Sunroofs and Moonroofs

First i'd recommend pushing the sunroof button!... sometimes they do stick! If you're sunroof button/ or any power window for that matter is or had been intermittant at best... check all connections ... and then pay someone else to change out your power window/sunroof motor because it's not worth risking your heart/stress level doing it yourself!!!!

Yes it does. It gives you a view of the sky. Nothing beats star gazing through the sunroof at night and just feel the gentle breeze on your face.

You should be able to remove the plastic covering for the interior lights just under the sunroof,there you will be able to manually close it,there should be a crank handle in the boot with your spare,if not you will have to get 1 from diy shop.

I don't know exactly what is meant by the word "advisable" so I will try to answer what I think about sunroofs (a window, on the roof of the car, that can be opened and closed). I would say that they are NOT worth the trouble but, this may be hard to convince a person that never had one, mainly because they seem "sooo cooool". The main thing that I have against them is that I hardly ever use mine. Maybe twice a year. And I'm not sure it was all that sexy an experience. I find that it seems to suck the air out of the car and makes it hard to breath. And most of the time it is too hot and you end up closing the window after about ten minutes anyway. Then you add the posibility that it will leak and ruin the inside of your vehicle. And worse is having it break and costing from a 2-4 hundred dollar repair bill. My sunroof has just broke and I am cursing the day I got it. Bottom line, I would advise against, going out of your way, to get one.

Take the negative battery cable off for about 3 min.

Depends on which type of vehicle you purchase. Webasto sunroofs will be marked up according to the auto-manufacturer. The HIGHEST suggested retail mark up I have seen for the OSR panoramic sunroof was $3000. Webasto does not set the price or margin of mark up. Suggested retail price is set to the auto- manufacturer. Go to your dealer and check the window sticker for the exact price you will pay.

There is not really a way to fix the sunroof but you can buy an used one for less than $200 dollars that's what i did for my 95 vw jetta GL. if you want more info send me an e-mail jerryjetta96@sbcglobal.net i know where to get them .

Well, just like on any car, you get the manual for the car. If you get a good manual, i recommend" CHILTONS "brand, then it will tell you how to take out the motor and replace it.

you can also look at the roof of the car from inside and if you see a bulge then there it is...

also you take the car in to the manufacturer this is your local LIncoln dealer, and they will show you...

Personally, I would reccommend staying away from the Haynes/Chiltons manuals for anything more than oil changes and such as that as they cover too many models and years to really get specific about your year. I would suggest getting a manual from www.helminc.com or going on eBay and searching for used paper ones or getting a manual on CD for your year and model of car. It gets down to every last nut and bolt along with part #'s for replacements. As to how to get to the motor, it should be inside a hump in the ceiling right above the middle seating position in the rear seat.

It is up in the front corners of the moonroof it might be a hidden by the moonroof track. If you take a look you should see a pen size hole and it drains into your wheel wel.

You'll need to replace the stuck injector.

I am assuming that you are asking this question because the sunroof has malfunctioned due to, 1) blown fuse or bad motor, 2) bad/broken track mechanism, or 3) worn out drive rods.

The only thing the average, non-mechanic can do is to replace the fuse if the motor isn't working. But don't be surprised if it blows the fuse again. To replace a bad motor you'll have to pull down part of the headliner (not an easy task).

If you have a bad/broken track the window will be crooked (one side higher than the other). If you feel adventurous, get a #20 or 25 Torx screw driver and remove the 3 screws on each side of the window (inside the car). the window will pop out. Then you can push the broken side down as you use the motor to bring the good side of the window. Your sunroof is broken, but at least it is closed. Put the window back in and replace the screws.

Worn track rods are similar to a broken track (I think they go together.

Replacing a sunroof is expensive. Doing it yourself is a $500 plus investment. A shop will cost almost twice that much.

From another answerer - also if the tracks are fine and it's the motor or the switch or fuse, there's a manual override. In the '91 to '95 or 96 Saturn S-series, use a flat head screwdriver in the center of the motor bushing. Rotate and as you do the sunroof closes and lowers. In later models it may need an Allen wrench.

The fuse is easy to fix. See the owner's manual. It's a number 15amp in the number 17 slot in the box on the middle console of the passager side.

Right now I'm trying to figure out if it's the motor or the switch. Since the motor is fine to open and I hear no sound to close, dealer thinks (over the phone) it's the switch.

To get to the switch remove the light cover by prying gently with a flat head around the edges. Then unscrew the light unit. The switch has a harness plug to unplug, then pull the switch out the front (other) side.

The motor is right next to the switch under the headliner hump. It's an old car so I cut on both sides of the material and I'll put a next vinyl strip over the 3" cuts when I'm done, in similar color.

i have a 1998 ford contour and as far as i know there is no fuse for the moon roof. check the wiring and see if you have power going to it. it could not have power going to it or maybe the ground wire isn't connected right. it is also possible that the motor for it is just broke and needs to be replaced. but i would stat by check for power going to it. its cheaper!

Your sunroof has a stipped plastic gear in the sunroof motor assembly. Access your motor by prying out your overhead light assembly. Remove the exposed screws and slide the plastic cover aft (it may be difficult to remove because the housing is "clipped" in place). A plastic cover protects the motor and gears. Simply remove the cover to access the gears. Your motor more than likely has a worm gear and your mating gear (which is plastic) has sheared it's teeth in one section or been sheared all the way around. Remove the motor and all but the crank assembly's gear. You can now manually turn the gear by hand while applying pressure on the sunroof in a forward direction. The motion will be difficult and slow, but you'll finally be able to turn the crank assembly till it reaches a "locking" detent. You'll be able to feel this as it snaps into place. Your sunroof is now locked into place. You can either purchase a new gear (around 55 dollars US) or replace the motor. Installation is as simple as reversing the steps above. The most difficult part is convincing yourself to try to fix it. I have found that these gears strip for two reasons. Number one is aging gears and number two the track usually never sees any lubricant. Your sunroof has moving "chains" (for lack of better term) in a track. After replacing the gear be sure to lube this track. (You can only gain access about two-thirds the way around but actuating the sunroof several times will move the lubricant around for you.) This was a common problem on several year models.

Suggestion is to look in your local area junk yards. Most will have this make/model (1996 Nissan Maxima) and you will find an in place panel fo the fuse diagram.

THE SUNROOF OR MOON WILL CLICK WHEN THERE IS SOMETHING JAMMED IN THE TRACKS. YOU HAVE TO LET IT KEEP DOING IT UNTIL IT UNJAMS. I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM BUT IT WONT UNJAM IT.

You need to remove the sunroof glass first.

There are 6 torx screw that hold it in place. To access them open the roof so the back end is up to expose the "belows". Pull this rubber cover toward you, it will pop off easily exposing the 6 screws. Once the window is removed you can access to cover. If I remember right you may need to remove the upper guide track to get the cover out. You just pull if forward out of the window openning.

i had the same issue with the "sky roof" on my 320 and the parts alone are $1200. Labor requires many more $ due to the fact the entire inside roof (fabric and other material must be removed. needless to say, I don't use mine no more !!

It must be. Check the fuse box. Each fuse box has a key page next to it explaining each fuse function.
