EGR Systems

When the temperature in the combustion chamber becomes extremely hot, nitrous oxides are formed, which then turn into smog. In order to reduce such occurrence, the exhaust gas recirculation system minimizes the temperature in the combustion chamber.

A 2001 Dodge Ram does not have EGR.

How does an EGR valve work?

an egr valve opens to put inert gases in the combustion chamber to lower the temperature. this is done to reduce NOx emissions that are produced at high temperatures.

How to change egr valve on 2001 galant?

The EGR valve on a 2002 Galant is located about 4 inches under the intake manifold (black pipes) that are near the back firewall (close to the dash) dead center. It looks like a mushroom with two big hoses and one little hose attached to it. It is connected to the engine by two bolts (14mm I think).

First take out the two bolts and set them aside, careful not to lose the washers on them. There will be a metal gasket that rests in between valve and the engine. Get a replacement at the auto parts store $4 . Then disconnect the hose clamps that hold the hoses onto the EGR valve itself using a pair of pliers. When you are at the parts store get a set of screw down metal hose clamps to save yourself allot of stress and time, for when you put the hoses back on the new valve, $3. The hoses probably have some built up carbon on them and will need a small dose of WD40 to be able to slide off. BEWARE! the EGR valve does have coolant running to it to cool off all those hot gases it controls, so some will leak out after disconnecting hose. This is normal. Then just pull the small hose of the base of the valve. A new EGR valve for the 4 cyl. should cost about $65, $90 or so for 6 cyl. Remember which big hose went to which valve stem. Should be easy. One of the hoses is longer than the other, or just mark one of them. Attach the new valve to the engine, with the new gasket in between them. Don't over tighten the bolts there Hercules, just nice and really snug. Using your handy-dandy new hose clamps ( your welcome ) to reconnect the hose to their correct valve stem. Add back the coolant that you lost during disconnection of the hoses. Then simply disconnect the battery cables for about 5 mins to clear the code that triggers the check engine light. This would be a good time to check the air filter to see if you need to replace it or clean your K&N filter if you have one. Then drive it for about 20-30 miles to allow the engine to cycle through its system checks. If the light doesn't come back on, your good to go.

Where is the location of egr valve on 1999 Ford Expedition v-6?

There is not a V6 offered in a Ford Expedition. There is a V6 in a Ford EXPLORER. If you do have an Expedition, you have a 4.6 or a 5.4 V8. Please refer to other posts in this column for EGR remove/install instructions. Most are very good.

What causes an obd2 codes p0401 and p0300 on a 2001 Honda Passport if you already clean up the egr valve and passage how you can fix it?

== == First off Your Honda is really an Isuzu Rodeo, but you already knew that. These have the GM electronic egr. if you have the 3.2 motor. The only way to fix it is to replace the egr valve.

1995 Blazer Clumps of carbon deposit chunks keep getting stuck in the egr valve the clumps make the valve stick and make the blazer run rough what causes the clumps of carbon and how can you fix it?

Visit an auto parts store and get yourself some SEA FOAM engine de carbonizer; old engines of all sorts get carbon build up it is normal fuel and air combusting cause the carbon.

another wayGo to your local auto parts store and ask for the egr valve gasket and screen made by temco. State year, make, model and engine size and code. The screen built into the gasket will catch the clumps and egr will not be a problem. Don't treat the symptoms, fix the problemThe carbon chunks are a problem that has plagued many 1995 owners. The carbon chunks are caused by unburnt fuel exiting the engine. The carbon chunks enter the EGR valve as it opens to allow exhaust gas into the combustion chambers. The gaskets with the screens will temporarily relieve the symptoms, but will trap the carbon chunks in the EGR ports of the enigine block, eventually causing them to clog and result in more repair work. It's much more effective to fix the cause of the unburnt fuel in the exuast. This rich condition can be caused by many things, such as faulty 02 sensors or the engine needing a tune up, however the most common cause is unmetered fuel leaking into the intake. From 1993 - 1995 these enigne used a central port injector (CPI), which is a single fuel injector mounted inside the intake with lines and poppet valves going to each cylinder. This system has two weaknesses, the internal fuel lines (called the "Nut kit" by GM) and the fuel pressure regulator. These two items commonly leak and cause unmetered fuel to leak down into the cylinders. It can even leak so bad that the fuel will leak past the pistons rings and into the crankcase oil, eventually causing catostrophic engine damage. Luckily these problems are easy to diagnose. You can pull the vortec cover and the IMT valve to try peeking through to see if they're leaking, but it's better to pull the upper plenum so that you can get the full view. The whole inside should be black, if it is leaking there will be clean spots from the fuel washing the inside. Clean spots on the driver side indicate a leaking nut kit. Clean spots on the passenger side indicate a leaking FPR. If one of them are leaking you can replace just the one that's leaking, but a lot of people just replace both so that thay don't have to worry about it.

GM has also issued a TSB regarding the EGR problems. It involves reprograming the computer to cylce the EGR valve at certain times to help prevent carbon buildup.

How much does it cost to replace valve seals?

When asked from a mechanic about replacing the valve seals on a 5.0 V8 mustang engine, i was quoted 300-400. I have yet to take him up on that offer. This is in the 20164 zip code area.

How do you clean a egr valve on a chevy3500 van?

Follow the below steps to clean the EGR valve on Chevy Silverado:

1) Allow the Silverado to cool for a half hour to prevent components under the hood from being too hot. Open the hood by pulling the handle located inside on the lower left side of the instrument panel. Locate the EGR valve; the valve is behind the air conditioner compressor just above the thermostat.

2) Remove the valve using a socket wrench. Loosen the four bolts securing the valve in place. Once the bolts are removed, the EGR can be lifted off the mount.

3) Apply carburetor cleaner to the valve, making sure cleaner is sprayed inside and outside. Apply cleaner to the valve mount as well. For excessive buildup, allow the cleaner to soak the components for five minutes. Remove the deposits and grime using a wire brush and rag.

4) Reinstall the EGR by placing it back onto the valve mount. Replace the four bolts and tighten using the socket wrench and close the hood

What is the black gunk that comes out of your exhaust pipe when you start your car?

The black gunk that comes out of the exhaust pipe when starting the car is probably carbon buildup within the exhaust system. Carbon buildup happens when the engine is not burning fuel as efficiently as it can.

What is an egr valve on 2007 Grand Caravan?

The EGR valve recirculates exhaust into the intake. Exhaust gases have already combusted, so they do not burn again when they are recirculated. These gases displace some of the normal intake charge. This chemically slows and cools the combustion process by several hundred degrees, thus reducing NOx formation.

The EGR system of today must precisely control the flow of recirculated exhaust. Too much flow will retard engine performance and cause a hesitation on acceleration. Too little flow will increase NOx and cause engine ping. A well-designed system will actually increase engine performance and economy. Why? As the combustion chamber temperature is reduced, engine detonation potential is also reduced. This factor enabled the software engineers to write a more aggressive timing advance curve into the spark timing program. If the EGR valve is not flowing, onboard diagnostics (OBD) systems will set a code and the power control module (PCM) will use a backup timing curve that has less advance to prevent engine ping. Less timing advance means less performance and economy.
