How do you replace the serpentine belt on a 1993 Mercury Cougar?
To remove the serpenteen belt on this vehicle, you must first locate the spring loaded tensioner. You will need a 1/2" breaker bar or a socket to recoil the spring load. doing this will release the tension on the belt. You can then remove the belt.
NOTE: If you are just changing the belt with a new one, DO NOT remove the tool until the new belt is in place. You should not have to remove any parts to change the belt.
How do you find the length of a serpentine belt by the product number?
The short answer is to call a knowledgeable local parts store and ask him. In the event that you have one sitting in your garage and don't know what car it goes to and don't have a phone handy, you might be able to find out thru the following example:
The Kelly-Springfield product number for certain Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth mini-vans with the 3.0L engine and air conditioning is 805k6. This means that this particular serpentine belt has a nominal length of 80.5 inches and has 6 ribs. I don't know what the "k" means. It may indicate a/c. Most serpentine belts are measured to include a/c because most cars have that feature. Because of the operation of the idler arm I would imagine, for example that an 80 or 81 inch belt with 6 ribs would work just fine.
The Gates belt for the same car is K060806, which is a good fit to the k-s number.
The Dayco number is 5060805 and does have 6 ribs.
The Adelco number is 6k806 and has 6 ribs, but is 81 1/8 inches in length. Obviously, it works even though it is 5/8" longer.
A good way to install the belt is to observe the belt routing scheme decal under the hood or in the owners manual. The decal or owner's manual may have the OEM
model number, also.
The K I believe is just a letter designation used by the belt industry to indicate an automotive application standard and just a series letter. The number after is the number of ribs the belt has.
Other letters are used for different applications, belt types etc. to fit purposes such as air compressors, tables saws up to milling machines etc.. That's what I think is the case but don't quote me on that.

How do you replace the belt tensioner?
This is not a easy job what engine do you have. You need the service manual without it it could be a impossible task.ps it a 3.8 engine
AnswerSupport the car with a jack stand and then support the engine with a jack under the oil pan (use a piece of soft lumber between the jack and the pan or you'll be removing the pan to fix it). Remove the passenger's front wheel. Remove the push pins holding the weather shield. Remove the shield. Remove the upper motor mount. Remove the belt. The belt tensioner is held in by two bolts. Raise the engine with jack carefully until you can get your hand in to remove the top tensioner bolt. Lower the motor with the jack very slowly until you can access the bottom bolt and remove it. The tensioner will come out through the fenderwell. Put the new one in the same way. Put the bottom bolt back, raise the engine, top bolt, level the engine, attach the belt, reinstall the motor mount, weathershield and wheel. If you forget the weathershield your belt might squeak when it rains. If this sounds like a pain in the neck, take it your local shop. How do you change a serpentine belt on a 1996 ford escort?

You need to route the belts so when you pump the handle down it is the one doing the power stroke. It must wrap around the ratchet mechanism and attach with a set screw. You will have to experiment until you get the belts working together with the handle travel. Hope this helps. If you have picture of the forge I would like to see it. I must have one about like yours and I am having trouble getting the clutch working on mine.

Serpentine Belt
Under the hood should be a diagram of the belt, this is your best reference without the service manual. All you have to determine is which direction to rotate the belt tensioner, and then put the belt back on as shown in the diagram.
If it is not you can run down to your nearest auto parts store and they can print it out for you or just buy the Hayes or chilton manual on your car. It only cost a few bucks and it well helps you out later down the line if something else brakes.
Relieve Serpentine Belt Tension.
Before removing the belt, note its routing around all applicable pulleys for ease of installation.
1. Using a box end wrench on the tensioner pulley center bolt, rotate the tensioner assembly clockwise.
2. While holding the tensioner in this position, remove the alternator drive belt from one or two of the applicable pulleys.
Use a box end wrench to rotate the tensioner pulley assembly clockwise to relieve serpentine belt tension
1. Slowly release the tensioner, and remove the box end wrench from the center bolt.
2. Remove the alternator drive belt from the remaining applicable pulleys.
To install:
When installing the drive belt on the pulleys, ensure that it is properly seated in all of the pulley grooves.
1. Using the box end wrench, rotate the tensioner clockwise again, then position the drive belt on all of the pulleys.
2. Slowly release the tensioner until it eliminates all drive belt slack.
3. Inspect the tensioner indicator to be sure that the belt is properly tensioned. If the belt tension is incorrect, the belt should be replaced with a new one, or, if installing a new belt, the belt may not be the correct belt for your vehicle.
4. Then start the engine. Ensure that the drive belt works properly.
5. Stop the engine, then double-check to ensure that the belt is properly seated on all applicable pulleys.
When you changed serpentine belt on a 1999 ford zx2 what would cause it not to start?
You had to have disrupted something else while you were changing the serpentine belt. I've driven a short distance without the belt at all so just changing it shouldn't have any side effect like not starting. Check all your electrical connections and be certain you didn't dissconnect anything while you changed the belt. It's possible that your battery is dead if you drove a distance without the belt in place. The belt is needed for the alternator to charge the battery but this would be the only way I can think of that changing the belt would cause your car not to start.

How to change alternator belt on a 97 Nissan Xe truck?
I got a 96 XE and it was trouble fcor a while. There's a pinch bolt facing forward on the top bracket to the alt. Loosen this pinch bolt, then loosen the long bolt going through a bracket and through the alternator. You may have to remove the splash guard under the engine to reach it but it will let the alt. pivot. Third, move the alt. to loosen the belt by turning the longer bolt next to the pinch bolt. Yhis will move the square piece. To tighten I would tighten the long lower bolt enough to barely move the alt. by pushing with a little force. Then tighten the bolt through the square piece which will tighten belt. Check belt tension while tightening the pinch bolt. Readjust as necessary to achieve proper belt tension. Lastly tighten the lower long bolt securly. I used some loc-tite to keep from vibrating loose.
Such an easy belt change! I learned how after overtightening and cracking the upper bracket and bending the bolt as well. I wish "I" had asked someone first....
How to figure out when to change the serpentine belt in 2001 Toyota corolla car?
If you look at the surface of the belt on the smooth side there will be fine cracks in the surface. Very bad ones will have missing pieces in the ridges. ===ANOTHER ANSWER=== ANOTHER WAY to tell is by the mileage. If you have 60,000 miles or more, I would chage it or have it changed. It is well worth the investment, because if the belt has been slipping and gotten glazed over, or just regular wear and tear, you don't want to wait until you are on the road, broken down saying "damn I should have had that stupid belt changed!! A new belt will never hurt your car and it could save a LOT of aggravation! Hope this helps. P.S. I'm not sure what the first poster meant by "looking at the surface of the belt", BUT the top surface that you can see at a glance will always look "good". You have to twist the belt to see the side that has contact with the pulleys to see wear and cracks.

How do you change the serpentine belt on a 1993 Chevrolet Cavalier?
The easiest way is to get a serpentine belt tool. Available at Harbor Freight very reasonably priced. The Cavalier/Sunbird 3.1 has almost no room between the frame and the idler pulley. The idler pulley is in the "middle" of all other pulleys. To loosen the belt you pull it towards the front of the car. There is a 3/8 hole in the end of the pulley. You might be able to get a 3/8 drive ratchet in there but it won't be long enough to get the leverage to move the pulley. Either a piece of pipe slipped over the ratchet handle, or a deep socket with a long extension slipped over the handle will give you the leverage to move it. I've done it this way in the past, but the special tool is much easier.

You really need to hit the local parts store and get a diagram. It is fairly simple if you have a serpentine belt.
How do you move the tension pulley?
There should be a "square" cut into the pulley bracket that fits either a 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch ratchet or breaker bar to allow you to remove tension from this pulley allowing you to replace the serpentine belt.

How do you put the surpnten belt on a 1999 dodge stratus?
Loosen the alternator by loosening the bolt on the top left of the alt. ( looking at it from the front) then backing off the tension adjustment on the front of the mount. Remove the old belt, install new belt ( should be a routing diagram on a sticker at the front of the engine compartment) Then retighten alternator. Pretty simple, just a bugger to get at!
