Check Engine Light

It means the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool which will retrieve the code. This code will tell you where to start looking for the problem.

Just a FYI for everyone. The following reset my service computer on my 2007 VW Passat 2.0T:

1) Hold down the wrench button (right hand of the trip reset button).

2) While holding the wrench button, turn on the ignition.

3) The computer will now show something like: 'Service Now'.

4) Release the wrench button.

5) Now, press and release the the min (right hand of the h button).

6) Turn off the ignition.

7) Done. The service computer is now officially reset. ENJOY :)

Just wondering if you were able to resolve your code issues. I just blew the same, minus the 740. Based on other responses, it could be just a wiring harness. Any suggestions?

The automatic gear shift mechanism is assembled from over 100 small parts almost all of which are available separately from your VW dealer. Remove the covers and look to see which parts have worn. Order the required replacement parts, then install them correctly. Note that the gear shift lever is removed from the bottom of the car. You may need to lower the exhaust pipe and heat shield to gain access. gear shift linkages need adjusting

There are pages and pages and items that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked for codes with a scan tool. After repair light can be shut off with scan tool.

Most likely the egr ports in the intake manifold are plugged.This requires the removal of the upper intake manifold.Then you can access the egr ports and clean them with a coat hangar and a power drill.The ports clog up as a result of poorthe poor fuel quality we get here in north america.Honda makes a speacial repair kit for these egr problems consisting of a neww egr valve intake gaskets and a metal tube that is inserted into the egr port to eliminate the build up of carbon deposits in the ports.Good luck. Here is some insight and suggestions:

The problem could be the pressure feedback exhaust sensor. They need to be replaced in just about every Ford Ranger eventually.

Disconnect battery for five minutes. Problem should be gone.

Have the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) read with an OBD-ll scan tool by the guys at Auto Zone. It is most likely an emissions issue if there is no driveabilty problem(s) & it's FREE. Have them print you a copy of the code(s). Also, don't throw parts at the problem until you have tested and determined what EXACTLY is wrong. OBD-II is '96 and later vehicles....OBD-I is pre-'96 vehicles.

I have found that it depends on the time of year and where I buy my gas. The check engine light will come on if I buy gas from Shell in the winter. I fill up and at about 3/4 of a tank the light will come on and stay on. Then the next time I fill up at the grocery store gas pump and at 3/4 of a tank the light will go off. It depends on the Brand of gas you Buy and the time of year you buy it. I've had my '96 Ranger since it was new and have noticed this phenomenon regularly. It's something in the gas mixture exhuast that the O2 sensor doesn't like. Just change where you get your gas. Happens to me all the time. No engine damage. '96 Ranger 186,000 + miles, 14 years and still getting 25 mpg on the highway with the 2.3ltr.

Disconnect and reconnect the ground cable from the battery or remove and replace the fuse that controls your computer.

go to an auto shop that has a scantool and have them turn it off for you.you may have to fix the problem before the code can be clear.

Take it to a professional who knows what they are doing.

try disconnecting the battery for about 10 mins. If this does not work have vehicle scanned to determine problem or have codes cleared--most auto part stores will do this

Replace the HT leads to the spark plugs.

Disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes...that will reset the light and the computer memory. If there is still a problem, though, the light will come back on.

You have a problem with the emessions system. You need to correct / fix the problem that made it come on in the first place. Then the light will go out.
