The only way the answer below could be more wrong is if he told you that you needed rocks to set the timing and to remove the bolts with a cutting torch. I'm not sure where he got his information, but I had to leave this answer up so that everyone else that knows anything about a ZX2 can get a good laugh. Anyway, I put a link in the 'related links' section that shows exactly how to set the timing on the ZX2. The ZX2 does not have a timing belt driven water pump and is not a 'V-tech' engine as he stated. It is a serpentine driven water pump and is a 'Zetec' engine.

An Escort water pump is located under the timing cover and is driven by the timing belt. Jack up the right front corner of the vehicle, remove the following: RF wheel, front motor mount, serpentine belt, belt tensioner crankshaft pulley, timing cover, and timing belt, to gain access to and replace the water pump. It is recommennded that you install a new timing belt when you replace the water pump.

2001 ZX2 is equipped with AA 2.0L DOHC V-Tech engine. The water pump is on the front (rt side of car) of the engine block, visible with the hood up. NAPA autoparts replacement instructions are to loosen the belt drive pulley from the pump BEFORE removing the serpentine belt. Once the four bolts are loosde, take the belt off (good time to replace?) remove bolts and old water pump (four more bolts)- it will be tight, but it comes out- clean gasaket area and install new gaaket and pump in reverse order. That includes putting the pulley on and hand tightening the bolts, put on the belt, finish tightening the bolts to the pulley. Don't forget the antifreeze..

Call your local GM dealer (or go online) and check for recalls or campains on your vehicle cocerning this problem.

If the SHIFTER will not go to the reverse position check for an obstruction in the shifter linkage from where the steering shaft exits the cab down along the firewall to the frame where there is some type of bell crank that changes the back and forth movement of the shifter linkage to rotation force connected to the side of the transmission; if there's no reason for the linkage to be bining your next stop is at a reputable tranny shop. Call the BBB and ask.

I have a 96 Nissan Pickeup XE, so I am only assuming the belt configuration is the same or similar. It's handy to have your owners manual when you replace the belts, because if the Pathfinder is like the XE, there are three belts and each are totally different sizes. You'll need to know which one you need, in order to get the correct one from the store. One runs your power steering pump, this one should be closest to the front of the vehicle. The next one is your alternator belt, which may also run your water pump. The third one is your air conditioner compressor belt. The first one comes off by loosening an adjustment bolt that is just below and to the left of the power steering belt. Then you also have to loosen the bolt on the power steering pulley. That should give you enough slack in the belt to get it off. The belt has to come off this pully and off the crank shaft pulley, then you have to finagle it around the blades of the fan to get it totally off. (If your air filter breather runs across the front of your engine space, you may want to remove it to give you more room. All the belts on my truck are directly below the breather adn are hard to reach unless you have really skinny arms.) The next two belts are removed in similar fashion to the first-- loosen the adjustment bolt, then the pulley bolt, then work the old belt over the fan. Obviously the appropriate belts have to go back on in the same manner, and in the proper order. Once the new belts are back on, tighten the pulley bolts first, and then adjustment bolts. Check the tension where your owner's manual indicates and be sure there is just a little "give" to them. You don't want the belts to be too tight. If it is coming from the radiator or the hoses this would mean your antifreeze is boiling in the lines. I would recommend first changing the thermostat and bleeding the air from the rad lines.

On most cars, the upper alternator-mount usually has an elongated hole or slot with a bolt that goes thru it and the alternator-housing. To loosen/tighten the alternator-belt, just loosen this bolt a little and the top of the alternator can then be swiveled to alter tension on the belt ...when the belt is tight enough (you can only move it 1/4" when pushing at a point that's equal distance between 2 of the pulleys, hold it in that position and tighten the bolt. Sometimes if alternator is difficult to move, it can be pried (and held in position) with wood-handle of a hammer (or other non-metallic item) placed between alternator and the mount.

This sounds like a classic case of the belt tension being incorrect. The pump is loaded when turning to full lock in either direction and causes the belt to slip when to loose. Adjust the belt and the noise should go away. If it is excessively worn it may pay to replace the belt.

It might be low on transmission fluid. If it's a 1995 automatic, many of them were defective and needed to be replaced.

Unfortunately, changing the rotors involves repacking the wheel bearings and then getting the torque settings right when you reassemble the hub. I've been looking into this for a long time. Apparently, one needs a bearing press to get the bearing seals back in properly which can be an expensive proposition. Additionally, this is a critical operation. You have to be able to loosen and replace several bolts without stripping them and making a mistake in repacking the bearings or reassembling the 4wd hub can be near catastrophic to your vehicle (if not you). To get the correct torque settings I am looking into Chilton's Nissan 4wd SUV manual. I am also looking into finding a garage with a press that will do the bearings but then give it back for me to assemble. I would greatly appreciate if anyone else has done this and can share a suggestion or two. The bearing cone and seal can be set in with an inexpensive bearing race tool that you can buy at any pats store and a hammer.

if it is an automatic transmission it is a real nitemare. you have to remove the two transmission coolent lines from the radiator, then you have to slide the starter out through the front of the motor, in between the motor mount and the engine, it will only fit if you get it just right.

No, the knock sensor helps the engine computer control ignition timing. The water pump pumps coolant through the engine, heater, and radiator.
