Turbo and Superchargers

my 2003 7.3l is getting 26 on the hiway and about 18 in town. Pulling a 32 foot camper trailer it gets 16mpg

It can be a few things,

turbo seals leaking

faulty crankcase valve

faulty bell pan.

Is te oil leaking from the turbo into the exhaust, or is it that the oil is leaking from the exhayst into the supercharger? I have a 2004 Jetta that is leaking oil from the exhaust port into the supercharger. I think that the culprit is either a bad valve guide, or exhaust valve oil seal. Write me back and let me know what you find.

A "supercharger" is anything the increases the airflow into an engine above atmospheric, there for a turbo and a blower are both types of "superchargers". There are many applications of both turbo's and Blowers on the same engine and any combination of multiple of both, I.e. @ turbo chargers and 2 blowers or a blower and quad turbo's etc etc.

First remove the fuel tank from the car following all applicable safety precautions. Then, remove the locking ring that holds the tank unit in the tank. Lift the unit out of the tank and compare to the new pump you bought. The rest will be obvious.

It's more about the tune-if you have enough fuel, strong enough pistons/rods/crank, etc., with the correct tune, you can have a huge or a small turbo on an engine. If you just put a bigger turbo on a vehicle and do not add fuel and tune, your engine will suffer.

Yes you can, but if you don't increase your exhaust, intake, and make sure that your rings and pistons can handle the heat. If you don't so all that and then some you will just blow your engine.

Typically a good condition 144 blower used is worth about $1500 or more. It depends on if its polished or satin. Long or short nose. And what the pulley ratio is. Also what intake you have for it. Chevy, Ford, Dodge, exe. I have owned a 144 blower, nice little show piece. i sold mine for $1350 solid.

Red diesel, is dyed that color because it is for "off road vehicles only", Doesn't have D.O.T. tax, illegal to use on the road. I do think the sulfur content is higher than pump diesel, won't affect power, but might the high sulfur may cause problems(check engien light).

White smoke is a coolant leak

Black is a rich condition

Blue is burnt oil.

If you just set the can near it, none whatsoever. However, if you put gas in the tank, and run it, it will do things to that motor that would take 3 pages to explain and you still wouldn't understand. If you're trying to destroy someone's truck, this would do it. If it's your truck, don't ask questions, just don't do it.

either have the turbo unit rebuilt, or buy a new one.

Yes it does ... these are made for specific engines - engines who by design are different from one car maker to another, so you need the proper one to guarantee that if will fit and line up with the bolt holes and other connections.

The supercharger uses a belt to drive a compressor that feeds more air to the engine such that more fuel can be ignited; which produces more power. This does have a parasitic drag on the engine, negating some of the gain in power. The turbocharger uses otherwise wasted exhaust gas heat and pressure energy to spin a compressor. This does not have the same parasitic loss as the supercharger and therefore yields a higher efficiency.

You'll have to take the car to a turbo specialist, normally fit a turbo to a normally aspirated engine, you have to replace a few engine components to stronger ones that can handel the extra stress, delivered by the turbo. But if you do it right, o boy you'll never sell that car again.

Why not? Its mostly a question for ones self. If you are a big engine person that wants muscle and doesn't mind the massive fuel consumption then a small engine with a turbo is a bad idea. But if you don't like big engines that waste a lot of gas but hate the lack of power in a little 4 cylinder then by all means, a small engine with a turbo is a great idea.

The 2005 SRT6 crossfire had a supercharger, would need to get injectors, programmer/chipand atleast a pulley to low the boost to a safe level, but would be the best bet. Not too many aftermarket ones avail. due to the low production #'s.

Yes, although some knowledge of turbocharging and exhaust piping must be had. Depending upon the intended application, fuel requirements may necessitate larger injectors and fuel pump, the transmission may need upgrading, and rods and pistons may need to be upgraded if higher boost is desired. Some vehicles adjust very well to operating under boost, however others will simply send pistons through the head. Consult a qualified performance shop for price estimates and a realistic expectation of results, and expect to spend approximately $2-3000.
