New tires will help a lot because the tread is deeper and absorbs the noise. The more sipes in the tread, the more quitet the tire is. : I also installed stereo sound deadening material (thin sheets of tar with adhesive backing) to the inside of my doors front and back. Hook up a vacuum gague, and try to advance the distributor if the vacuum is low. If that doesnt work, then your cam gear could be off, so reset the timing.

There may be some drag on the AC clutch when it is disengaged as the clutch 'free-wheels' during this time. When you engage the AC ,the clutch 'locks up' and the noise disappears. If the noise gets worse you may need to replace the clutch, if it stays the same and it not very loud, I would not replace it.

A leak of some sort in the air intake hose is the most likely cause. Check the hose for cracks. Tightly tape up hose if cracks are found, replace intake hose as soon as you can.
