1990 Toyota tercel has engine oil leak from headgasket?
the problem you might be trying to resolve could be due to an oil leak on the valve cover gasket, not due to a bad head gasket.
usually when the head gasket is burned or damaged, oil residues might be found in the cooling system, such as the water in the radiator, also you might experiment power loss and blue smoke coming out from the exhaust.

Not so. It's connected to / within the BOTTOM radiator hose on older model Tercels. I have an '88 and was hard pressed to find it on this top hose everyone is talking about. Searched the 'Net for days and came up with nothing. It's on the bottom. You will find the thermostat under the thermostat housing. Trace you top rad hose back to where it meets the engine and under that is the thermostat housing. Remove housing and VOILA!!!!
There typically isn't any timing marks at the distributor. It is possible to slightly advance or retard the ignition (spark) timing by rotating the distrubitor but as far as timing marks go, the only that you will find will be right above the camshaft sprocket and the harmonic balancer (crankshaft pully). possible one more for the oil pump or countershaft.

loosen the one or two bolts holding the alternator in place, i believe 14mm, then loosen the 12mm on the adjuster (side) and "screw" the 12mm bolt down to lower the alternator down enough and replace the belt. This is almost the same for every Toyota engine which doesnt use an automatic belt tensioner (serpentine) on the alternator.

Your question is a little vague, but here are a couple of ideas for you. The carburetor float is adjusted incorrectly. The carburetor was modified, or replaced with a modified part that doesn't meet the original carburetor specs. A test you can perform to determine if it is the carburetor causing the problem would be to drive the car for 5 miles, then stop and remove one of the spark plugs. It should be a clean leaning to a gray color. Any black sooty stuff on the plug means too much fuel coming from the carburetor.
You also need to make sure you did your part correctly. Are all of the vacuum lines connected and in the original positions? Spray some WD-40 around the carburetor while running to see if there is a vacuum leak. The engine will change rpm if there is.
Adjust the idle mixture if you haven't already. The carb shop would have set it to manufactures specifications, but may need to be adjusted to your car.

What causes the 1997 Toyota tercel engine light to come on?
The "Check engine" light or CEL, is often referred to a "Malfunction Indicator Light" or MIL. This light comes on to alert the operator that the engine is damaged or is not performing to factory set standards. If the ECU, otherwise known as "electronic control unit" or "Electronic control module (ECM)" is getting incorrect feedback from one of the many various sensors it will turn on the MIL. The sensor that is out of range may be reporting a problem, or could be the problem itself. An automotive code reader can be purchased to determine the cause of the MIL, however, frequently the code reader can only tell the technician the reason the MIL was turned on in the first place. Often the check engine code is misinterpreted as a bad sensor. A qualified technician should be consulted before attempting any repair, as incorrect diagnosis could possibly occur.

Replacing the valve cover gasket in 97 Toyota Camry?
Buy the valve cover gasket in one of local auto part stores. Don't start the car, put it on parking breaks. If you drove before wait when engine cools down. After then you will need a 10 mm wrench (it can have different size). Loose all nuts on the valve cover. After that remove the cover carefully. It's possible that you will have to disconnect and loose more stuff from the valve cover. When you open the cover you will see 4 gaskets for each spark plug place remove them also. Now you will need something to clean surface where the gaskets go. It can be special spray to degrease surface or it can be regular gas. Don't spill any liquid on the engine it can be harmful. You can use also sandpaper of minimum roughness to clean the surfaces. After that put the spark plug gaskets on it's places. If they don't stay there you have to buy special sort of glue (usually it's not a case). Then put the valve cover gasket on it's place, there are special grooves. Install the valve cover gasket extremely careful the valve cover gasket is very fragile. After you putted everything on its places start to tighten. You should do that in certain order. Start from one of the edges then middle opposite side and then the side from which you started but another edge (the same for another side). Don't tighten it comletely for one time, make couple "rounds" before you finish. After you check and connect everything remove all your stuff from the engine compartment and start the engine. Don't close the hood you need see that there is no leakage.
