QDrive is the only company I know which manufactures commercial linear alternators. Visit www.qdrive.com for details. They manufacture linear alternators upto 10 kW. But I guess they are very heavy!

The Umbra Group (www.umbragroup.it) also manufactures linear alternators from 700 Watts to +50 kW. These linear alternators take advantage of the back-drivable nature of ball-screws to amplify the linear input velocity into higher rotary output velocity which is harnessed for electrical power production. Consequently, these units are much smaller and lighter than competing designs.

how do you change the alternator on a chevy 2006 hhr

do you mean the aluminum bracket holding the alternator broke at the bolt holes? do you know that there should be a steel bracket BEHIND the alternator also? when engine usually replaced, sometimes this steel bracket is not replaced and instead a shorter bolt is used to fasten alternator (3 bolts) to aluminum bracket. there should be a longer bolt which goes from the front of the alternator on the left side, thru the alternator and thru that steel bracket and into part of engine?? this part not clearly understood as explained to me by mechanic husband. he had the same problem and corrected when bracket kit purchased from local Chevy dealer; about $197 in Hawaii. hope this bit helps...

The stator is the stationary winding assembly that makes the magnetic field inside the alternator. It is this magnetic field that the armature rotates in generating the electricity.

check the alternator fuse on the main cable that goes from the alternator to the battery. sometimes the alternator shorts out this fuse. it's usually mounted on the right side of the firewall in a plastic cover over .

ALTERNATOR PRECAUTIONS To prevent damage to the on-board computer, alternator and regulator, the following precautionary measures must be taken when working with the electrical system. 1. If the battery is removed for any reason, make sure it is reconnected with the correct polarity. Reversing the battery connections may result in damage to the one-way rectifiers. Always check the battery polarity visually. This is to be done before any connections are made to be sure that all of the connections correspond to the battery ground polarity. 2.When utilizing a booster battery as a starting aid, always connect the positive-to-positive terminals and the negative terminal from the booster battery to a good engine ground on the vehicle being started. 3. Never use a fast charger as a booster to start vehicles. 4. Disconnect the battery cables when charging the battery with a fast charger; the charger has a tendency to force current through the diodes in the opposite direction for which they were designed. This burns out the diodes. 5. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF when connecting or disconnecting any electrical component, especially on trucks equipped with an on-board computer control system. 6. Never attempt to polarize the alternator. 7. Do not use test lights of more than 12 volts when checking diode continuity. 8. Do not short across or ground any of the alternator terminals. 9. The polarity of the battery, alternator and regulator must be matched and considered before making any electrical connections within the system. 10. Never separate the alternator on an open circuit. Make sure all connections within the circuit are clean and tight. 11. Disconnect the battery ground terminal when performing any service on electrical components. 12. Disconnect the battery if arc welding is to be done on the vehicle. Removal: 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. For the 4.3L (VIN W) engine, remove the air inlet duct assembly, then remove the nut retaining the radiator hose brace to the back of the alternator. 3. If equipped, remove the retainers, then remove the brace from the engine and/or the alternator. 4. Disconnect the battery terminal boot wiring from the back of the alternator, then disengage the regulator wiring connector. 5. Carefully relieve the serpentine drive belt tension, then remove the belt from the alternator pulley. Do not allow the tensioner to snap back into position once the belt is off the pulley. 6. Support the alternator and remove the mounting bolts (usually 2) from either side of the alternator, then remove the alternator from the vehicle. To install: 7. Position the alternator in the vehicle and loosely install using the mounting bolts. 8. If equipped, loosely install the brace to the engine and/or alternator. 9. Tighten the retaining bolts: 10. For the 2.5L engine, tighten the nut on the lower mounting bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), the upper mounting bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) and the rear bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). 11. For the 2.8L engine, tighten the lower mounting bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) for engines through 1990 or to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) for 1991 and later engines. Tighten the upper mounting bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), then as applicable, tighten the AIR pump bracket bolt, rear brace bolt and/or stud nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the rear brace-to-bracket nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). 12. For the 4.3L engine, tighten the left or front alternator bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), the right or rear alternator bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm), the brace bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and/or the brace nut (VIN W engine only) to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), as applicable. 13. Connect and secure the alternator wiring. 14. Carefully relieve the serpentine drive belt tension and position the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner into position. 15. If equipped, install the air inlet duct assembly. 16. Connect the negative battery cable.

Because it rotates at a constant (i.e.synchronous speed ) no matter whats the load on alternator.For instance if its a 2 pole machine it will rotate at 3000 rpm to produce a frequency of 50 Hz in India.

If your battery is not up to par could cause this and of course a short in the system too.

Hey David==one goes to the light or gauge on the dash and the other one goes to energize the field. Good luckJoe ==new answer== on a delco alternator, one terminal is a feed back that lets the regulator get a look at battery voltage. it should be hooked up to the battery. the other is a a "flash" terminal that starts the alternator charging, and commonly comes off the idiot lite. see the answer to "wiring a one wire alternator".

how do you connect the wire from the alternater to the starter?

Water does not usually damage an alternator if it is dried out as soon as possible,, antifreeze and oil are very damaging......

Remove auxillary belt. Steering pump removal first. 3 Allen bolts, hydraulic pipes long enough to move out of the way. Remove 2 bolts at drive end, just loosen 2 bolts at rear as they are a compression fit. Disconnect Battery and wires at alternator. Move alternator to the left and it will come out. Hardest job is removing the heat shield.

Typically you know your alternator is out when you have to jump start your car numerous times. A way you can test it is by turning on your car and while it's running discount the + terminal.
