Battery been disconnected lately? Service work done? Sounds like the memory needs reset. Hold the open button down until it opens fully, then hold the close button down till it is fully closed. The light should now turn solid red or green depending on what mode it is in. Green is to autoshut when vehicle is shut down. Red is to override autoshut and stay open with vehicle off.

To my knowledge there isn't one, but at the salvage yard we have people come in with the problem that the electric switch that operates the sunroof, doesn't work anymore, it's usually a bad motor, and not the switch itself. In dire straights, we take out the guts of the sunroof motor, so that persistant customers can manually slide the sunroof back and forth, as to whether it still locks tho, so far not yet. But check your switches and fuses before you try the no guts in the motor trick.

I have a 1988 420sel. I'm not sure if they are the same but I have a slide switch just to the right of the overhead light between the sun visors.

It really depends on many factors. Say for example you want to replace an exterior wooden stair such as one on a deck. Lets assume it is 8 or 9 feet high. Assuming that you are not going to deal with pouring a concrete pad for the foundation of it, you are probably looking at about $2000 or maybe $3000. Now lets assume that you want to replace a staircase inside a home. Again many factors shape the total cost. If is is a simple stair such as one that is going to be covered with carpet and instead of balusters or spindles a "pony wall" with a cap will be used instead o a handrail you can expect a similar cost as that of the previous example on a deck. How about if you want to go fancy? Maybe a "post to post" or "Over the post" railing configuration, maybe also you want an "Open stringer" to show off beautiful miters at the union of "risers" and "stringer", so as to show off the beauty of hardwood "bull nose" treads. Obviously here you are talking about more expense. Maybe around 6K. Get a reputable "stair builder", ask for references and you should be ok. If you are thinking about doing it yourself, Don't. You will be better off trowing your money away (if you are not skilled enough). At least you wont have to rip it out.

If you hear the sunroof motor trying to work it is usually a piece of the weather stripping that gets stuck in the pathway of the retraction. Or an area of rust and loss of lubrication grease to allow for it to roll back.

on my 1984 190e there is a nut that can be turned with the tools that came with the car.. the nut is located behind a plastic cover in side the trunk on the left side, near the left trunk hinge. but if the cable is broken, this may not work If roof opens then motor & cable are obviously functioning. Suggest checking switch. Also when switch is set to close can u hear sound coming from sunroof area: if yes then switch ok. My problem is opens fine but gets stuck when closing, and will only close by "pulsing " the switch, which would seem to suggest problem with the slide rail(s).

I have found that it usally is due to binding on the wind deflector. The best trick till you can get that resolved is to use a plastic card like a credit card or your video card, and place it in the opening just before it closes. It has to stick up high enough to go over the wind deflector and will actually act as a slide to push the deflector down as the roof goes over it. This can be a temporary or perminate solution depending on how motivated you are and the cars worth to you.

My sunroof does the same thing, but for me it is caused by the motor jamming, all i have to do is hit the motor and it closes, this works until you can rplace the motor.

Remember, the sunroof can always be manually opened and closed by removing the interior cover plate (on the ceiling) using a Torx (six lobe) driver- size T10, and then a standard screwdriver fits into the small, slotted pin located more-or-less in the center of the motor - rotating the pin one way or the other to open or close the roof.

Mine does this, and like in an above answer, it's the wind deflector. Reach out the window and above the front of the sunroof, and push it down a little while closing the sunroof. Remove your fingers as the flap starts to go down by itself.
