Vapor lock in a brake or fuel system is pretty much a thing of the past. If you are experiencing it, then check to see if a brake line is routed too close to the engine, exhaust manifold, or any of the exhaust system. Keep in mind that if you have a low brake fluid level you should check for worn brake linings or fluid leaks. Excessively worn linings or leaking brake fluid can lead to brake failure if not corrected.

Brake fluid has to be 'bled' out through the valves on your calipers one at a time it is important to have either a vacuum pump for this job or an assistant to manually pump the brakes to force out the old fluid. Using new clean fluid to keep the brake resevoir 'topped' up during the process will prevent air bubbles from being allowed into the system.

No different to any other car - and if you don't know this, you shouldn't be trying. Get a garage to do it - but make sure they flush out all the old fluid - you must not mix them. There's often a particular order in which you bleed off fluid at the calipers. Don't assume you do the front first, and then the rear. You sometimes have to do a particular side before another. It is related to the length of brake pipe to each caliper. You should at least buy a Haynes manual. And if it's an old car, don't press the brake pedal to the floor once the hydraulic circuit is 'open' as this will push the piston much further than normal within the master cylinder. And don't forget to tighten the reservoir lid and pump the brakes tight again before driving following any such maintenance.

To check the brake fluid level on a 99 Subaru Forester, you need to open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. This is located on the master cylinder. There will either be a dipstick in the reservoir, or a line embossed on the side that says 'full.' If needed, add DOT 3 brake fluid.

OK: Dextron fluid would be for a GM transmission, transmission fluid for a ford is type f in the older stuff and mercon in the newer as well mercon sp. for your brakes you will need brake fluid of a dot value like dot 4 etc. you will need to consult a service manual to find the type as some are silicon based and some not.

On my 91 Integra LS, it meant that i needed to bleed the brakes, and be sure that you get all or as much air as possible out of them, then make sure that there is enough brake fluid. Try this. ON MY 95 INTEGRA WE HAD BLED THE BRAKES EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS AND FINALLY SOMEONE SUGGESTED WE REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER AND THAT FIXED THE PROBLEM. If you lose pressure after you press the brake and have to pump the pedal to regain pressure, it is your master cylinder. More than likely it is an internal O ring that is failing. It is easy to replace the master cylinder. It has 2 fuel lines and 2 bolts hold it to the DS firewall. Be sure to bleed the new master cylinder prior to re-installing the fuel lines, this will eliminate the need to bleed each brake line individually. I just did it and it only took about 1 hr.

If your brakes are disc brakes, the caliper may be leaking, if you have drum brakes, the wheel cylinder may be leaking. Either item can usually be rebuilt, otherwise replaced. The brake line or fitting (bleeder valve) to it could be loose, damaged or worn and should be tightened or replaced. If the fluid is actually showing on the inside of the tire, those are the most probable causes. If it is showing in a puddle a short distance from the wheel/tire, it still could be those problems and just running down a line or body part before it drips off and onto the ground or it could be a hole in the brake line itself or the next fitting away from the caliper or wheel cylinder could be loose which is where the steel brake line usually connects to a rubber line that then goes to the caliper or wheel cylinder. That connection is almost always right inside the wheel well area and located at a point that attaches close to the body.

The best answer is to ask your local Toyota dealer. The alternative answer would be to screw the cap off your tank in the engine bay that says brake fluid. The fluid on the stick should be a clear light brown. When you touch it the fluid should not be slippery, greasy, or discolored. If there is any sediment in there then change it right away and make sure to clean out the fluid reservoir. Also change your brake fluid every two years and flush out the brake lines for superior maintenance.

In a Chevy Cavalier, you put the brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir located atop the master cylinder. You can find this under the hood, on the drivers side, near the back firewall on top.
