A timing belt implies you are working on the 2.2 or 2.5 liter engine. The 2.6 liter engine has a timing chain.

If you are working on the timing belt, I would recommend getting a repair manual for your car. If you are attempting to re-tension an old belt, you should consider installing a new belt, but be prepared to unbolt one of the engine mounts. Having said that, there is a tensioner on the firewall side of the engine, which is hidden under a plastic cover. Depending on how many accessories you have, this cover is probably one of the more difficult items to remove in one piece from your engine. Once exposed, have a friend help you loosen and re-tension the belt (approximately 5/16-inch deflection measured half-way between the camshaft sprocket and the tensioner pulley).

timing is set on a ZX2 by finding top dead center (TDC) on cylinder number 1 and aligning the cams. Once this is done, properly set the tensioner.

TDC can be located by using a crankshaft locking tool.

the cams can be aligned by inserting a flat piece of steel into the slot on the ends of the cams opposite the end with the cam gears.

the cap is numbered right on it. make sure you twist and pull to remove the wires from the cap or you may break it. do not use a cheap cap and always use ac delco plugs in a vortec, the computer is extremely touchy as far as counting misfires in those vehicles.

It should also be stamped on the intake manifold, same as all Ford engines.

by turning the distributor

This is a computer controlled timing engine. Turning the distributor alone can cause engine damage. Loosen distributor. Start engine, unplug timing connector under the glove compartment (brown wire with black tracer, single wire disconnect clip - black) the engine idle will slow. Time motor to 0-2 degrees. Tighten distributor, doublecheck the 0-2 degrees. Plug connector back together. You will see that the computer will reset the timing to 8-10 degrees.

I need a lot more information. I don't know what you mean by four wire plug. What does it look like, what was it used for? What three wire plug are you installing, what does it look like, what is it used for. What color ore the wires?
