Odometers

I don't know but it happend to me too this morning....:S

If your odometer/speedometer stopped working, then you must replace the "vehicle speed sensor" located on top of the differential if your have a manual transmission.

It will depend on what the specific charges are. Felonies in Arkansas are set at either 3 or 6 years depending on the level. Misdemeanors will be set at 1 year. This can be tolled for up to 3 years if they are absent from the state.

You cant it is computerized if you take miles off a car it is against the law for one and you will get caught their is no way to hide a odometer that has been tampered with dont even try you will get caught

Ok. This is a pretty open question, but, here goes. If we are talking about your 2000, or newer silverado, you better start by having your Chevy dealer run what is called a "vis", on your "vin". lol. A vis is a vehicle inquiry system, a system that GM uses to track open campaigns, re-programs, and recalls. There was a glitch in the above mentioned Silverado odometer, and speedo, as well. Check it out. Note, if you are driving that Silverado, depending on the year, there may be a bunch of other open campaigns on that truck, as well. One for the tailgate straps, the steering column, and several others. If it is any other vehicle, I must urge you that odometer tampering is a crime. You must have a qualified shop, or dealership, handle that for you, unless it is a classic car, in which case I would say just buy a new one.

ILLEGALLY

It can be done if you possess specials electrical/computer equipment. There are web-sites offering this as a service. I will not link to them as it is generally only done for nefarious purposes (winding the mileage back to make the car sell for more).

However it is not actually illegal to adjust an odometer in some jurisdictions, as there is always the possibility of buying a second hand instrument pack/speedo and having the mileage reading on it altered to match the actual on the car it is then fitted to.

On most cars, you cannot change it without some special tools ... or something. However, when the speedometer fell of my 91 Toyota tercel (I mean, serously, It fell off!!!!) I took off the wheel, the dash cover, and then broke the side of the plastic cover to put it back on. I could have adjusted the mileage from there, but at 149000, it didn't seem worth it. And its highly illegal.

(the above would seem to refer to older vehicles that had a mechanical odometer that could easily be changed using a small screwdriver to move the wheels, rather than more moden LCD speedometers that were developed to prevent this.)

Just bought a 2006 and there is knob sticking out of the display at the top right that you push in and it changes the display from the odometer to the trip meter. The information is apparently stored in the PCM and however their is a memory in the instrument cluster itself.

This will vary from car to car and from aftermarket speedo to speedo

If only the speedometer is on the circuit normally a 2.5 amp fuse is lots.

The speed sensor is mounted at the top of the transmission towards the rear. It has a two wire connector and one mounting screw.

Depends on the car. Some are on the transmission, some on the axle, newer ones dont even have an "odometer sensor" but are rather a computer function tied into the vehicle speed sensors.

Late model GM instrument clusters are not servicable. cluster replacement is the only option. Another option may be that the light bulb itself has burnt out. You know see this as the odometer is still working when you shine a light on it. The light bulb is dirt cheap but in order to get at it you have to take the entire dash apart just to get at it which will cost you a few dollars.

The most common reason believe it or not is the seat belt contorl unit in the center console right below the park brake.....People spill coffee on it and other liquids and cause it to fault. This is assuming you have the old style with Auto shoulder belts...

There is a cable which runs from your front axle to the odometer/speedometer. Inside this cable is a gear box. As the front axle spin it transfers how fast your axle is spinning to your speedometer. This also spins your odometer. Something is either worn out in the cable, gearbox, or one of the ends of the cable has become disconnected. It's a very inexpensive fix.

Replace the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) in your transmission. It is the same part number for an automatic transmission and a manual transmission in those year models.

because they are broken.

tripometer doesn't work either.

As per info under Driver Information Center (DIC) (Option) on page 2-77 of your "Owner's Manual": To change display to a Metric or English reading, press and hold the RESET & MODE buttons for 3 (three) seconds...

The button on the steering wheel marked "step" changes the odometer to trip 1 and trip 2. You can also reset these 2 different trips to zero as needed. When you press the trip button multiple times, you will also get the outdoor temperature.

It can measure either.

Cars with mechanical gauges are built according to what's used in the country where they're originally sold, and cars with electronic gauges can usually be changed from one to the other.

Most Dodge/Chrysler vehicles with digital odometers store the milage in the engine control computer.

If the odo hasn't been tampered with it'll show the total distance the car has travelled.

Anyone can sell a car with a broken odometer legally by disclosing in the bill of sale that the "true mileage is unknown". Contact your local DMV - some states (I believe California is one of them) which forbids any car to be sold, or operated without a functioning odometer.
