Timing and Firing Orders

If the camshaft and crankshaft are in proper time according to the marks you need to find the #1 cylinder and bring it close to top dead center (TDC). This can be done by removing the spark plugs and bumping the engine with the starter until cylinder number one pushes air out the spark plug hole. You can feel it with your finger (if you cover the hole with something it will blow it off).

Then rotate the distributor so you can insert it. The rotor should then be pointed to cylinder #1. This should be close enough to get it running so you can set the timing with a timing light. It is possible to be 180 degrees out of phase and have the motor run.

It retards the timing so the engine is easier to start. After it starts, it advances the timing back to an advanced position for best engine performance.

I am guessing that this vehicle is the Marquis and not the Grand Marquis. I'm also guessing that it's a 6 cylinder engine. If I'm wrong, go to www.autozone.com and look under repair info, specifications, firing order for your specific vehicle. FIRING ORDER 1-4-2-5-3-6

What is your ignition timing? I ran into the same problem. My 95 Corolla failed the first time when I took it for the test. Every thing was very good except the ignition timing. I took it back to my tune up mechanic and asked him why because I did a major tune up before going for the smog. My experienced mechanic looked at my car and told me that for the particular model that I have (made in Canada as opposed to the ones made in USA and/or Japan), the ignition timing can not be adjusted. He showed me the data from his computer and yes, for those that should be adjusted, it should be 10. But those have a different shape. The data the smog mechanics (who provided the data?) are getting do not take into account the differences betw diff models. He told me to should the smog tech under the car hood there is a sticker which indicates what should be adjusted and ignition timing is not there, and "No Other Adjustments Needed" is there. He told me some newer cars don't allow ignition timing adj so people won't make the wrong adj.

He told me to look at the smog inpection data when I bought it 2 yrs ago, and under the ignition timing it was N/A. So I went back to the smog tech and showed him. He believed me and my Corolla passed it. I wish whoever provided those smog data specs to the smog techs could update them. It was an unnessary trip to my tune up mechanic and back to the smog mechanic and the pollution created and what was the purpose of the smog inspection?

Looking at the engine from the front of the car, the distributor cap is to the right of the engine (or on the driver's side of the car looking from the front of the car. The spark plug wires come from each spark plug and terminate on the distributor cap. They plug in to the distributor cap.

Looking at the engine from the front of the car, the spark plugs (left to right) are identified as spark plug "A", spark plug "B", spark plug "C" and spark plug "D".

"A" wire comes from the "A" spark plug to the 4th (right most) hole on the distributor cap; "B" wire comes from the "B" spark plug to the 3rd (2nd right most) hole on the distributor cap; "C" wire comes from the "C" spark plug to the 2nd (left most) hole on the distributor cap and the "D" wire comes from the "D" spark plug to the left most hole on the distributor cap.

and pull the triger the light will flash every time #1 cyclender firers

I have a 1990 and factory setting for base timing is 10 degrees, I believe.

When the engine is in time, cylinder 1 is at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. This means that both the intake and exhaust valves for cylinder 1 are closed, and the piston is at its highest point in the cylinder, ready for the ignition of the air-fuel mixture. Proper timing ensures that the engine's valves open and close in sync with the piston's movement for optimal performance.

Most caps are marked with a #1.

If not ask a new question and include the year, make, model, and engine size.

You must turn the engine over until you get top dead center (TDC) on the #1 cylinder. Make sure its on the compression stroke. (take spark plug out and put your finger over the hole, make sure air is coming out.

Then with #1 on TDC drop the distributor in with the rotor buton pointing to the spark plug wire for the #1 cylinder. that's it!

Now it should run assuming you have the other wires in the correct firing order.

here is the correct order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 The distributor runs counter-clock wise. The cylinders are numbered 1234 front to back on the passenger side and 5678 front to back on the driver's side.

HI There is no real trick. The best way to acccomplish this is to first have the number one piston up at the top on the compression stroke.(number one piston must be at top of compression stroke) To be sure of this, pull out the spark plug in number one cylinder and take off the rocker cover. When the piston is on its way up and the intake valve is closing,it is coming up on compression stroke.(Get the piston as close to the top as possible) Now a chiltons manual will show you where on the distributer cap number one plug wire goes, put in the distributer with the rotor on it and keep dropping it in(turning the gear a little) until the rotor is pointing to the direction the manual shows is number 1 on the Cap. Set timing,Your done

the firing order is the same as Chevy 350 except opposite rotation instead of clockwise it is counter clockwise

find yourself a book, and a timing light to do it right...search a little on the web for a MK 1 fanatics web page that may have diagrams...
