Cadillac DeVille

The Cadillac motor company was founded by Henry Leland and Henry Ford. They named the car after a French explorer who founded Detroit. Henry Ford left Cadillac because he believed that automobiles should be cheap and available to everyone, while Leland believed that automobiles should be luxurious.

There are actually 4 fuse panels on this DeVille.

1. Under the dash board to the left of the steering column, it will swing down if you pinch the tabs together, and has a cover marked fuses.

2. Under the dash to the right of the glove box. Getting to this one is a pain, you have to remove the plastic "Hush panel' from the bottom of the dash

3&4. Under the hood near the windshield there is a black plastic cover ~30 X 8" marked "fuses". the two plastic fasteners are 1/4 turn and the sheet metal one near the hood hinge is a regular nut. once you get this panel off, there are two rectangular covers marked "Fuses" with clips on each end. your Maxi fuses are here.

If you do it yourself, the starter motor will cost you anywhere from $55-110. I got mine for $60 and hasnt given me a problem.

If you take it to the dealer, they will charge you around $380

On top of the steering column, below the steering wheel.

The Northstar engine uses two O2 sensors. Sensor 1 is located on a bung in the exhaust after the manifold, but before the catalytic convertor. Sensor 2 is located after the catalytic convertor. It's that simple.

CCR stands for COMPUTER COMMAND RIDE---essentially this system pertains to the computer controlled struts or what you might consider as shocks

I am guessing here. Inspect the shocks for a broken one. Could also be a suspension part that is defective. You need to inspect the suspension, exhaust system, and brake system. Also look in the trunk to make sure womething is not loose and rooling around.

Running a straight pipe will improve the engines performance, but at a cost. You will have a very loud car with not pollution controls for the exhaust. This may cause CO2 fumes to build in your car without you knowing it and cause you to pass out at the wheel.

the 96 cadillac has a computer and sensors that control the ride of the cadillac you have a senor going out etc.. you can use your dash to tell you what is wrong it gives and stores all codes for each system , you use the warm and cool buttons to navigate thru the system this is what techs use to fix the car it tells them everything and i mean everthing you can overide and disable systems using the buttons on the dash,,

The map sensor is easy to replace. It is right under the air cleaner I believe.

# Remove the air cleaner. # Take out mounting screws. # Disconnect nipple hose and cable. # Reverse directions for new map sensor.

I have 2 99's both with the Northstar. On runs at 190, the other at 196. I assume that's about a normal range.

Unless the car has been wrecked, the usual problem is a stuck or broken hood release cable. If you go under the dash you can usually get hold of the end. Otherwise the cable can be reached under the engine compartment.

Two things can cause white smoke. 1. Burning oil either from bad rings,bad valve seals,bad head gasket 2. Coolant getting into the combustion chamber through cracked head,block or bad head gasket. This can be checked by putting a preasure tester on the coolant system and doing a leakdown test to see if it will hld pressure. Also go to the tail pipe and smell the fumes. Anti freeze usually emits a sweet smell. Are you addding oil or coolant frequently? If so the one you are adding most is usually the culprit

Well, if it is a Deville with the Northstar 4.6L engine, the manual calls for 7.5 quarts with filter.

Loosten the p/s mounting bolts and move the pump. There is sometimes a hole in the pulley to gain access to the bolt behind it or you may need to pull the pulley,

There is one belt on a fiero. You take off the passenger side rear wheel. you should be able to see the slider that the alternator is mounted on. loosen the bolt at the top of the alternator and then loosen the bolt on the slider. This will release the tention on the belt. The trick is going to be getting the tention right when you put the new belt on. You might need another person to help you by using a bar of some kind to pry on the alternator while you tighten the bolts. don't wrench on it too hard though. there should be aboout a 1/4 inch of play if you push in the center of the belt between two pulleys.

Were the spark plugs oil fouled? If so it can be a valve cover gasket, oil would be leaking into your spark plugs.
