By pursuing SDI, Reagan angered the Soviets by abandoning the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty of 1972, in which the U.S. agreed not to pursue any Ballistic Missile Interception system capability. That treaty was seen and regarded by many to be a major hindrance to real peace in the age of Nuclear Missiles. However, in the end, it proved to be the final straw that broke the Soviet Bear's back and forced then Soviet President Gorbachev to make major concessions with Reagan at a summit in Iceland. Financially incapable of competing with the development of such a large scale techonological project, the Soviet military all but became bankrupt several years later, leading to withdrawals in countries they had occupied for years, and the eventual fall of Communism in Russia altogether.

The downside - by forcing the Soviet hand, their withdrawal from east-bloc countries uncorked the lid on centuries old ethnic tensions that had been put aside because of WWII and Soviet occupation afterward. It's always much easier to plan to defend against an enemy you know well, but not so for many enemies you hardly know, which is the state of the world today. a 1996 vw golf thermostat is located in the same place as a 1994 golf. follow the lower radiator hose back to the plastic fitting which appears to be conected to to the bottom or back side of the water pump. at the writting of this answer I have so far been unable to remove two very dificult to access bolts that hold the plastic housing on. but I have been able to feel and then see the thermostat. I will add more if I can refrain from lighting a match and throwing it in the fuel filler spout. so that where you find it and thanks so so so soooooooooo much to tony here is how you remve it...hi mate you have to take the alternator off and you will see the bracket that holds the alternator on i think there is 4 to 5 bolts on it take them off remove the bracket and you will see the water pump remove the pipes and 4 bolts pull the water pump off and you will see a black plastic housing on the bottom with 2 10ml bolts take them off and the thurmostat is there cheers tony

The top answer is incorrect if its a 2.0 this is a very easy job ill you need is a hammer a flat head screw driver on the far left of your trans is a big green cap with the VW on it knock it of with the tools above a little fluid will leak so get a cup next undo your clutch cable and look for a little black vw plastic clip on your release arm pry it of and let the arm fall the now back to the cap area the little black disk is your throwout baring a magnet will help pull it out .

Check your wheel bearings. A common problem on these cars. Jack up 1 side of car at a time and try to move the tire by pushing in on the top of tire while pulling out on the bottom of tire. See if you feel movement from bearing being loose.

Canola oil

It is on the (if you are facing the front of the car) left side of the valve cover. It connects to the valve cover, the crank case (via a hose) and the intake. This needs to be in working condition on this car or there will be a rapid buildup of condensation in the engine resulting in your oil becoming a tan/brown color and possible catastrophic engine damage.
