bit to manually close it, but it goes really slow.

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander the sunroof closed but will not come down all the way. How can I get it to close completely?
