The voltage regulator is inside the alternator.

When my jeep cherokee alternator went bad, the check engine light came on and I didnt have a clue what was going on until my volt guage was reading in the red zone. When I replaced my alternator, the light went off. So in my opinion i wouldnt consider the check engine light as a alternator light.

alternator light is flashing by telling you that the alternator isn't working proper. the alternator is the one that keep charging the battery. it help keep your car moving longer. if you drive without alternator and it wouldn't keep the engine running for 5 min.

This vehicle (like most cars) has both a starter and an alternator. The alternator is driven by a serpentine belt, and the starter is located on the lower part of the engine at the transmission, where the teeth engage with the flywheel/flex plate. An alternator for the 1992 Sentra usually costs around $120-150, and a starter in the range of $90-120.

$130(refurbished)-170 for the part(auto parts store price), and 1/2 hour of your time, using 3 common tools.

A shop will charge you $170-270 (new)for the part and 1.5 hours of labor(@65-80/hr depending where you live)= $280-390 total.

Have you tried replacing the tensener pulling, it has a bearing inside it that should allow the roller to spin. They are not very expensive.

It's also possible that the battery is weak. Have the charging system -and- battery tested to ensure that the voltage isn't dropping below specified levels when the engine is at idle. Most alternators are designed not to engage or to begin generating power until the engine RPM's excede a certain value. This is because the alternator imposes quite a load on an engine, and could cause one to stall if engaged at idle. So the car electrical system, including the ignition, is running off of the battery at idle. Usually, the alternator will engage by 1200 RPM.

This light indicates a problem with your vehicle's charging system, and means that your car is running strictly on the energy available in the battery...and that won't last long. First start the car then pull off the positive on the battery if the car dies than you need a new alternator if the car keeps running u may need a new battery.

A word of caution, testing an alternator that way can cause damage to the alternator. The alternator needs power to make power unlike the old generators from the past.

To change the voltage regulator on almost all modern GM cars, replace the alternator. The regulator is inside the alternator, and is not considered a field servicable part.

The light is on because the alternator is not putting out the required voltage. Either the belt is broken, loose, or the alternator is defective.

if your alternator is gone or going your car will start and then eventually just stop running because your battery has gone dead. it typically will not make any sound when your engine is not running because of a dead battery.

don't be so quick blaming the starter you need to check the starter relay, your neutral safety switch,your ignition switch,your conections. your grounds. starter solenoid. if all that is good then look at the starter. they're pretty simple to replace the hardest part sometimes is getting to it ,but once you there is a piece of cake.(don't forget how the wiring goes)

here is a simple test to determing what or where the problem lies. is called the headlight start test. turn on your headlights,try to start the car(have someone do it) look at the headlights if the go dim you may have high resistance somewhere in the circuit.(bad solenoid ,starter motor) if the headlights stay bright then you have an open in the circuit. which simply means bad neutral safety switch,relay,poor ground.(not the starter)

take it to autozone they test for free failing that try this

pre-90's car? unplug the battery while running if the engine dies it's probably a bad alternator (or the alternator is too small for the electrical load of the vehicle)

after 90's? hook a multimeter to the battery while engine is running the voltage should be between 13.5 and 15.5 volts depending on engine rpm

The alternator is below pipework and fittings and will take a long time to remove - according to my mechanic. Going to do it myself even though it will take me even longer!

Its telling you that for some reason the battery is not charging. Possible cause are: poor or dirty cable connections at the battery posts, bad cables, bad battery. It is also possible that the brushes in your alternator are bad but, the fact that you are getting a light usually indicates the problem is with the battery or cables. For some reason on a GM alternator when the internal regulator in the alternator fails you don't get a light. The only indication you get is that when you turn on the key the battery light doesn't come on. So it is probably not the alternator. Check for corrosion around the battery cables where they connect to the battery. That is most likely the problem. If you have the type that screw into the side of the battery, they may have just worked loose. Good luck

Facing your engine from the front of your car, the alternator is on the mid left side below your ECCS/Throttle body/Intake.

There are 2 bolts you will have to loosen.

The first is the bolt on the FRONT side of your alternator tensioner. It takes a 12mm socket or wrench. This will free up the tensioning bolt that is located to the LEFT of the first bolt which you can unscrew to loosen your belt. I believe it also takes a 12mm socket. (I took off my intake tubing to get to it.)

Pull the hot (+) positive lead on the battery while running...If car quits it's bad. Best way is to put voltmeter (Multimeter) on battery while running..if 13 + volts at idle then alternator is good, if 14+ then it's great!

best way to tell if the alternator is charging is to unhook the battery with the engine running, if it shuts off then you know you have a bad alternator, i wouldn't recommend this with newer vehicles due to the fact you could hurt the computer but an 89 i wouldn't worry about that so much, good luck!

The Umbra Group (www.umbragroup.it) also manufactures linear alternators from 700 Watts to +50 kW. These linear alternators take advantage of the back-drivable nature of ball-screws to amplify the linear input velocity into higher rotary output velocity which is harnessed for electrical power production. Consequently, these units are much smaller and lighter than competing designs.

Use the astable to switch a power transistor and connect the buzzer as the transistor load.

Code 41 means an open or shorted condition detected in the generator field control circuit
