When the headlights are on.

The turn signal flasher relay is located under the dash on the driver's side. It can be accessed by removing the lower cover beneath the steering wheel. When you look up underneath the dash, the relay will be a small (~1"x1") cylindrical can in a clip to the right of the steering wheel (that is, between steering wheel and driver's door), near the emergency brake lever. There is a two wire plug that attaches to it. When replacing the relay, I would suggest plugging in the two wire plug before snapping the relay back into the metal clip. As a note, the hazard flasher relay is under the dash on the passenger side, and it plugs into the "convenience" center with other circuit breakers and relays.

The master cylinders in Vanagons reside underneath the instrument panel. Sitting in the driver seat, if you reach both hands up behind the instrument binnacle, you will feel depressions on either side for your fingers. Gently pull the rear of the binnacle up and towards you and it will pop off. You will see the cap for the master cylinder reservoir between the speedometer and clock (or tach). There is a plastic apron over the top of the internals of the instrument panel to protect against spilled brake fluid.

This apron and the rest of the instrument panel now need to be pulled before the master cylinder can be removed. After that, its a pretty standard process of removing pressure fittings and unbolting the cylinder from the vacuum booster.


If all this sounds counterintuitive, that's because it is. A Haynes or Chilton manual will show you pictures of the process. Be advised that even with the instrument cluster removed, the job really sucks because of the extremely tight quarters. Good luck!

on my '81, it is on the back of the engine. you must remove the cooling fan to access it. be careful when removing - remove the four nuts, then pry GENTLY on both "ears" at the same time

The flasher is located behind the drivers side plastic panel covering the fan motor (center consul) under the dash. If you remove the panel and look to the bottom right-hand side where the panel was, you should see a black rectangular block about 1" by 1" by 1-1/2" tall. It has 3 prongs on the connection when the wires are removed. Hope that helps.

everyone should have a manual for their vechicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available in the reference section for FREE to make copies of--the PRO manual has more detailed info, and may have wiring diagrams when needed...read up and fix 'em like a PRO...good luck (IN OTHER WORDS, "I don't have a clue" Dave :)

Open the hood, look for the tab right above the headlight housing that says pull up tab to service headlight, under that tab you will see the headlight adjustment screws. Look for a star screw that is right next to the side marker light, remove that screw which is about 4in long and the marker should come out front first.

Look under the dash on the left of the steering column.

The flasher on your Celebrity is located on the fuse block. The fuse block is on the bottom of the dash to the right of the steering column.

at the 15 side of the coil. 15 is ignition on voltage

The turn wingnal switch flasher or relay is located on the inside of the cab on the firewall. You will find it on the driver's side almost at the kick panel located up out of view (you will have to get down on your hands and look up and under the dash.)

There is a relay block here with several relays. You can find the signal relay by turning on the signal light and listening and "feeling" for the relay cycling.

Our shop foreman recommends the Bosch W7DTCs for both the Digijet (1.9L) and the Digifant (2.1L) EFI systems. Originally, VW called for Bosch W7CC0, if I recall correctly. These plugs are obsolete, or nearly so. I have the W7DTCs in my 1984 VW Vanagon Westalia.

The reservoir is behind the drivers seat mounted to the half wall. Keep it within 3/4" from the filler neck.

A concrete base. A steel, angle-iron, bolted-up frame. Corrugated asbestos cement cladding and roof sheets, attached to the steel frame using steel J bolts.

Above the driver's Left foot, on the firewall. It's the big one on top. I just you must push both sides to disengauge the snap lock in, the replacement doesn't have the snap locks. Just did mine, wasn't the problem

I have a 96 Plymouth breeze-- to get to the flasher, you have to take the steering column cover off. major pain in the butt.

It took me a long, long time to find this puppy...

Mine is located way under the dashboard, between the brake pedal and the gas pedal, hidden behind a panel.

To start, look under the dashboard on the driver's side, and there is a panel you can remove by unscrewing a few screws. This panel has a slot in it for the lever that the brake pedal is attached to. You will want to take the panel off, it takes just a couple of minutes and makes a huge difference in getting to the flasher.

When the panel is off, get upside down in the front seat, then look directly to the gas-pedal side of the lever that the brake pedal is attached to (i.e., look towards the passenger's side), and you will hopefully spot a little round can about 1" in diameter (or maybe a cube about that size). If it is just an inch or two from the brake pedal, and it has wires going to it, that oughta be the flasher.

I believe that one mounts piggy-back on the lower part of the column under the dash.
