The check engine light (service engine soon) comes on and stays on when a problem is detected by the self diagnosis system of your vehicle. Generally, the problem is in the emissions or something that is affecting the effectiveness of the emissions, but other causes can trigger the light to come on, too. To determine the cause, the vehicle will need to be taken to a parts store or a shop that has an OBD2 scanner, or for 1995 and earlier models, an OBD1 scanner, While a scanner will not give you the magic answer, it will give you a code that narrows down the problem area.
What could be the cause of a rattling noise coming from back of a 1999 cougar?
I'm getting a rattling sound, too. But my problem is in my speakers. I'd have to guess you either need new speakers, or your problem could be in the hatch door. A friend of mine had that problem. His hatch window was loose or something, and that rattled, and eventually leaked. Hope that helped.
How do you kill a cougar with a 22?
You make it mad by shooting it and when it attacks you, you strangle it.
How do you change a water pump on a 1993 140 Johnson?
How do you change a water pump impeller on a 1993 Johnson out board
I have a 94 and it is electronic. You have to remove the gauge assy and the odometer unit is inside. There is a place on the internet http://www.dashusa.com/ford_trucks.htm that can send you one with your current milage already dialed in. They quoted me $275.00 trade in and you have to perform the work.
Ignore the Truck part, My cougar and Ford truck odometer failed, and I found this place while researching the truck. They do handle most all cars/trucks.

What are the wires for the headlights on a 1990 Mercury Cougar?
Where are the wires??? for the headlights on a 1990 cougar??If you are having a problem with the headlights .Your problem is in the headlight switch. You can pick a switch up at most part outlets for around $10.00.Note: this is only a standard switch, not one with auto shut off ect.Instructions are included in the package with the new switch concerning how to remove the push-pull shaft. With a small hex tool remove the set screw on the bottom of the knob on the switch. Remove instrument cover to access the switch located inside the dash. Two screws are located at the top of the instrument cover. These screws are inserted point up. You will have to be on your knee out side the car more than likely to get a good view of these 2.This is a "heads up" look.Remove the mounting screw that secures the switch,AFTER you remove the wireing harness.Install in order as removed. There are 3-4 other screws in this cover you will need to remove, but you will notice these as you proceed with removal. Phillips screw driver.Screws underside of instrument cover(2) more than likely, will require a short (4")driver.Don't get frustered, you can do it!!
I had a similar problem and it was the mass air flow sensor. Don't go to the dealer, they will charge you 400.00 for a 60.00 part.
AnswerIf the MAF is at fault, sometimes the wires inside are dirty. I sprayed the heck out of mine with carb spray and then dried it out in the sun for 2 hours before reinstalling. You can use a simple digital volt ohm meter (DC volts between A&B should be 10 or more while running (mine was 13.something).Between C & D, the DC volts should be somewhere above zero (like .35) but under 2 (mine was .86).
I think this voltage range means the MAF is OK.
One more possible thing - my kid's 4.6 sputtered under load and idle fluctuated between 800 and 500 rpm. It was a bad wire. When we pulled it off, the connector stayed on the plug. New wires cured everything.
unplug meter while running if condition improves clean or replace meter
a slipping transmission, a bad tourqe converter, wrong firing order, wrong gap on the plugs, dist. cap put on wrong, to name a few.
How do you change your thermostat in your 1992 Mercury Cougar V6?
The thermostat is actually a very simple change, but you need a cold engine to work on it, as you will be interacting with the engine coolant directly. Disconnect the upper radiatior hose which goes to the front of the engine. At the engine, this hose is connects to a metal fitting (reall a small bent pipe with a flange), which in turn connects to the engine itself. Remove this fitting, and the thermostat is exposed, and can be swapped out. When finished, reverse this process, top off your coolant, and you're all set Please note, when you make this change, you'll need to replace the associatated gasket. Be sure to clean off any remainder from the old gasket, as any residue will cause a bad seal. Also, this is a good time to do a coolant flush, and it's probably not a bad idea to do so. If you have continued overheats, or are loosing coolant, it may be a sign of a MUCH more serious problem, the dreaded head gasket failure! This is an all too common failure on the Ford/Mercury V6, due to the upper and lower halves of the engine being dissimilar metals. If overheating persists, don't hesitate to have a pro look it over. Why will my 1999 cougar won't start?
If it runs for a little while then dies it could be your alternator.. If it ticks or just does nothing its either your battery or starter.
Would crossing wires cause a car to stall?
Possibly, but which wires? It is unlikely, though. Crossed wires would be much more likely to prevent your car from starting or from running after it begins to fire rather than cause it to die after it is started up and has gone into "run" mode.

How do you take out alternator on 2000 Mercury Cougar 4-cylinder?
On my 2000 cougar we started by disconnecting battery. Then lifted up the vehicle from the right side, took out front right tire and wheel wells (splash guards). Then we undo the serpentine belt, tensioner is next to crankshaft. After you take off the belt, unbolt the tensiones (two bolts). You won't be able to just take off the alternator, you must take off the bracket, theres about 4 or 5 bolts you must undo, the tough ones are the ones behind the alternator right under the intake runner. Once you remove the bracket bolts, remove the alternator bolts (3-two in front, one in back) then you can remove alternator from bracket, allowing you to remove the alternator since they would jus hit against the side of the chassis if bracket would not had been removed. Remove bracket from the bottom, alternator must come out through wheel well, the steering knuckle (i think that's what its called) must be removed from the top side, allowing you to swing it towards the front of the car, so you have enough room to remove the alternator.....that's how we did it kind of..it sounds complicated because it is...its more of a two man job if no lift is available, make sure to secure the car on floor jacks before getting underneath it since its the only way to get the bolts for the bracket and the alternator near the intake runners. I've been searching for an answer on how to remove it but all I've found was alternators on V6 cougars..which is a way more complicated way from what I've heard...I hope this helps someone else working on a 2000 mercury cougar 4 cyl. Tools mainly used, 1/2 socket, reg and deep. 1/2 rachet, a size 10 wrench, and an adapter for the rachet...theres some other, I can't remember the sizes but you'll figure it out once you get underneath and try it yourself.

Car starts sometimes sometimes not?
If your engine doe NOT turn over when you turn the key (no crank), you have 3 possible problems. First is a dead battery, though this is easy enough to detect. Second is a bad electrical connection, such as a relay or solenoid that isn't properly closing. Third is a bad starter. If it is the starter, hopefully you don't have much rust on the bolts. On older Cougars (early 90's), the starter is mounted directly to the transmission, and rusted bolts can become a real pain. I'd advise that you take it to a transmission specialist from the start, and let him know what the problem is. He should be able to test the starter while still in place, and if he has to pull it, he can.
