The 1995-2005 Chevy Cavalier was the third generation Cavalier model produced by General Motors. In 1996, the Cavalier Z24 received the new LD9 2.4 liter engine along with the Getrag F23 5-speed manual transmission.

first check fuses & stuff like that, then if in fact you do need to replace the motor you first take off the wiper arms by lifting them and prying out the locking tab, then you need to take off the cowl grille, i think theres like six Phillips screws or so, then take out the center nut holding...
  Usually, the biggest cause of a loss in compression is either worn or cracked piston rings, and the only way to restore the compression is by replacing them.   Another cause would be a damaged or stuck valve, again you'd have to replace it to remedy the problem.

The brake caliper will have to be removed as well as the brake  rotor. Then the studs can be hammered out. The new studs need to be  pushed in as far as possible, then using washers as spacers the lug  nut can be tightened up to pull the lug into place.

Chances are that the player in your vehicle is no longer working. Most CD players will show some kind of error once they fail as the lazer reading device inside fails. You can try a cleaning disc but if this does not correct the problem then look at replacing the unit.
