How to change egr valve on 2001 galant?
The EGR valve on a 2002 Galant is located about 4 inches under the intake manifold (black pipes) that are near the back firewall (close to the dash) dead center. It looks like a mushroom with two big hoses and one little hose attached to it. It is connected to the engine by two bolts (14mm I think).
First take out the two bolts and set them aside, careful not to lose the washers on them. There will be a metal gasket that rests in between valve and the engine. Get a replacement at the auto parts store $4 . Then disconnect the hose clamps that hold the hoses onto the EGR valve itself using a pair of pliers. When you are at the parts store get a set of screw down metal hose clamps to save yourself allot of stress and time, for when you put the hoses back on the new valve, $3. The hoses probably have some built up carbon on them and will need a small dose of WD40 to be able to slide off. BEWARE! the EGR valve does have coolant running to it to cool off all those hot gases it controls, so some will leak out after disconnecting hose. This is normal. Then just pull the small hose of the base of the valve. A new EGR valve for the 4 cyl. should cost about $65, $90 or so for 6 cyl. Remember which big hose went to which valve stem. Should be easy. One of the hoses is longer than the other, or just mark one of them. Attach the new valve to the engine, with the new gasket in between them. Don't over tighten the bolts there Hercules, just nice and really snug. Using your handy-dandy new hose clamps ( your welcome ) to reconnect the hose to their correct valve stem. Add back the coolant that you lost during disconnection of the hoses. Then simply disconnect the battery cables for about 5 mins to clear the code that triggers the check engine light. This would be a good time to check the air filter to see if you need to replace it or clean your K&N filter if you have one. Then drive it for about 20-30 miles to allow the engine to cycle through its system checks. If the light doesn't come back on, your good to go.

The carbon chunks are caused by unburnt fuel exiting the engine. The carbon chunks enter the EGR valve as it opens to allow exhaust gas into the combustion chambers. The gaskets with the screens will temporarily relieve the symptoms, but will trap the carbon chunks in the EGR ports of the enigine block, eventually causing them to clog and result in more repair work. It's much more effective to fix the cause of the unburnt fuel in the exuast. This rich condition can be caused by many things, such as faulty 02 sensors or the engine needing a tune up, however the most common cause is unmetered fuel leaking into the intake. From 1993 - 1995 these enigne used a central port injector (CPI), which is a single fuel injector mounted inside the intake with lines and poppet valves going to each cylinder. This system has two weaknesses, the internal fuel lines (called the "Nut kit" by GM) and the fuel pressure regulator. These two items commonly leak and cause unmetered fuel to leak down into the cylinders. It can even leak so bad that the fuel will leak past the pistons rings and into the crankcase oil, eventually causing catostrophic engine damage. Luckily these problems are easy to diagnose. You can pull the vortec cover and the IMT valve to try peeking through to see if they're leaking, but it's better to pull the upper plenum so that you can get the full view. The whole inside should be black, if it is leaking there will be clean spots from the fuel washing the inside. Clean spots on the driver side indicate a leaking nut kit. Clean spots on the passenger side indicate a leaking FPR. If one of them are leaking you can replace just the one that's leaking, but a lot of people just replace both so that thay don't have to worry about it.GM has also issued a TSB regarding the EGR problems. It involves reprograming the computer to cylce the EGR valve at certain times to help prevent carbon buildup.

What is an egr valve on 2007 Grand Caravan?
The EGR valve recirculates exhaust into the intake. Exhaust gases have already combusted, so they do not burn again when they are recirculated. These gases displace some of the normal intake charge. This chemically slows and cools the combustion process by several hundred degrees, thus reducing NOx formation.

Less timing advance means less performance and economy.
