Is it okay to put brake fluid in your transmission to stop a leak?
No!
Transmissions use transmission fluid, which has a very different specification of oils and chemical additives to brake fluid. It is also quite different to engine oil.
Brake fluids should ONLY be used for braking systems. As there are at least two different kinds of brake fluid, it is important to use the right kind for your vehicle's brakes!
Engine oils should ONLY be used for engines. As there are many different kinds of engine oil, it is important to use the right kind for your vehicle's engine!
If you have a leak in your transmission (meaning Gear box? Propeller shaft? Differential?) you must first flush out the old fluid - which may be contaminated with dirt from being "open" to dirt flung up from the road - then be sure to get the leak fixed before you re-fill with the right kind of transmission fluid for your vehicle.

did they work when they were bled? could be bad vacuum booster I had this situation with my 1995 gmc jimmy. The was a GM special policy issued (no recall) which has expired. I was lucky and had ext. warranty which cover the job. The a module attached to the abs unit in the engine compartment was changed. I was fortunate that I researched my problem and found this GM special policy on the web. I took a copy of the bulletin to the GMC dealer. At first the service manager gave me a lot of lip service saying it was caused by dirty brake fluid. I forgot some keys in my car which provide a opportunity to speak to the actual mechanic servicing the vehicle, who test drove, ran computer diagonsics and seemed to be clueless of the problem. The problem only occurred while braking at speeds below 25 mph and going over intermittent rough/smooth surfaces and also a pot hole. The brake pedal dropped to the floor and brakes released for a split second. Most of the time the brakes worked fine. I almost rear ended 3 cars. It is amazing no recall has been issued for a dangerous problem which has been documented at the Federal Highway safety department.

What type of brake fluid for 2000 ford ranger?
"DOT 3" brake fluid is recommended by most manufacturers of production vehicles. If you purchase a brake fluid with that classification it must meet the specific standards established by the Department of Transportation, which are quite stringent.
It does absolutely no good to purchase a more expensive brake fluid since the suspension and braking components are so closely regulated.
Any "off the shelf" DOT 3 brake fluid will perform just fine in your Ranger or any other production vehicle.
