Serpentine Belts

A serpentine belt is a single, continuous belt utilized in driving devices – such as power steering pump, alternator and others – in an automotive engine. First used by Mercedes-Benz, the belt is more efficient than the older multiple belt system.

How does the serpentine belt go on a 1994 Dodge Caravan V6?

locate the "tensioner" pulley, on the schematic that is under your hood, on top of the radiator. Then place a socket on the bolt head in the middle of that pulley, and with a breaker bar, pull the entire pulley towards the front of the van, releasing the tension, and letting the belt slip off easily. Repeat this procedure once you have the new belt routed around most of the pulleys properly and slip it over the tensioner pulley last. Double check belt alignment on all pulleys, make sure it is well tensioned, then start your van and let it idle about 5 to 10 seconds, shut it off, and recheck the belt alignment and tension. If all looks well, then close the hood and call it a job well done.

Replace the belt by fitting it around the pulleys and lastly loosening the tension with the tensioner/idler pulley to allow the belt to fit over the last pulley.

  1. Attach a 15mm socket or wrench to the bolt in the middle of the tensioner pulley.
  2. On all 3.0L (OHV) engines, rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.
  3. On 3.0L (DOHC) engines, rotate the tensioner counter-clockwise to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the pulleys.
Replace the belt by fitting it around the pulleys and lastly loosening the tension with the tensioner/idler pulley to allow the belt to fit over the last pulley.

Go to the Autozone website and put in the information on your car and they will show you a diagram.

Put a wrench on the (spring loaded) tensioner/idler pulley and take out the tension. You can then remove the belt. Replace the belt by fitting it around the pulleys and lastly loosening the tension with the tensioner/idler pulley to allow the belt to fit over the last pulley.

Should be located on the underside of the hood.

Hey Nikki==It should be on the fan shroud. If it isn't and you don't have an owners manual, go to a used car lot and find a like car and draw a schematic or if you haven't taken it off yet, draw your schematic before you remove it. GoodluckJoe

How do you replace serpentine belt on 1999 Mercury Sable?

Most cars and trucks today have what is called a serpentine belt which runs most accessories. They are very dependable and usually easy to replace. To decide if your belt needs replacing, simply look at the grooved side of the belt to see if it is cracking badly. A couple of cracks every 3 inches is normal, but if you see cracks every 1-2 inches I would recommend that you replace it. On most cars and trucks the procedure is basically the same. First off, get the correct belt by bringing your cars VIN number to the parts store(located on your cars dashboard) the parts store may need it. If there are two choices, get them both so you can complete the repair. Once you have the correct belt, take a minute to review how the belt runs across the pulleys and also check to see if your car/ truck has a underhood diagram of belt routing in case you need it. In most cases you will need a socket wrench or breaker bar with either a 3/8" and /or 1/2" head on it and possibly a short extension. Some models may require a wrench of these similar sizes. Now that you are ready to go to work, you will need to find the spring loaded tensioner which is generally located near the top of the belt path; it usually has a shinny pulley on it. Look at the tensioner and insert the tool into it and apply opposing pressure to release the belt. Now, simply install the new belt making sure it fits into the grooves on all the pulleys. Start the car to check it and you are done and you saved yourelf some money!

How do you replace the multifunction switch on a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

Procedure
  • Best to disconnect the negative battery cable for this project - many of the wires involved are 'hot' all the time.

  • remove the lower column dash-cover from under the steering wheel

  • remove the bottom of the column cover - a few screws hold it to the bottom-side of the upper column cover

  • Upper Cover - you may be able to twist the upper cover away enough to get at the multi-function switch - otherwise, it too will have to come off.

This will require removing the ignition key cylinder (See "Related Questions" below)

  • unplug the wiring harness connections

  • remove the 2 torx mounting screws and remove the old switch.

  • mount the new switch and plug the wire harnesses back in ( they only fit where they are supposed to )

Removing the lock cylinderIf you have the key and can turn the cylinder
  • Turn the ignition to the run position
  • Push a long 1/8" diameter pin (drill bit?) up into a hole located on the underside of the steering column in the lock cylinder area.
    • Up in the hole there is a little release pin you are trying to depress to allow easy removal of the cylinder.
    • If you have trouble locating the hole, remove the lower steering column shroud.
  • Once that pin is pressed the cylinder should pull out fairly easy.

Replacing a Not-Working Lock Cylinder
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers.
  3. Insert a 0.125 drill bit in the hole at the top of the cylinder housing and drill out the retaining pin.
NOTE Be careful! Don't drill anything but the pin hole straight in
  4. Remove the lock cylinder
  5. Clean out all the metal shavings
To Install:
  1. Turn the new lock cylinder to accessory position
  2. Press and hold the retainer pin in, insert the lock cylinder into the housing.
Test it out and put everything back together - don't forget the battery cable too.
  3. Turn the key to the OFF position the release the retaining pin and lock it in

take the collar off the steering wheel "neck" cover. there are a couple of screws holding the multi function switch on, take those off, unhook the switch and reverse to install new one.

Can a bad serpentine belt cause hard shifting as well?

No, the only way would be if the belt wasn't driving the alternator causing low voltages to the electronic transmission.

How does one change the timing belt on a 1994 Ranger?

By timnig belt are you talking about the main drive belt that runs all the accessories and the water pump on the front of the engine. If this is the belt get a 15mm wrench with a long handle (24"). put this on the take up pulley on the front of the engine and pull it over to take the tension off the belt. A picture of how the belt is run is in front of the engine as you open the hood. After removing the old belt replace with the new belt using the picture as a guide. Make sure the new belt is seated on all the pullies before you start the engine.

How do you change the belts on a 1986 Chevy Celebrity and where are all the loosening bolts?

I've got an 85 2.5 celebrity and am assuming that your 86 is similar. Most people might think this is a stupid question, but I've spend hours trying to locate all the bolts to loosen. The alternator belt is straightforward. Loosen the alternator bolt in located in the slider portion and the pivot bolt (15mm on mine). The compressor belt is straightforward. Loosen the two compressor adjustment bolts in the slider slot and the loosen the pivot bolt. This belt will be hard to remove even with the compressor fully pushed down. Take some vitamins. The worse belt by far is the power steering belt. Loosen the pivot bolt on the bottom of the power steering "canister". There are two adjustment bolts to loosen from my memory. The one that is easy to find is on the engine side of the power steering canister. The other is hard to see but is located on the pulley side between two of the pulleys. It's also hard to get a wrench on. But, you've got to find and loosen this bolt. I cringe when this belt breaks. Good Luck!!!

Can you remove a seized ac compressor on a 96 Taurus and use a smaller serp belt?

Look fer it!Please Check this out first ---- Unplug the clutch control 1 or 2 wire plug on the front of the compressor and maybe you can keep on trucking with no further modifications needed. The clutch causes a magnetic physical connection to the compressor when it is told to do so by the AC switches or computer circuits sending 12 volts out to make the clutch operate. If the compressor has siezed up and the AC is cut off there would be no problem - but - the defrost position can cut the compressor on also. Try this fix. woody

Just wanted to add this: Part number 34166 ($40) is a replacement pulley that mounts in the place of the compressor

How do you release the belt tension at the tensioner?

There are two types of tensioners, spring tension, and bolt adjusted tension.

spring tensioners, place the appropriate sized wrench on the nut in the middle of the pulley and turn clockwise, the wrench will give you ample leverage to pull back the arm with ease.

Bolt adjusted, you will need to locate and loosen the jam nuts on the tensioner and wrench the adjusting bolt so that the pulley moves away from the belt, once sufficient clearance is achieved the belt will slide off and the new one will go right on. refer to the owners manual for proper tension, too tight and it will break or damage the driven components, too loose and it will squeal.

Please make sure you have the belt routing diagram handy, you can usually find it on the inside of the hood, owners manual, or a repair manual either from Haynes or Chilton, available at your local auto parts store.

How do you loosen the suspension belt on a Ford zx2 1999 when you cannot find a tensioner?

Hello. I used this to change out belt on my girlfriends 1999 ZX2. First off. There is no way around that this will truly be one big pain in the butt. Anyways Your best bet is to have a really log ratchet wrench or box wrench. I mean really long at least a foot minimum or longer. You are also gonna have a hose in your way but that should be no problem. You are going to have to push that sucker almost all the way past that hose *if your going through the bottom which will also be your best bet* if you wanna get that tensioner loose enough to fight the belt around anything. In my case I had a buddy work with the belt and we left the power steering pump for last as it is a little bit easier to access. I suppose you could do the AC pump but your gonna be putting a lot of arm into that tensioner and if you don't have a lift or on an angle street like i was and couldn't use the jack. Which this can still be done without it. AnywaysIf you mean the accessory belt (a v-ribbed belt on the passenger side of the engine that loops around the alternator, a/c, crank, etc) then the tensioner is located just above the a/c pulley.

If you are under the car, the ac pulley is farthest forward and closest to the ground. It has a triangular bracket and 3 bolts on it. The small, smooth pulley just above it is the tensioning pulley.

To loosen it you need a 13mm box end wrench or a rather short socket. To relieve the tension on the belt attach the wrench to the bolt on the middle of the pulley and turn it clock-wise, it will move about 4 inches if you can push it far enough.

How to replace serpentine belt on 98 mercury mystique?

Have you checked the Contour.org web page and forums? Lots of great information out there for us Contour and Mystique owners. Need to jack up car on right side. Get your new bel on all the pulleys and pull the tensioner back up and slip the new belt on.

How do you replace a serpentine belt on a 2001 VW Beetle?

The first thing you have to do is to be able to bend your hands completely backwards and be able to reach under the car while your arm is in the top Yes it can be that bad I just finished mine. First disconect the air intake boot and vacuum line off the intake next draw a diagram of the pullys and how the belt wraps around each one of the pullys because vw doesn't give you a diagram under the hood, at least mine didn't have one. Then take an adjustable wrench (cresent) and on the tensioner there is a tab sticking straight up place wrench on this and pull back to releave belt tension but don't slipoff the tab. Remove belt (thats the easy part) I found if you have a helping hand it is much easyer for install. Put the belt around all the upper pullys first have your helper pull the tensioner back and slip the belt on the bottom pully last i mean the power steering pully the one on the bottom closest to the front of the car. reinstall hoses. Good Luck I did the same thing this person did, except that I took my digtal camera and took a few pictures of how the belt went on and over the pulleys then printed the pictures out and then you had the pictures to go by when putting on the new belt.
