How do you prepare rice that is not cooked?
Start with twice the volume of water as rice. If you have one cup of rice start with two cups of water.
Bring the water to a boil and then add the rice. Cover the pot and reduce the heat to a very low level. Just enough heat to keep the water hot but not enough to keep it rapidly boiling. Simmer is the term.
In about 20 minutes the rice should be done. If you used too much heat or not enough water the rice will stick to the bottom of the pan.
For a little more flavor use canned or "boxed" chicken or vegetable stock. The stock will add flavor and nutrition.
Indian spice shops sell spices to add to the rice, either pure spice or with dried onion, garlic, etc
Another recipeWash the rice, empty the water, add water, swirl the rice to make sure the rice is even, than put your hand into the water until the water comes over your second knuckle, bring the rice to boil, put a lid on the pot, than turn down the water to low, cook about 20 min. Turn off the stove and let the pot upon the stove for about 10 min, with the lid on. Perfect rice. This method can vary for brown rice or aborio rice (Rice used in Risotto).
Brown Rice often requires more water if you do not want it to be to tough. For brown rice I usually use 1:2 1/3 ratio that is for every cup of rice I had 2 1/3 cups of liquid. And do not wash aborio rice if you are making Risotto. But other then that the methods above work perfect. But the best way in my opinion is buy yourself a rice cooker and follow the directions perfect rice every time.
Tip:Rice cooks very well in the Microwave.Add 1 tsp course salt, 1 tbs oil, boiling water and rice in a glass microwave dish with lid. you can wrap the closed dish with a dish towel in case the water boils over. Cook for 20 min and leave in microwave for another 10 min.
To reduce cooking time for rice you can add all the ingredients together as above in a large food flask (leave about a 1/3 empty space as the rice swells), or in a covered dish.
When you get back from work the rice will be partially cooked and you can completed the cooking on the stove or in the microwave. Remember to an some extra water before cooking.
For two cups of rice rice add an extra 1/2 cup water to compensate for evaporation.

Why was rice chosen to serve as money in medieval China?
The way that a country's economy for trade typically develops is first by using a barter system, then by coins and precious metals, and then by fiat money.
Bartering has several problems, most notably the coincidence of needs problem and a wheat-field farmer need what the other produces a direct barter swap is impossible for seasonal fruit that would spoil before the grain harvest.
A solution is to indirectly trade fruit for wheat through a third, "intermediate", commodity: the fruit is exchanged for this when it ripens. If this intermediate commodity doesn't perish and is reliably in demand throughout the year (e.g. copper, gold, or wine) then it can be exchanged for wheat after the harvest.
The function of the intermediate commodity as a store-of-value can be standardized into a widespread commodity money reducing the coincidence of wants problem. By overcoming the limitations of simple barter, a commodity money makes the market in all other commodities more liquid. This is why the Chinese used rice and a standard measure of trade. The resource was readily available; widely (if not entirely) recognized and accepted.
