Why does the spanish language use upside down exclamation points and question marks?

Spanish is different than English. The syntax of a sentence does not always tell you immediately

whether the sentence is a statement or a question, so using the inverted question mark

at the beginning warns you that a question is on the way and makes everybody's life easier.

Compare the following sentences and their Spanish versions.

There is a lemon tree in her backyard.

Is there a lemon tree in her backyard?

In English, the verb goes to the beginning in the question, so a question mark at the end is enough.

To Spanish now:

En el patio de su casa hay un limonero.

In Spanish the words stay where they are when asking the question, so that is why the Real Academia de la Lengua Española (the country's official institution in language matters) determined that two question marks were needed.

¿En el patio de su casa hay un limonero?

The same applies to exclamation marks. The inverted one at the beginning of the sentence lets you know that the speaker is expressing some kind of emotion whether surprise, anger, bewilderment or whatever.

Hope this helps!

How do you select the topic for your question?

Sometimes it's difficult to choose the right topic, or FAQ, but finding the right one is important, so that those who can give a good answer can find it quickly. The mechanism is quite simple. After you confirm the phrasing of the question, you'll be given a chance to select the FAQ/topic of the question. Clicking on the main FAQ will show a list of subtopics, some of which may have subtopics of their own. Click the radio button next to the topic that most applies to the question. Later you'll have the chance to add other FAQs (up to 3) to the question. Sometimes finding the right one takes a while. If all else fails, you can just dump it into the Miscellaneous category and let a Supervisor find the right FAQ(s). As a Supervisor, though, I can say we appreciate askers making their best guess up front. :)

Where did the quotation 'I am your huckleberry' come from?

The phrase has ties to Arthurian lore. A Knight, coming to the service of a damsel would lower his lance and receive a huckleberry garland from the lady ( or kingdom) he would be defending. Therefore, "I am your huckleberry" may well have been spoken to the Earps and the statement's meaning may be "I am your champion".The "Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, H-O" by J.E. Lighter (Random House, New York, 1997) lists several meanings: 1. minuscule amount. 2. a fellow; character; boy. "one's huckleberry," the very person for the job. 3. bad treatment. "the huckleberry" is similar to "the raspberry." 4. a foolish, inept or inconsequential fellow.

Another huckleberry phrase: "above one's huckleberry" -- beyond one's abilities. And "huckleberry train," one that stops at every station.

In the movie "Tombstone", Doc Holliday (played by Val Kilmer) spoke this phrase to Johnny Ringo on two occasions, (never to the Earps). Ringo was looking for a gunfight both times. In that usage, the meaning was from definition 2 of the Random House Dictionary of American Slang, meaning "I'm the man for the job".

What book in the Bible ends with a question mark?

JONAH

Chapter 4, verses 10 and 11:

But the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?"

Jonah was a prophet in Israel. Nineveh was an incredibly evil city, not a part of Israel. Their evil became so great that God was about to remove them from the earth, for the good of everyone. Jonah was sent by God to warn them in advance, and provide a chance to repent and avoid disaster. Jonah would rather see them destroyed. Before you think that this is an example of vindictiveness on the part of God and his people, stop and consider that Nineveh was a major threat to Israel, and consider that they were absolutely ruthless with their captives, including skinning them alive. Would you have gone to warn them, or would you hope for their destruction? Also consider that the most vindictive character in this story has more in common with you and me than he does with God. Jonah finally goes to warn the Ninevites, then leaves the city, and sits on a hill under a tree to watch it's destruction from the front row. When the people repent, and the destruction does not occur, he is incensed. Jonah 4:10-11 is God's final response to Jonah's bad attitude. Note that if the destruction of the people didn't matter to him, at least the horrendous waste of good cattle might soften him. You can't say the Bible lacks irony.

What is a valid question?

A valid question is one that:

a) has relevance and some degree of connectivity to the topic

b) is logicall consistent (ie should have only one unambiguouis interpretation).

c) can be expected to have an answer that is realistic (ie. is known or can be known, eg with further research)

d) may have multiple answers but these should be testable (ie. evidence based). Multiple answers will probably result from imprecision in defining the question. Eg. different people may have different answers to the swame question if they have different experiences and different points of view.
