Check Engine Light

Faulty: spark plug, spark plug wire, ignition coil, ignition module, fuel injector are the most common. Coolant leaking into a cylinder is another.

Internal engine problems such as burnt valve, broken valve spring, bent push rod, worn rings.......................................................All of the above and possibly more.

You will need an OBD2 code reader. They can be found at most auto parts stores. It will tell you why it set off the engine light, and usually allow you to clear the fault codes.

There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.

this one is easy.....put the car in the on position(not running) and within 5 sec tap the gass pedel to the floor 3 times. the light should blink when taken(doesnt always on mine though). that should reset it! 93 fleetwood brougham.......d-body

many service lights on the new 3 series you cannot reset yourself, this is a software error by BMW and they are aware of this but currently no fix is available, the only way to reset it is to have a BMW technician reset it with their special service equipment.

If you are referring to the Check Engine Light, then the computer has detected a problem with the emissions system.

The emissions system will detect problems between the two oxygen sensors fitted before and after the catylistic converter, on the exhaust. This is a engine type icon.

The icon that shows a car body, with a spanner on it (this is not the service indicator! that is displayed on the LED screen where the milage is displayed, shortly after turning the ignition on), means that there is a problem with the vehicles electrical system. In most cases with Corsa's, the alternator overcharges.

In both cases i recommend either main dealer, or professional help, as both indications can be rectified using diagnosis equipment suitable for that vehicle.

Pumping the gas pedal only resets the oil change light. Take your car to autozone and have them scan it for the codes. They will then tell you what is making the light come on. Usually bad oxygen sensors will do this but let autozone tell you. If nothing shows up then they can wipe the codes clean and your light will go off. By the way autozone will scan it for free.

To my knowledge it's the same problem, with different wording. Some cars just have a picture of an engine that lights up.

** added by saxtmich ** In some vehicles there are both service engine soon (ses) and service vehicle soon (svs) lights - like my 1999 Buick Regal for instance. Most of the time you will see the SES light turn on if there is a problem directly related to the engine. The SVS light turns on when you have problems related to other systems such as the traction control system or anti-lock braking system.

Disconnect the batter for 30 seconds and this resets the computer.

Turn igniton to on position and put odometer in trip mode, turn off ignition. Hold trip button in and hold it in as you turn ignition to on position, it will flash Turn off ignition. Maintenance light should go and stay off

dissconnect the battery overnight to clear the codes. if that does not work then u have more problems. or you can hook it up to a scanner to cear the codes but they are high. you might take it to autozone and they will cear them for u

Code 214 engine speed (RPM) sensor Intermittant signal

Open the throttle full open and leave it open for about 5 to 10 minutes, don't try to start it let the excess fuel evaporate. After 10 minutes start it up but don't hit the throttle at all let it start on it's own to burn the excess gas.

It is on because u did not put the cap back on tight enough.

That light came on because the on board computer system See's a PROBLEM with the emissions system. You will need to have the engine scaned with an engine scanner to see what the problem is. Then you will have to repair whatever is wrong and then clear the codes with a scanner and the the light will go off. If you don't repair the system and turn the light off then it will just come back on.

The light is one because there is a problem with the emissions system. Once the problem is corrected the service tech will reset the light.

The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to AutoZone or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.

A scan tool is required.

It means the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool which will retrieve the code. This code will tell you where to start looking for the problem.
