Scheduled maintenance on a 2001 Rav4 does not mention replacement of the timing belt. When would you replace this?

there is no timing belt on a 2001 rav....it has a chain. dont replace it unless its damaged, (and you'll know if its damaged!) I DON'T THINK YOUR ANSWER ACTUALLY GOES ENOUGH INTO DETAIL. YES, IT WOULD BE NICE IF THE TIMING CHAIN WARNED YOU BEFORE IT WENT OUT? BUT I THINK I HAD RATHER CHANCE SOME PRVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE AT ABOUT 60,000 MILES RATHER THAN IT BREAKING OR WHATEVER IT DOES AND THERE I AM SITTING ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE WAITING ON A TOW TRUCK? WHAT DO YA THINK? Whoa... hold on there tiger (and please, no yelling "all caps"). The question is a good one, so let me clarify - as I own one of these myself. First off - the owner's manual has a "supplement", a second book that goes over the maintenance schedule in detail - including the timing belt. This booklet recommends replacing the belt every 72/mo or 152000kms for the Rav4... which is odd, since it clearly has a chain instead, starting in 2001. In other words, the book is actually wrong (and any Toyota dealer will confirm this).

Secondly, with any of the new timing chains - you certainly don't have worry about it breaking (like in the old days of timing chains). Alloy metals used these days are much much stronger than in the past - and quieter too, hence why many manufacturers have gone back to that design. It's all about durability baby.

So, you really don't have to worry that you're somehow going to be stranded on the side of the road... really. And if you think that you should take preventative measures, try taking your Rav to a dealer and see how they react. If they are honest, they will look at you like you're crazy ;) ... then tell you it's not required. Hope that helps.

Where can you find a fuse schematic for a 2003 Rav4?

There are 2 fuse boxes in Rav4s (that's how it is in my 2002 Rav4). One is under the hood on the right hand side, the other is located behind the compartment where your left knee touches when you drive. The schematics are printed under the boxes that cover the fuses. Onur Diker.

1999 Honda civic right rear door is unable to open from inside or out. The car is equipped with power door locks.?

If the door won't open from the inside, then maybe it's due to the child safety locks. If it won't open from the outside, then maybe it's locked, or the door handle mechanism has broken, as it has on my 1998 Civic. From the inside, you might be able to remove the screw holding the handle and slide the handle set forward to remove it from the door.

How do you replace the timing belt on a 1999 Toyota RAV 4?

replancing a timing chain, specially in a time where engines come out more complicated every year, is someting I don't recomend doing by yourself unless you got a knowledgeable mechanic by yourside. I have seen this type of work done and the trick comes when the piston fire order must be set. A mechanic uses a special light for this purposes or a specially designed trick that works for him kept as the must precious secret. Maybe the Toyota corporation has taugh their mechanic the way this is done with just settting the belt in place with wichever piston goes on top first.

Where is the PCV valve located in a 2000 Ford Focus ZX3 with dohc?

I have been looking for the same answer for a while. Nobody can help me. A autoparts salesman said it was in between the firewall and the engine but I did not see it. Supposedly a pain to find??? Sorry, I'm waiting myself. The easiest way to find the PCV on a 2000 ZX3 (ZTEC engine)is to stand directly in front of the engine and look at the right side of the oil filler cap. From there, approx 10 inches directly below the the right side of the cap, you will see a black rubber hose/tube (3/4 inches)inserted into a rubber gromlet--the PCV valve!! If you were to follow the hose/tube back through the emission components, you would find it connects to the lower rear of the throttle body. I found this hose/tube to be melted and also replaced it. perot@charter.net I have an 01 Focus ZX3, I replaced the the PCV valve a day or two ago it's located on the front of the engine, to the right and just below the exhaust header! It's in a part of the oil system called the oil pre-heater and it's basically there to releive pressure in the oil system. To remove it find someone with smallish hands because it's in a very tight spot simply pull it out of the pre-heater and disconect it from the breather hose and push the new one back in to it's place and re-attach the hose. There are no tools needed just the valve and a set of small hands. I HIGHLY recomend that you do not run your engine for atleast and hour before you try to get at it. Have fun I know I did!

Where is the oil filter located on a 1986 Nissan 300zx turbo?

I have an 86 turbo. The oil filter sticks out from the side of the engine on the passenger side and is located right above the starter motor. I just changed it from under the car ( jacked up ). I can't remember if you can get to it from above but I think so. I expect they have not changed the location much. I have a 93 300ZX TT. The oil filter is near the rear passenger side of the oil pan. The car is so low that you cannot get to the filter or oil drain on the oil pan without lifting the car.

Where can you buy a very good used car with low mileage?

In 2000 I accomplished this in the following manner:

1. First I decided on what I wanted: a low mileage, high gas mileage, late model Toyota sedan. Toyota because of reliability; I had a limited amount of money and had used up ALL of the money I had saved in the previous year on car repairs. I looked up models on the internet. From this I determined the Blue Book cost so I would know how much I expected to spend.

2. I had once worked in a non-profit with the owner of a Toyota dealership. I called him up and told him that I had used up my last car largely through the non-profit (volunteer work), which was true. He shunted me over to the sales manager in his absence. I told that guy what I wanted. He had a few Corollas on the lot.

3. I went into the dealership and introduced myself to the sales manager. He looked up a Corolla on the computer and found one with 40,000 miles on it. The price was about $1500 less than Blue Book, probably because I knew the owner. I drove it around and bought it with a cashier's check the next day. I had that car for almost twelve years and put 180,000 miles on it before the transmission blew up. Only one major repair expense ($1700) toward the end.

Best deal I ever made. I had figured I'd get the cash back in a year and a half's wages just through saving money on repairs. It worked. The cost of the car was back in my bank account after just 15 months. The rest was all gravy, no repairs. Love Totoyas!

Perhaps I could have "saved" (?) some money buying from a private owner or a fly-by-night lot (one of the those corner lots with little colored plastic flags hanging from a wire on the street side), but going to a named dealer with a long-term presence in the town AND a repair facility is the best way to keep from getting burned. The repair facility is important because if the dealership screws people over on a regular basis, they'll lose out from people not wanting to go there because of the bad reputation. You'll pay more, but you're less likely to get taken to the cleaners.

I used to know hotrodders who would never buy a used car, so to avoid "buying someone else's problems". This is the best method I've found to counteract that.

Where is the oil filter located on a 1989 Buick Century?

It's a 4 cylinder and we have looked quite hard but just cannot seem to find where it is located. Yes, we feel foolish. Any more help will be much appreciated. You failed to list which engine. There is a 4 cylinder and a V6. But no matter, I can assure you both engines have an oil filter. If you will crawl under the car and look hard, you will find the filter.

Its about 24 inches behind the front bumper, right in front of the oil pan. You'll lose about half a cup of oil when you twist it off. To install the new one, rub new oil on the gasket and spin the filter on until the gasket seats, then give it another 3/4 to 1 full turn.

What is a transponder key?

A "Transponder Key" refers to the key you use to start your car. The bulky black part of your key contains a "Transponder Chip". It is a computer chip that contains a code that is known by the computer in your car. If you were to take that chip out of the key your key would not start your car. So, how it works is as follows. When the ignition switch is turned on the computer in the car sends out an electrical impulse. This electrical impulse is picked up by the chip which sends a specific code back to the cars computer. The chip has no battery, it receives enough power from the electrical impulse to power itself long enough to send the code to the cars computer. I know this why? Because I lost the ONLY key to my ford focus and am going to be spending somewhere around 90 dollars to get it fixed. They are an expensive piece of equipment so be careful about dropping your keys and what-not. Matt
