He noticed that workers were taking too long an too many resources to remove solder from components using copper film and that the desoldering pump was too large and cumbersome. So he came up with the design of a small pump attached to a soldering iron which had a tiny hole drilled at the tip and turned the whole thing into a gun and called it the desoldering iron. Phillips never recognized him as the inventor and was compensated with a golden pen for his effort.
