Serpentine Belts

If the belt slipped off, this is an indication that the belt is worn out or the tensioner needs replacing, or both. You put the belt back on by pulling the tensioner back, sliding the belt over all the pulleys in the correct manner, and releasing the tensioner to apply tension to the belt. There should be a diagram of the serpentine belt routing procedure under the hood of your vehicle.

You'll hear an annoying squeal. Maybe eventually the battery might die on you if the belt is slipping enough. Much of it depends on what the belt is actually driving which is probably more than the fan.

Large evaporative emissions vapor leak.

Check gas cap and all hoses from the engine to the gas tank.

As a temporary try a short belt. The idler assembly is often the adjuster and the bearings are no maintenance sealed-for-life so change it, fit a new serpentine and properly adjust it. Too much tension will kill bearings, too little and it will slip (compromising charging rate) or slip right off again.

First, remove the broken belt very carefully. Then, prepare your work area. Having the right tools are critical. A serpentine belt remover/adjuster, Mopar Part #23-w3221 can really help save you time. It is a silver plier-looking tool with a gold tip that has a solid microprocessor embedded into the base.

Now, jack up the front end with tire jacks and stablizers. Make sure your battery is fully disconnected. Take your spare key, and insert into the lip of the fuse box and twist 1/3 turn to the left. Now press hard, forcing the top to pop. Wash out the air cleaner while your at it or you may wish you had. Dust in a power converter steering box modulator rack box is a no no.

Ok, pop a couple of beers, chug one and sip the other. At this point you will either start getting sleepy or creepy. Pop a couple more beers, power drain these down your esophogus and hopefully the creepy thing will fade quickly.

Intall the belt according to the package schematic, but without adding the d-clip retainer ring supplied. You may need to bend the alignment washer 6-7 degrees south of the ring equator balance indicator. Once the belt is loosely hung on the balance jam level bar, take up about 34mm of slack. More or less, and you can kiss the new belt goodbye, so don't be an idiot.

Pop the last two beers of the six pack, and make it a day.

Remove surpentine belt,then take out bolt that goes through tensioner to engine.

I just replaced the belt on a 2000 4.2 L V6 with 8 pulleys. The serpentine belt diagram had been destroyed so I had to map out each pulley and note if it was smooth or ribbed. I found that it took two people to detension the belt and slip the smooth side under the top idler pulley. The route I found was A/C - P/S - Crank - Fan/waterpump - lower passenger side ribbed pulley - tensioner - alt - loose to a/c. Then detension the belt at the tensioner by outward and upward movement and slip the belt under the upper smooth idler below and between the alt and air/cond. Auto parts store showed the correct belt but needed year, make, model, engine size, engine type [desiel, gas, etc] and number of pulleys to get the right length.

If you're describing the idler pulley or the tensioner pulley, it's probably a bad bearing. Pulley bearing failure is common and relatively easy to repair. Remove tension from the serpentine belt then turn the pulley back and forth with your fingers. It should make no noticable noise and should turn smoothly. If you can hear any grinding noise or if the pulley feels like the bearing is grinding, replace it.

Easy. Use a 14mm socket to loosen the bolt which goes thru the tensioner pulley. This allows you to adjust the tension. The bolt which adjusts the tension has its head pointing at the ground and if you look up from under the van, just to the right of the oil filter (presuming you are facing the front of the van) you'll see that bolt head behind the tensioner pulley. Again use a 14mm socket (on an extension bar) and turn ccw to loosen and cw to tighten.

The timing belt is driven by the crank and turns the camshaft.

The serpentine belt drives the alternator, air conditioning, power steering, etc.

1. Disconnect the battery.
2. remove the serpentine belt.
3. Unbolt the pulley.

Mine isn't squeaking. Yours is because your pulleys aren't aligned or because you are using an improper belt.

30 mm. You need a normal chrome 12 pt socket instead of 6 pt impact.

In the '99 9-5, I did, you have to remove the motor mount on top, then jack up the motor to make it more accessible. The rest is like any other belt job.

Unless your vehicle has suffered some front end collision damage and had parts replaced, the belt diagram shhould either be on the underside of the hood, or somewhere on the sheet metal shroud that supports the radiator and/or front grille.

depending on the style of belt, on the alternator belt there is an adjustment just below the slider holding the alternator, you just simply tighten it until belt becomes tight.

You May Find in it a Book that you may buy at like auto parts store Or go to autozone.com or pepboys.com they may have it online Or even look under the hood of your car it should be on the sticker up the hood or near the engine some times. There are many posts and, in at least one of them, one of the contributers posted a link to a site which has a diagram. If your belt is still intact, you might just make a quick diagram of the belt routing and work from that.

Answer 1: 4 cylinder The A/C belt and the Alternator belt are the same on a 97 Caravan. Just losen the alternator bolt and it should be able to come of easy Answer 2: My 2000 Dodge Caravan 3.0 has two belts; one serpentine for the alternator and steering pump and a typical v-belt for the a/c. The serpentine is the wider belt of course and it snakes around the alternator pulley, a spring loaded tension idler, a fixed idler, a crankshaft pulley and a power steering pump. The tension idler is located nearest to the alternator and should appear as a tension idler on the serpentine belt path decal in the engine compartment or other belt diagrams that can be had on line or in a repair manual . The second idler is fixed and cannot be adjusted. The tension idler can be pulled down in an arc toward the front of the car with a 15mm wrench on the idler shaft bolt by applying pressure as if you were tightening the idler's shaft bolt until the idler's spring tension is overcome and idler will move in a forward arc thereby reducing the pressure on the serpentine belt so that the belt can be removed and/or installed. The tension idler does not require the loosening of any locking bolt as is the case with the a/c idler in the following paragraph. It might be easier to use an extension handle on the wrench in order to move the tension idler. It might also be easier to have a second person to move the tension idler,but in any case, make sure the socket or box wrench that you will be using is securely attached to the bolt. DO NOT USE A PRY BAR AS IT CAN EASILY SLIP! Turning the idler shaft bolt counterclockwise will simply be removing the idler. When the idler shaft bolt is released and is applying tension to the serpentine belt, ascertain that the belt has fit properly on each of the grooved pulleys.

The a/c belt is a V-belt that connects the crankshaft and a/c compressor pulleys and the V-belt's tension is maintained by a manually adjustable idler pulley. Unlike the serpentine belt the V-belt doesn't have a spring loaded tension idler. The idler pulley creates belt tension by the turning of an adjustment screw which moves an idler pulley shaft bracket away from the tangential line of the a/c V-belt . Before the bracket will move in response of the turning of the adjustment screw however, you must loosen the idler pulley shaft screw to allow the bracket to slide. Screw the adjustment bolt counterclockwise to allow the idler pulley to free all tension and then some to facilitate the V-belt removal and/or installation.

Once tension is removed from the belts, they can be removed. To get the serpentine belt off, the V-belt has to be removed, unless you are Houdini. The greatest physical exertion should be the movement of the tension idler and with an extension, a child could make the movement. To install the serpentine belt simply place it properly on the pulleys and idlers and release the tension idler.

To install the V-belt, reverse the above V-belt removal steps and tighten the idler pulley bracket adjustment bolt until the belt is tight but do not over tighten the belt and DON'T FORGET TO TIGHTEN THE IDLER PULLEY SHAFT SCREW when you are satisfied with the tension! Check the belt area for tools and for improper conditions before starting the engine.

GM tensioners are spring loaded to provide the correct tension on the serpentine belt. If the belt is loose, either the tensioner is bad or you're using the wrong belt.

All serpentine belts have some kind of tension relief pully or mechanism. Buy a $20. repair manual. Relieve the tension as indicated, probably with a ratchet & socket and pull off the belt. You can draw a diagram before you remove it. To slide the new belt on you have to release the tension again, then engage. When putting the belt on it helps to remember that the smooth side of the belt will meet the smooth pulleys, and the track or ridged belt side fits into the ridged pulleys.
