The Spanish American War was perhaps the most famous example of yellow journalism, featuring two competing heavyweight newspapers, Joseph Pulitizer's World and W.R. Hearst's Journal, who were both grappling to publish the most grim stories of the war abroad. The Journalism itself was used to sway American opinion to either side favored by the respective editor.

Yellow journalism was the sympathy pusher for the Spanish American war. the two newspapers that published majority of the time The New York Journal and The New York Word, reported the dramatic stories of the Spanish brutality. Whether making up stories or exaggerating on them, their stories did hold some truth about the mistreatment of the Cubans.

Their stories is what stirred most Americans to go to their aid.

It made books and pamphlets against the government at the time more accessible to the common people. This generated huge support against the government. Easier to spread news around the more supporters you have.

Muckrakers. They would rake up all the 'muck' (corruption) and expose it for everyone to see.

McClure's is a magazine in which a muckraker named Lincoln Steffens worked in before becoming a muckraker.

Yellow journalism played a major role in fanning the flames of pro-war sentiment in the United States. Sympathy for Cubans under Spanish rule grew as newspapers competed with each other in reporting stories of Spanish atrocities.

Civil libel involves suing for damages; criminal libel involves punishment (if the accused is convicted) and not damages. In the U.K. prosecution on charges of criminal libel is now extremely rare.

The press played a tremendous part in leading the charge toward America's involvement in Cuba. Two publishers, William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, stood out among these opportunists. They perceived the conflict with Spain as their chance to increase circulation of their newspapers. Seizing upon the opportunity to capitalize on the growing spirit of American patriotism, Hearst and Pulitzer printed sensational anti-Spanish stories. Graphic illustrations commissioned from some of the country's most-talented artists and stories written by premiere authors and journalists of the day were fodder for fueling the flames of war. Together, Hearst and Pulitzer created a frenzy among the American people by reporting the alleged brutality of the Spanish toward the Cuban rebels. (However, acts of outrage committed by the Cubans were seldom mentioned.) By the time the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor, the pro-war press had roused national sentiment to the point that President McKinley feared his political party would suffer if he did not engage in war with Spain.

Mass-circulation magazines were very important in spreading the word of progressivism. The authors who contributed to those magazines were often called muckrakers. Writers like Lincoln Steffens and Ida Tarbell began to expose the ills in society.

The United States, at the time when we became more involved in Cuba, was not having very peaceful relations with Spain. Spain had control over Cuba at the time. The Cubans began to rebel against Cuba, and the United States also went in and helped Cuba out, starting the Spanish-American War. The United States later won the war, though. After this, War in the Philippines began almost as a sequel, but that is a whole different story. Hoope this helped you out.
