How to adjust the idle speed

If you have a carburetor, there is a crew on the driver side behind the throttle cable it usually has a spring on it if you turn it to the right it idles up left it idles down

If its a fuel injected motor idle is handled by the computer. There usually is a "base idle speed" around 800-1000 RPM. This normally doesn't need to be adjusted.

Have a look for carbon build up on the butterfly as well, this will influence idle too.

u can also adjust the cable there's two nuts that hold the the cable to the injection adjust one way to lower and the other way to raise

Also: check & tighten all hoses as even slightly leaking hoses raise & lower ur idle speed.

Adjust the throttle stop screw located on the side of the carb that has your throttle linkage connected to it.

Idle speed is computer controlled and is not adjustable. If the speed is incorrect check for a stuck idle speed air motor, on the throttle body, and for air flow problems.

Initial setting: Close needle valve (rotate clockwise) until just seated (DO NOT FORCE) and then open (turn counterclockwise) 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 turns. Start engine and let it warm up (about 5 minutes).

Fine tune: After engine has warmed up, slowly close needle valve until engine starts to stall for lack of fuel, then slowly open needle valve until engines starts to stall from flooding. Set the needle valve at midpoint between the two.

If the engine starts to sputter while in service, open needle valve 1/8 to 1/4 turn for a slightly richer mixture.

It mixes fuel and air in the proper proportions to be burned in an internal combustion engine.

Sounds like the fuel inlet valve is stuck shut, or the float isn't working properly.

check for vaccum leaks

Carburetor jets don't usually get worn, they get clogged. And the signs are hard starting, sputtering, and slow acceleration. A carb rebuild is usually the best solution.

Depends on the vehicle, but most of the time no.

replace your PCV first if it persists you will need to look into why you have so much pressure in the crankcase.

When you get ready to run the vacuum line from the turbo 400 trans modulator to an Edlebrock Performer 800 CFM carb, attach the vacuum line for the transmission vacuum modulator to the bottom constant vacuum source or the plug that is below the throttle plate. After that, install the vacuum advance to the port that is signaled or right above the throttle plate. Once that is completed, install the large vacuum line to the back of the carb for the power brake.

That is the idle adjustment. Turn it clockwise to increase the idle speed, counter-clockwise to lower the idle speed. You should not adjust the idle until your engine is fully warmed up, about 5 minutes of running. Adjust the idle speed to just over 1,000 RPM with the clutch in and the transmission in 1st gear. This is the most load your Bonneville will have at idle speed. You may need a bit of assistance for this, take care to hold the clutch in tightly if you lean over to adjust the idle by yourself.

Replace or change the tension on the spring on the manual control to throttle connection. Most speed problems are caused by the manual cable control cable being maladjusted and one cannot get a mower to run at a decent speed.

turn mixture screws all the way in till seated. do not overtighten back both scres out 3 and quarter turns. start at that point then fine tune with engine running

One answer would be a vacuum leak , check under the hood to see if there are any loose hoses just off of their connection point. Another thing to check is if your engine light is on and what codes you might have on it. Could be a bad sparkplug wire/multiple wires or clogged fuel system.

first remove the air cleaner assembly. That would be 2 10mm bolts on the valve cover...then tilt the assembly up and disconnect the vacuum line attached to the underside. Then there are 4 12mm nuts on all 4 corners.....you can get these very easily with a 1/4" drive set. Then label and remove all the vacuum lines, remove the fuel line and unplug the choke. If the carb has been there since 84 you might need to pry a bit

My suggestion is to install a 1983 Yamaha XT250 carburetor (Fit is super tight in the OEM intake manifold for TTR230 but it make miracles without a racing cam or big bore) with a 15 teeth front sprocket and 47 teeth rear sprocket with a racing chain guide. Make sure you remove the elbow at the top of the air box and make a big hole for better air flow. Replace the air filter for a high flow air filter and remove the exhaust silencer to cut the interior of it for complete open flow, this way you can install the external noise arrester in case of visiting a national park and avoid fines. You will be able to remove the noise arrester in case of serious racing punishment. That's how I got my 2012 TTR230 and can keep up with most Yamaha's 125 2 stroke. The racing sprockets will allow you to use the first gear and second in trails at average speed of 35MPH. Top speed can reach 90 @prox. if you weight 150 pounds or less and the sprockets helps a lot for willies. You can play with the stator timing for more HP and install bigger jets in the carburetor due to more CFM capacity with the XT250 carburetor. Get an aftermarket handle bar for more clearance with your knees if you are 5'10" or more. Buy ALL the protective gear. Boots, helmet, knee pads, full body armor, gloves and goggles. That will keep you in the sport for a while. Be safe and do one modification at a time for you to get use to the bike. Doing all at the same time could be risky if you don't have self control. The carburetor has an electric choke that is possibly shorted.

Sometimes a needle and seat will stick "closed", especially if the fuel was not drained over winter.

There can also be sediment in the tank or fuel line which prevents fuel from flowing.
