How do you replace a headlight bulb on a 1999 VW Beetle?

I have changed it yesterday. It is simple but it is hard, beleve me. I am mechanically inclined person but it took one hour to put it togetherit is very hard to take out and to place it in to alin with the locks to get it properly locked on both sides. bifore you try to do anything sprayWD40 aroud the handle which you could see at the back side of the headlightinside the hood. spray alot, because it should lubricate all the way to the bottom of the lock slider. Then next to the lever you can see small rectanglearea with little xxxx kind of. that is the lock for the lever. try to move the lever you could see the xxxx part will also move. now use one finger to push the lock xxxx part and try to move the lever towards outwards. don't forcegently back and forth, little by little. onece you reach the full open you will see the light is already come out little. this time use one hand to push slowley shake little move twist push and use the other hand in front to hold it take your time. will take some time. undo the wire connection thentake the metal clip off and pull the bulb and replace with the new onewhen puting in there are three grooves try to alin all three and push it slowly and try to lock. it took me 20 attempts to get both lockson at one time. before you install the head light move the lock and seehow it works and add wd40 along the tracks to work better. and use your comonsence to figure out how the lock works that will tell you how to push the lamp while you lock mostly it will lock only one side. so take youtime try over and over slowly and stedly.

AnswerYour best bet would be to take it in to a shop that works on vw cars, because otherwise you will have to take the whole front end off. It is a ridiculously complicated process for just changing a light. We changed one at the shop where I work and it took 5 hours with two people working on it. Answerit is really a simple task and takes one man about 15 minutes, if you look inside the engine compartment about half way up the lamp housing you will see a lever towards the rear of the housing, lift this lever all the way up, it will unlock and start to slide the lamp housing out of the fender, pull it completely out of the fender, (don't wimp out on it as it sticks), on the rear of the housing is a wiring cover housing with one lever clasps on the top side and one just to the left, remove this cover, there are two stakeon wire connection and a spring holder on the bulb replace the bulb, and wiring housing, before replacing the lamp housing in the fender be sure to use silicone LUBRICANT in the slide at the bottom of the lamp well in the fender, slide it back in, push down lever and you are done AnswerIf it's the passenger side, then read on. If not, you may want to take it to a mechanic.

The headlight is in a long, plastic tube. There is a slide release on the tube, with a square locking tab right next to it. The locking tab has cross hatches on it. You have to press down on the locking tab, while trying to slide the release toward the fender.

It's usually pretty tough to slide the release, but be patient. If you force it, you could break one or both of the tabs off. This would leave you with no way to remove the headlight.

Once you have released the catches, the entire light fixture slides out of the front of the car. You might want to have someone helping you at this point, as if you drop the headlight you could seriously damage it.

While sliding the headlight forward, detach the power line from it. Do yourself a favor, and spray the cylindrical holder with wd-40. This will make reinsertion much easier.

How do you replace a serpentine belt on a 2001 VW Beetle?

The first thing you have to do is to be able to bend your hands completely backwards and be able to reach under the car while your arm is in the top Yes it can be that bad I just finished mine. First disconect the air intake boot and vacuum line off the intake next draw a diagram of the pullys and how the belt wraps around each one of the pullys because vw doesn't give you a diagram under the hood, at least mine didn't have one. Then take an adjustable wrench (cresent) and on the tensioner there is a tab sticking straight up place wrench on this and pull back to releave belt tension but don't slipoff the tab. Remove belt (thats the easy part) I found if you have a helping hand it is much easyer for install. Put the belt around all the upper pullys first have your helper pull the tensioner back and slip the belt on the bottom pully last i mean the power steering pully the one on the bottom closest to the front of the car. reinstall hoses. Good Luck I did the same thing this person did, except that I took my digtal camera and took a few pictures of how the belt went on and over the pulleys then printed the pictures out and then you had the pictures to go by when putting on the new belt.

Will a 1973 VW Beetle muffler work on a 1974 VW Beetle?

Answer

1974 was the first year Volkswagen used Exhaust Gas Recirculation on its cars. If yours is hooked up, you will find an Official Volkswagen Piece of Pipe running between the right-hand tailpipe mount and the Official Volkswagen Air Cleaner. If either of those two items isn't there, the EGR system has been disabled, and you can put an early muffler on the car. If the pipe is there, you need to use the 1974 (expensive!!!) muffler.

Answer

A 1972/73 California spec exhaust sytem will have EGR also. In 1974 EGR went nation-wide. I doubt you are putting an originalused exhaust system on as most of them have long ago rusted into oblivion. Most people have eliminated the EGR system from their vehicles with aftermarket exhaust systems long ago, however, if you have to use the original emissions sytems (or just want to) in your area there are original type aftermarket exhaust systems with EGR still available. It is not likely you will have to use the original exhaust system w/EGR, and performance, sound, and price advantages to an aftermarket system is usually preferred.

The key is stuck in the drivers door lock of a w reg golf and wont lock or unlock the doors or come out of the lock.?

This is a tricky one. The lock on a VW Golf uses a series of wafers (small brass tumblers) which block the rotation of the cylinder unless the correct key is inserted. If your Golf is newer than 1999, it will have what's called a "sidewinder" style high security key (the cuts are milled onto the sides of the key rather than cut along the top and bottom), and works a little differently.

Either way, there are a couple of things you can try. It might be that the key, but more than likely it is a stuck wafer or something hanging up in the lock. Start by flushing the lock out as best you can with WD-40, and tap on the key with the handle of a screw driver. You can hit it fairly hard, but don't go crazy. Try to remove the key. Be careful not to pry the key out, because you might bend some of the wafers even more. If that doesn't work, the lock needs to come out. The door pannel will have to be removed and the lock removed from the inside. This is probably a job for a locksmith. Be careful not to break the key, it will be expensive to replace if it is one of the newer sidewinder keys.

How much does it cost to replace 1999 volkswagen timing belt?

Just had my timing belt changed at the dealer which included new water pump and belt. $657.00

Does a front wheel drive car need back wheel alignment?

If it is out of specification the rear, yes. If it is in specification, no. Makes sense, doesn't it!

Some cars have adjustable alignment angles in the rear, and do indeed call for a four-wheel alignment. On many cars, there are no rear adjustments, but the front wheels should be aligned with respect to the rear, what is properly called a thrust-angle alignment. Unfortunately, many shops are not careful with their terminology and use the term "four-wheel alignment" when they really mean "thrust-angle alignment." Even so, they usually correctly distinguish between cars that have alignable rear ends and those that don't, and price the job accordingly.

As to whether your car has an alignable rear end, you'll need to refer to a shop manual to find out.

How do you change spark-plugs near firewall on 2003 impala?

This is how i did it last year on my 97 Cutlass Supreme:

First you need a cursing jar, a six pack & a short piece of rubber hose that fits over the plugs. Start by properly gapping your new plugs. Remove the front top engine mounts(aka dog bones), put a bolt on one of the engine mount & attach a strap(ratchet) to it and anything in front of the car that won't move(I used the vise on my workbench). Put the parking brakes on, the car in neutral, then move the engine forward as far as it will go without damaging anything. I then remove the coolant overflow "resivore" & moved the alternator out of the way.

Bingo, 5 minutes per plugs(used the rubber hose to start the plugs by hand, it prevents crossthreading). 2 hrs later(including the front plugs) I put away the cursing jar & started the car...

Would premium gas harm your 1974 super beetle?

No. However if the car isn't pinging[1] it isn't needed.

[1] pinging (also called preignition, detonation, etc.) is when the air/fuel mix in the engine explodes before the spark plug sets it off. It often occurs under hard-strain situations, such as climbing a hill, heavy loads or fast acceleration. It sounds like someone rattling some pebbles in a coffee can. It is extremely bad for the engine and allowing it will damage the engine in short order.

How do you remove the tail light lens on a 2000 VW Beetle to replace the bulb?

Let's pretend it is the driver side rear bulb that need to be replaced:

1- In the trunck, remove the left panel covering the back of the light (it's approximately 4"x6") No tools reaquired, just pull it out.

2- There 's a black knob inside that you will need to remove, again with your bare hand.

3- Now the stupid part: looking at the rear of the car, around the light, you need to insert a tiny screwdriver between the light casing and the car body to unlock the casing. Where? looking at the casing, pretendind it's a watch there are 2 locks located at 4 o'clock and 5 o'clock. Personnally I used a plummer Plunger on the casing to pull it out a bit to see the locks.

I double checked this procedure with ma Volks dealer...

How do you replace the battery in a 2001 VW Beetle?

Changing battery for VW BeetleIt is much simplier than it looks. This is because there are a bunch of wires sitting on top of the battery. But they all fall out of the way when you locate the front clip on the battery housing. The clip is part of the plastic housing and is locted on the front top edge right in the middle. Just push it and lift the plastic housing lid.

When the lid comes up it will be one big piece and all the wiring housing will go back with the plastic top. Look inside and there the battery is. Follow standard procedures for taking off the cabels, lift it out drop new one in, reconnect cabels and snap lid back into place.

AnswerJust like any other car. Just buy a new battery and remove old batter, then install new battery. You may have to reset your radio pre-programed stations and clock. But all else will work jut fine.

It IS NOT as simple as it looks! I recently changed out my battery in my 2001 Turbo VW Beetle & now the radio is stuck on the default station 89.3 and will only turn on & off!! No changing the station, no controlling the volume! I do not have an owners manual(the car was bought used) so now my radio will not work! The only option left is to find the code or take the car to a VW dealer almost 75 miles away!! This could have all been prevented by getting a setting saver from my local auto zone...it plugs into your cigarette lighter & only cost $5. No telling what it will cost to replace the radio! Also, I have a ipod that usually played through the cig. lighter with the help of an FM tuner, it no longer works. I bought a cassette to see if it would even come on but it doesnt! I seriously recommend taking the car to a dealer to have your battery changed out or at least getting a setting saver, it will save you in the end.

Another solution is to remove the radio fuse for at least 10 seconds, then reinstall it. This will reset the radio allowing it to proceed through its normal power-loss sequence (displays "SAFE" then "1000" at power on) as described in the manual. Then enter your security code and all is well. The hardest part is finding the radio fuse. One my 2000 New Beetle it is a 25 AMP fuse in the fuse box on the drivers side where the door connects to the dash. It is fuse # 42 (or the only 25Amp fuse on the 3rd row up from the bottom.

Best thing to do is:

Buy a VW New Beetle Haynes Repair Manual, follow instructions on appropriate pages, invest in a telescoping magnet in case you drop a part. Following directions it took me little over an hour to do it myself. No problems with the radio, but as a safeguard I went hunting for the radio reset code in case the radio went into SAFE mode and froze up. I found it inside the spare tire compartment on the left side on a white sticker just below the car's VIN number stickers was a small white sticker also with VIN number and the reset code. Im no mechanic and never worked on this car before, but the directions on the web were either too simple or too complicated. Keys to getting battery out is: 1. the power steering reservoir that has to be moved after taking it's sole retaining bolt out then moving it several inches to the left (NO NEED TO REMOVE HOSES) that will make room to slide battery to left. 2. Removing Hold down clamp on bottom front of battery. Everything else is just like any other battery removal. Seriously though by the manual. It even has pictures and step by step directions.

I just changed my battery in a 2001 Beetle. Since the battery is tucked under the right fender you cannot lift straight up once you have disconnected it as outlined above. What I did is not hard and requires one adjustable wrench. First remove plastic engine cover. Remove one screw and pull up. It has two snaps that click on pins mounted on engine. (you cannot see them they are under cover). Between the cover and the battery there is a reservoir tank on a bracket. Remove bracket nut. You do not have to disconnect tank. Once the bracket is unbolted the hose will have enough play to move to the side allowing enough room to slide battery toward engine and lift straight out. Hook up new battery and reverse steps and you are good to go.

How do you rebuild a carburetor?

The kit comes with the parts that wear out and usually need replacing. You just need to buy the kit. Make sure you get the "premium" kit (if available) because it is more complete. You will need some carb cleaner, available from auto parts stores, to soak parts in. Carburetor build-up can be stubborn to remove and soaking is the best way to ensure parts are clean. Soak overnight as a minimum, but it could require a few days before coming thoroughly clean, depending on the condition of the carb. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the rebuild kit CAREFULLY.
The carburetor needs to be removed. In a well ventilated area disassemble the carburetor. Taking photos may help with reassembly. Carefully match up the new and old parts in the rebuild kit, as some kits fit several models and contain extra parts. Clean all of the old parts to reused, and reassemble the carburetor.

How do you replace the low beam bulb on 2000 VW Beetle?

This process, for both the drivers-side and passenger-side, requires patience, excellent dexterity and a fair amount of mechanical aptitude.

Try this FIRST on the passenger side, as it is "easier" to access than the driver's side.

USE EXTREME CARE, because it's EASy to break the release lever.

1. Open the hood and look at the back end of the headlight assembly, directly behind the headlight.

2. Notice the hook-shaped "release lever" AND the small textured rectangular area, immediately adjacent to the "release lever".

3. Depress the textured area, with your index finger, to "unlock" the "release lever"

4. With your finger still depressing the textured "locking tab", CAREFULLY lift (rotate) the hook-shaped "release lever". This will unlock the entire headlight assembly.

NOTE: IF YOU CAN'T do this easily...STOP before you break the release lever...it's expensive to replace.

5. If the assembly is unlocked, reach behind the assembly, with your fingers, and "pull" the assembly toward the front (as though you are trying to push it out)

6. The headlight assembly should be loose and you will see that it is now protruding from the fender about 1/4" - 1/2".

7. Grasp the headlight assembly, with your fingertips, and carefully jiggle and pull the assembly out.

8. Remove the plastic cover from the back.

9. Replace the bulb

10. Replace the plastic cover

11. CAREFULLY slide the headlight assembly back into the guide-rails.

THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED TO BE PATIENT

12. If the housing and guide-rails are dirty, clean them out with a rag moistened with window cleaner.

13. You may want to rub the guide-rails with a candle to "lubricate" them to make it easier to replace the assembly.

NOTES: a. It took me a little over 1.50 hours the first time I did this.

b. I just replaced both low-beams today and it took me about 30 minutes.

c. The drivers side requires a bit more time, only because the release lever is a little harder to get to.

AGAIN, if it seems TOO HARD to do...STOP and have your VW dealer assist.

Where is the brake light switch at on a 1996 galant?

I think this switch which is adjustable is located above the brake pedal on a braket with a locknut. May be the bump rubber on the pedal lever is broken.

What size is the brake drum nut on a 1974 super beetle?

36mm. You really should have a 3/4" drive ratchet to get this off, because they start at 220 lb-ft and get tighter as you drive. I've broken five flex-head breaker bars over the years removing this one nut.

How do you set timing on 1969 beetle vw?

All VWs have a slightly different timing setting. The official setting is 5 degrees before top dead center, but I'll tell you how to get it exactly right.

First thing you do is set the valve clearance. This WILL change your timing. Please note: the engine has to be completely cold to properly set the valves, so do this in the morning after the car has rested overnight.

Once that's done, get your timing light, dwell tach, little flathead screwdriver, feeler gauges and 10mm nutdriver. Examine your crank pulley. If it's the one the car came with from the factory, there will be a notch filed in the rim. That notch is at 5 degrees before top dead center. If you have one of the pulleys with a protractor painted on it (the cool kids call these degree wheels), the 5 you're looking for is the one to the right of the TDC mark.

Next, adjust your points to 0.016". This will get you started. You WILL be adjusting them in just a second.

Next, adjust the idle screw on the throttle arm. Turn it all the way in. Turn it all the way out, counting the number of turns. Then turn it back in halfway.

Anyway, start the car and adjust the idle speed to 1500 rpm. There is a screw on the left side of the carb body - NOT the screw on the throttle arm! Yes, that's very fast compared to modern cars, but it's correct for this car. Next, switch the tach to the dwell setting and look at what it says. It should read 50 degrees of dwell, or as close to it as you can get - try keeping it within five degrees in either direction. What "dwell" is, is the length of time the points are closed, measured in degrees of engine rotation. While the points are closed, power is going to the coil to charge it up. If the dwell is too short, there won't be enough charge and you'll get a weak spark. If it's too long, the points won't have enough "open" time and you'll get an incomplete fuel burn. If the dwell is too long you close the points gap; if it's too short you increase it. Once the dwell is right, switch back to the RPM setting and readjust to 1500 rpm.

NOW it's time to look at the timing. Point your timing light at the crank pulley and pull the trigger. If the timing is 5 degrees before top dead center, grab the throttle arm on the carb and pull back real fast. If the engine doesn't bog down before it accelerates, you're done. Since you're not done, loosen the distributor clamp and very, very slowly turn the distributor. If the mark goes the other way from what you want it to, turn it the other direction until the mark is lined up. Then pull the throttle arm. If the engine accelerates nicely, tighten the clamp and readjust the idle speed; if it doesn't accelerate nicely, turn the distributor just a hair and pull the arm, and repeat this until you get good acceleration.

Notice I keep telling you to readjust the idle. This WILL change with every adjustment you make.

Change rear turn signal new beetle?

There are round access panels more or less behind each tail light in the trunk. There is a small slot at the edge that you can insert a wide blade screwdriver to pop the panel out.

Once the panel is out, find the star shaped knob and unscrew (counterclockwise) to remove.

Now it will be possible to remove the entire tail light by using a thin flat blade. A putty knife, especially a plastic one would be good. Being careful not to damage the paint, slip the blade under the lower part of the tail light lens and pry the tail light assembly out.

Once the assembly is out, both the turn signal and stop/rear lamp sockets are exposed. The connector can be removed by pushing in a little tab on the side and pulling the connector straight out. It may not be absolutely necessary to remove the connector if the wiring is long enough, but when the connector is removed, it is easier to remove the lamp socket.

Remove the lamp socket by twisting slightly counterclockwise (only about 1/8 turn).

Remove the lamp by twisting slightly counterclockwise.

Note that the lamp base is a "bayonet" type with two pins sticking out the sides. One pin is closer to the base than the other one, so you must make sure to look inside the socket to make sure which pin goes to which side.

Assembly is reverse of above, but make sure when replacing tail light assembly to line up the upper tab of the assembly where it belongs in the hole first, then push down on bottom part of assembly to snap into place. Also pay attention to align the tabs of the round access panels when replacing.
