Car Electronics and Lights

Gauges, speakers, signal lights, headlamps and cabin lamps are all parts of a car’s electronic equipment. The majority of cars use a 12-volt power source, and include a fuse for protection from power surge.

Does low alternator cause battery damage?

An alternator that is charging insufficiently won't necessarily damage a battery unless it is driven that way for a very long time. More often a failed voltage regulator ( internal in most modern alternators ) or a failed rectifier in the alternator will damage a battery.

To test your alternator you will need a volt meter. Start the vehicle and test the voltage across the battery terminals. Put the positive lead of your meter to the positive terminal on the battery. The rate of charge ( reading on your volt meter ) should be 13 to 14 volts; if it is lower your alternator is insufficiently charging. Have a friend step on the gas and hold the motor at about 2000 rpms. Repeat the test on the battery; if the voltage reads above 14 volts your voltage regulator has failed. Testing rectification from your alternator requires an osciliscope. However, normally if the rectification diodes fail your alternator quits charging and you will have determined this with your first test.

Can a distributor signal rotor go bad and if so how can you tell?

Yes! If you have a suspicion that it is bad, just replace it. Very cheap repair. The distributor cap may also need replacing. Look for cracks and arching.

What is best to use for a sealer on a fitting in a gasoline tank?

Unless a gasoline fuel system fitting is defective, no sealer is necessary or recommended. IF a joint or fitting leaks, the recommended "fix" is to REPLACE the leaking fitting. IN an emergency [only temporarily], and only until the vehicle can be moved to a repair station, one "might" get away with using silicone plumber's tape, or Permatex [brand name] #2 paste sealer. Although I cannot recall competitor's names, there are products equivalent to Permatex. I recall, back in the 1950s, the "olden" days, that we could use well chewed bubble gum for fuel system leaks, BUT in the 60s, the natural gum base in chewing gums and bubble gums was replaced with artificial, man-made gum which no longer worked because they are dissolved by gasoline.

Why would the seat warmer for the driver's seat stop working if the one for the passenger's seat still works in a 2005 Outback?

I had a similar issue occur with my Acura TL. According to the dealership the fillament on the driver seat went bad while the one on the passenger seat was still functional.

Why Chevy hazard lights flash when turn signal is used?

Does your hazard lights only work when you turn the flashers on and the turn signal on at the same time? GM is known for having a multi-purpose switch... this switch controls your lights, turn signals, hazard lights and high beams... sometimes cruise control too... well anywho, sometimes that switch is partially broken... I recommend hooking a multi-meter to the wires that hook the multi-switch up and test all the functions of the switch... but I guarantee if you put a new multi-switch on the car that your hazards lights will function properly... I also recommend buying the part through an after-market company because it is cheaper...

Will a gas light work if the gas gauge doesn't work?

on some vehicles the gas light will still work if the gauge does not. on some vehicles such as an 1985 Toyota cressida have a separate sensor allowing the low fuel light to illuminate.

How do you figure out how big of a power inverter to use?

Determining Size of Power Inverter Needed

Generally power inverters are designated by how much power they are capable of putting out. Usually this is indicated in Watts, which is a universally accepted unit of power measurement.

For example, I have a 120 Volt / 1,000 Watt inverter which I use with my 12 Volt pickup truck battery. That one thousand watt specification indicates that it will operate a 120 Volt electrical device that uses 1,000 Watts [or less]. Commonly, to save line space, the Wattage is expressed in Kilowatt [Kw] units, with 1Kw meaning 1,000 Watts. Thus, you will see various designators such as 1.2 Kw [1,200 Watts], or 3Kw [3,000 Watts], etc.

To determine what size inverter you need, it is necessary to carefully examine the ID labels on the electrical devices that you want, or may want, to power from the inverter.

Usually these labels or decals will specify their voltage and wattage, BUT SOMETIMES they will not specify Wattage, instead giving an Amperage [Amps] rating. You can convert this Amperage draw info into Watts by multiplying the Volts [for example, 125 Volts] times the Amps [for example 10 Amps] to calculate the Watts [thus 1,250 Watts in this example].

Thus knowing the Wattage demand of your appliances or electrical devices, you can decide which ones, and their total wattage demand, and thus the size of the power inverter you need.

Remember that the inverter does not have to be large enough to operate all the devices at the same time, just the sum Wattage of the most heavy power users you would want to use at the same time.

What is low voltage release?

A low voltage release is provided by a 2-wire control circuit. In the event of a power failure, the magnetic motor starter will drop out.

What is ecu on a car?

Electronic Control Unit.

Basically the ECU controlls all aspects of the engine management system on the vehicle.

2 ohm stable amp can you wire up your four 4 ohm svc speakers too 2 ohm?

I think if you have 2 subs, you have to wire them in parallel so they are both loaded to 4 ohms, then the amplifier will see a 2 ohm load. what amp are yu using? im planning on getting a 2ohm stable class d mono amplifier for my 4 ohm DVC Subs.

You need to wire both positives to one positive input and both negatives to one negative input for parallel wiring. That's what ive learned. Since your amplifier is stable at 2 ohms, you shud get a lot of power.

What is inductance?

What sort of induction? There are many uses of this word in different maths, sciences and even medical terminology. Webster's Online Dictionary says that this means: 1 a : the act or process of inducting (as into office) b : an initial experience : INITIATION c : the formality by which a civilian is inducted into military service 2 a (1) : inference of a generalized conclusion from particular instances -- compare DEDUCTION 2a (2) : a conclusion arrived at by induction b : mathematical demonstration of the validity of a law concerning all the positive integers by proving that it holds for the integer 1 and that if it holds for an arbitrarily chosen positive integer k it must hold for the integer k+1 -- called also mathematical induction 3 : a preface, prologue, or introductory scene especially of an early English play 4 a : the act of bringing forward or adducing (as facts or particulars) b : the act of causing or bringing on or about c : the process by which an electrical conductor becomes electrified when near a charged body, by which a magnetizable body becomes magnetized when in a magnetic field or in the magnetic flux set up by a magnetomotive force, or by which an electromotive force is produced in a circuit by varying the magnetic field linked with the circuit d : the inspiration of the fuel-air charge from the carburetor into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine e : the sum of the processes by which the fate of embryonic cells is determined and morphogenetic differentiation brought about Induction has more than one meaning. LOGICAL induction is the process of reasoning from all the parts separately to the whole which they constitute, or into which they may be united collectively; it's a fair description of the scientific method. RITUAL induction is the act of initiating someone into a club or society. MEDICAL/BIOLOGICAL induction is the process of forcing an event or process to begin, such as "inducing labor." ELECTRICAL induction is the creation of an electrical current in a circuit by varying magnetic force. Induction heating is a process that relies on electrical induction to quickly generate consistent, even heat.

How do i reset the password on a Dual xdvd700?

If you haven't changed it, the default is "0000". If you have, you should have written the code down when you did, check the owners manual.

If its stolen, you are out of luck because the password exists to lock out the unit after it loses power for 5 seconds and frustrate thieves after they steal the radio as it makes them worthless at pawn shops.
