A serpentine belt is a single, continuous belt utilized in driving devices – such as power steering pump, alternator and others – in an automotive engine. First used by Mercedes-Benz, the belt is more efficient than the older multiple belt system.

How do you change the serpentine belt on a 2005 Kia Optima?

If it is anything like my 2004 Kia Optima with the 2.4l that comes with aircondition, it is relatively painless.

First - open the hood and look to the passenger side of the engine. In between the block and the belt tensioner there are two 14 mm nuts. The one hidden down by the block is the securing bolt (1) - the one out front (2) is used for tension adjustment.

Loosen bolt number 1 then loosen bolt number 2 - the belt will become loose. Keep going until you can literally pull the belt off the top pully's then work the belt off of the rest of the pulleys (if you have trouble just leave the belt in place; the next step will make it easier to remove the belt).

Now jack the car up and remove the passenger side front tire. Behind the tire is a plastic shield. Using a 10 mm socket with an extension remove the 3 bolts holding this shield and pull this down and out.

Now get under the care near the passenger side front and locate a second plastic shield. Remove the 2 bolts and the shield comes right off.

Now you should be able to see the main crank pulley and the bottom part of the air conditiong pump. If you didn't remove it before before - remove the belt from the bottom.

Take your new belt and wrap it around the main shaft then snake it around the underside of the air conditioning pump. Go back up top and work the belt around the rest of the pulleys.

Make sure the belt is seated properly and tension it back up. Be sure to secure the tensioner bolt. Just for kicks start the car and see if there are any squeaks with the air conditioning running. If there are then tighten the tensioner by redoing the process until there are no more squeaks. If there are still squeaks then something else is going on. Could be a dirty pulley or bad bearing(?)

Replace the plastic shields and the front tire. Viola' you're done.

All done for about $30 and a little time.

How do you remove the serpentine belt drive idler pully on a 1994 Ford Ranger 4 liter engine?

You have to buy the assembly with the mounting bracket. You can't just buy the pulley itself. You buy the whole assembly and remount it to the engine.

that is not the whole truth. you can buy the pulley by its-self. the part is sold on eBay for $33, my father is having this problem and we have to replace the pulley

Where can you find a diagram for a 2001 Dodge Stratus RT serpentine belt?

Hello,Just to let you know an 01 stratus r/t does-not have a serpentine belt; it has a drive belt and 2 others belts as well. I also have an 01 stratus r/t and when I went to replace i had found this out, basically if you have air, which most strat's do I believe its 2 to 3 belts you will need to change. also little heads up about this car, since you have r/t I'm assuming you have 3.0li engine, so if you plan to change timing belt, be sure to also change your water-pump at same time as it is driven off the timing belt, also one last thing, OUR cars are known to break the motor mount that is located right above belts I would highly recommend changing that as well, you will feel much more stable shifts smother idling

.... Good luck

How to change a serpentine belt on a 1995 mercury cougar xr 7 46 liter?

Place a wrench on the pulley that pulls the belt tight. Its not the A/c, alternater, water pump, or fan but the other one. This should make the belt loose then pull it off. Replace with a new belt. Ensure that the belt is in the correct sequence as it was before.

How do you loosen the tension pulley in order to change the serpentine belt on a 1992 Dynasty 33 liter engine?

There isn't a whole lot of extra room around the serpentine tensioner pulley so here is what I do...

I put a box end wrench on the tensioner pulley nut. Then I push on the opposite end of the wrench with a long piece of wood... something thin enough to fit in the space you do have. I think I use a board that is about a half inch wide/thick. It helps if you have someone else remove the belt when you push on the wrench end.

How do you replace the serpentine belt on a G5?

The belt is tensioned by a spring loaded tensioner. The tensioner can be pulled to the side to release belt tension then the old belt can be removed and the new one installed. This may be easier with a helper. Always disconnect the negative battery cable for safety.

How do you put a serpentine belt on a 2000 Nissan maxima?

1) Disconnect negative battery cable. Jack up right front of car. Be sure to protect yourself with jackstands and rear wheel chocks. Safety first! 2) Remove the engine undercover (plastic under engine protector) on the right side 3) Remove the right front wheel. 4) remove the right hand side inspection cover inside the wheel well. (I did not say this was a simple job.) 4a) Optional: Curse Nissan engineers for lack of foresight in maintenance. 5) Loosen the belt idler pulley (center of the pulley itself, I think its 14mm, but Do NOT loosend the bracket bolt) 6) Loosen the idler pulley tension (large, vertical nut above the idler pulley) 7) remove the belt. 8) replace with new belt. Install is opposite of removal. You may have to wiggle a bit to slip it on correctly, but be patient, it will go. To replace alternator: 9) get your butt under the car, fully supported on jackstands, and remove the 4 Air conditioner bolts 10)Slide the A/C compressor forward (don't drop it on your head!) 11) Disconnect the alternator harness connector (This may be tricky to do while mounted. If so, then with the help of a friend, remove the alternator following the steps below and remove the connection after the alternator is loose. DO NOT let the alternator hang by the wiring harness connections.) 12) remove the wiring harness bracket from the alternator. 13) Remove the alternator upper and lower bolts. Slide Alternator down and forward to remove. 14) Install is opposite of removal. Good Luck!

How do you replace a serpentine belt in a 1999 Chevy cavalier and do you need any special tools?

Hey there, To replace the serpentine belt on a 1999 cavalier, is a fairly simple operation provided you have the right tools. You will need a *OEM* brand serpentine belt kit, if you dont want to buy it($33 beans), you can rent one from your local auto-zone or advance auto parts store. About half way down the passenger side of the engine, there is a belt tensioner. This is spring loaded and holds the belt tight against the pulleys during normal operation. you take the long red handled lever in the serpentine kit and put its 3/8 square socket head into the 3/8 square hole in the belt tensioner. You then simply push the lever CLOCKWISE until you have released enough tension on the belt to slide it off of the pulleys. It then can be removed completely and a replacement put on. To replace the belt simply reverse the procedure. There is a serpentine belt diagram on the underhood of most GM vehicles. !!!Caution!!! On My 2001 Cavalier with factory ac, I had to work around the ac lines, place a bottle jack under the engine(not on the oil pan) and wind up unbolting the passenger side motor mount, and the radiator overflow tank in order to gain enough access to service the very tight area around the pulleys. This may be different for you TK out!!!!
