What do you have to do to reset the radio from 'safe mode' on a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle if the number starts with a zero and the radio doesnt have a zero ..?

You must have the code which is either in the manual or can be obtained from the dealer with your VIN number, I believe. Other people have said it's also by the tire jack but I haven't looked there. I don't have an owner's manual so the dealer had to look it up on the computer for me.

I've had this happen twice when the battery died. It goes into the SAFE 2 mode if you try entering it and don't do it right and then you have to leave the radio on for 1 1/2 hours to have it come on to 1000 and then set it with each number one at a time and then hold down right reset until he beeps on. So, if you are discouraged as I was, the answer is to leave it on with the SAFE showing for over an hour and it probably will come on with the 1000 for setting eventually.

If you're like me, without a manual, this hasn't been easy. The dealer was helpful even though I got the car after the warranty had expired.

On my 98 Beetle I found the code in the spare tire compartment it is a 4 digit number mine was 0039 but they are all different. It is in a white sticker on the inside of the spare tire storage. Once you find your code then follow the instructions posted on this site. It worked great for me and I saved $85.00 dealer fee........ .

This also worked on my wifes 2000 Beetle. The sticker had the vin number on it and below the vin was the four digit code. Good luck.

i also have my radio on safe i think i found the code once i enter it what do i do how do i press enter

How do you change the spark plugs on a 2000 Chevy Astro?

On some engines it is easier to ge to it from the bottom.

If you are doing it without a lift, you need to remove the front wheels, then pull off at least half of the inner fender flap.If you pull the fender flap carefully, you can reinstall using the same buttons. Get some extensions for your socket wrench along with a universal or swivel drive. One other tip- To get more leverage on your socket wrench, get a piece of 1" diameter PVC pipe and put it over your wrench. (a 12" piece will do.)

Does backfiring in a decelerating motorcycle engine cause damage to the engine?

Answer

No it doesn't cause any damage your just running the bike too rich you should try to use a higher octane fuel and that should balance it out. However, there is another possibility and that is the bit of rubber "hose" connecting the carburetors and the inlet manifold / cylinder head has deteriorated. The rubber becomes hardened as it ages, and air leaks can happen. This means that the mixture of gas and oxygen that gets to the engine has too much oxygen in proportion to gasoline. The only way to fix this is to change the rubber parts. These may be easy or difficult to obtain, depending on the age and or make of the motorcycle. I read somewhere that increased oxygen makes the engine run hotter than normal, under these circumstances, when the short rubber hoses get hardened.

How do you change the spark plugs in a 2002 Toyota Highlander?

I agree with the previous answer that this a very time consuming job. It took me 2+ hours. I would correct a couple of statements in his answer. He refers to reaching around and behind an exhaust manifold while changing the plugs, but actually if you are working from above the engine (not below) you will be reaching around and behind the intake manifold (not exhaust) during this process. As he said, the front 3 are very easy - just remove the plastic cover plate and the coils are visible - remove one short bolt, pull the coil off, and using a long extension and a spark plug socket with a rubber insert you can remove the plugs and replace with new ones. The back 3 are very, very difficult. I did look from underneath the car and I don't see any way to get to them even if the exhaust manifold was removed. I do believe the best way is from the top. As the previous answer related room to manuever wrenches and your hands / fingers is very limited. I did remove a couple of minor brackets and hoses and the cruise control wire to get a little more room. Of course, as with the front, you have to remove each individual coil. Also - I belive two tools are critical. First - a small size "stubby" ratchet with a flexible head. You CAN use this type of small flexible ratchet to do the removal and install instead of all finger movement. Second - you need a number of small extensions.... in the 1" - 4" range... why??? because the rear plugs are also "deep" but there is no room to feed a single long extension down between the firewall and the engine head. So - you have to feed the spark plug socket and one short extension, and then feed in another one, and then a 3rd one if ncessary until you get enough length to connect the socket to the plug, and the top extension to the ratchet. To remove the extensions - work in reverese.. pull the "assembly" out a little, remove one short extension, pull out further, remove another, etc until you get to the spark plug socket. On the 3 rear plugs - for two of the plugs you work from "your right" side of the intake manifold, or from the driver's side. For the final plug, on the passenger side, work from your left side of the intake manifold. On both sides remove minor hoses or brackets to get a little more room - just be sure to hook them back up. How do you change the spark plugs on a 2002 tacoma V6?

Starting on the pasenger side. Remove the intake tube running from the air filter box to the throttle body and disconnect enough tubes to swing it out of the way. The sparkplugs are down below the small coils you see at the end of the sparkplug wires. with a 10mm socket remove bolt holding the coil, disconnect the plug at the top of the coil by squeezing it at the top and pulling straight off the coils. pull the coil straight up. there will be about a 6 inch tube that connects to the top of the spark plug when inserted. You will need a 5/8 sparkplug socket and about 2 feet of extensions to make it easy on yourself. insert the spark plug socket and extensions down the hole you removed the coils with the tube from and remove and replace the sparkplug. reinstall your coil onto the engine and move to the next one until you have replaced all the plugs on the passenger side. make sure you reconnect all the plugs to the coils, hoses to the intake tube and reinstall your intake tube. the drivers side is a little easier. pop the spark plug wires from their plastic holders to free enough slack to be able to pull your sparkplug wires out of the block. for the plug closest to the front of the engine you will need to remove the 10mm bolt holding the ground wires to the intake manifold to be able to free enough space for removing the plug. for the middle plug you will need to remove the 10mm bolt holding the bracket that is holding one of the throttle cables at the top of the intake manifold. for the rear plug just pop the flexible hose that runs behind the black metal bracket straight up out of its clip and push it out of the way along with any other hoses that run through this area. pull the spark plug wire from its place by pulling straight up just like with the coils. there will also be about a 6 inch tube running down to the spark plug at the bottom of these plugs. remove and replace the plugs same as before. make sure you reconnect all your hoses and wires to their previous locations. doublecheck to make sure you reconnect all the ground wires/ brackets. also you will need to use " twin ground electrode plugs" (see sticker on front of your plastic timing belt cover? to the right of the radiator hose). I used Bosch platinum/irriduim four electrode plugs and they worked great.

First EPA emissions on cars?

Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) was introduced in 1963 on most cars to counter the growing smog problem, mainly in California. Prior to PCV, crankcase overpressure -- an inevitable problem in a gas-burning engine -- was relieved by a simple "down tube," a bit of rubber or plastic that led from a fitting in a valve cover down to exit openly under the car. PCV countered the emissions of oil-soaked compression blow-by using a one-way valve fitted in a tube that fed the blow-by into the engine's intake manifold. The vaporous oil and exhaust was thus burned in the combustion chambers and exhausted more cleanly into the atmosphere.

This was followed by Air injection in the late 60's, and catalysts in 1975. Engines of the time were also detuned to reduce certain emissions. Starting in the mid-1980's, fuel injection and computer controls made it possible to regain the power that had been "lost" in the opinions of some, and cars now have more power (and get better mileage) than ever, given their size and weight. As someone who drove alot of the cars of the 60's and 70's, I can tell you, you don't know how lucky you are. They weren't that great. also if I'm not too mistaken, the switch from leaded gas could also be considered a EPA emission law.

How do you do the valve setting on a 1973 beetle?

I recommend a shop manual - they're not too expensive. A Haynes manual will work.

You will need:

A big screwdriver for the valve covers

A medium flat blade screw driver

A 13 mm wrench (or maybe a 15 - some engines may have oversized adjusters)

A pair of valve cover gaskets

A .006 feeler gauge (or a combination that gets you to .006)

A couple hours (for your first time)

1. Remove distributor cap.

2. With How_do_you_adjust_valves_on_a_1973_volkswagen_beetlein neutral, turn crankshaft with a wrench on the pulley bolt until the distributor rotor points to the scribe mark on the rim of the distributor. This is top dead center on cylinder #1.

3. Pry down the bails that hold on the valve covers, and remove the covers.

4. Look at the rocker arms on cyl. #1 - FRONT Right. An 0.006 inch feeler gauge should just fit - like a knife through butter - between the adjuster and the valve stem. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster until it is just right (on both valves) and tighten the locknut. Recheck.

5. Turn the crank 180 degrees counterclockwise.

6. Adjust the right rear valves (#2)

7. Turn the crank 180 degrees counterclockwise again.

8. Adjust the left front valves (#3)

9. Turn the crank 180 degrees counterclockwise.

10. Adjust the left rear valves (#4)

11. Reinstall the valve covers and distributor cap.

How do you test an alternator?

Start the engine, while the engine is running, remove either battery cable. It should stay running, if not, possible bad charging system. Or take it to auto zone. They check them for free

NEVER EVER disconnect a battery cable while the engine is running unless you like your computers fried.

Here's a link to the proper way to test:

http://free-auto-repair-advice.blogspot.com/2007/09/avoid-bogus-alternator-test.html

Saying again, never ever disconnect a battery or alternator with the engine running. The resultant voltage spikes can fry electronics, the alternator diodes can be overloaded and fried...bad things can happen. The don't ALWAYS happen, but why risk $1,000's of dollars in damage when there are correct ways to test your alternator.

One simple way is at night star your car, turn off all electrical accessories, turn on your high beam head lights and point your car at a wall where you can see the reflected light well. Notice how bright they are. Turn off the car. If the lights get brighter, odds are very good your alternator is bad/weak.

1970 vw Beetle fuse types?

Red (16Amp) and white (8Amp) in order from left to right R-W-W-W-R-W-W-W-W-W the fuses in a 1970 vw beetle are a "bullet" type ceramic open fuse. meaning that no glass or vaccume tube is used. although very un-efficient it is a simple cheap design using a one piece metal connector carries the current through the fuse in the open air, and going from the top to the bottom of the fuse is caps both ends of the ceramic "bullet" to get a good connection, comes in all amperage sizes and colors
