Remove the air cleaner, disconnect the wiring from the iac, throttle position senor,and the injectors ( squeeze the tabs together on the top ). Disconnect the throttle cable by open the throttle to put slack in the cable and unloop the cable and slide the cable end out of the hole. Remove the detent cable by sliding it forward off the pin, it just snaps on an off with a sliding motion. Remove vacuum lines. Disconnect the fuel lines, making sure to use a back up wrench on the throttle body fitting, and one on the line fitting. The larger pressure line may have pressure on it. Loosen with a rag covering the area a prevent spray of fuel, hang rag to dry, do not ball up a throw away as gas can be combustive on it's own that way. There are o-rings on the ends of the lines. Remove the three bolts that hold it to the manifold. You should be able to lift it off now, slowly to make sure everything is unhooked, I may have forgotten something, do not think so, but never know. Ive been running an '88 originally in a local cop car for years. Put in 1.60 exhaust valves and Ferrara stainless intakes, stock size. I've also been running the air-gap for years. I've had a 650 Holley DP, a 750 DP, and 830 Holley with annular discharge, a 625 Vac Sec Demon and a 750 Speed Demon on it over the years. I have a very accurate 4 gas analyser and am always playing. Didn't like the Demons. Horrible gas mileage on both. Hell, I took the 625 Demon off and put on an 830 Holley and the mpg went UP. I'm running the HOT Chevy hyd. roller and flat-tops so I'm nudging 10 to 1. But the high altitude here (Denver) allows you to fudge a bit. In the end, the 650 DP Holley had the best throttle response and the best mpg (over 20 on I80 at a steady cruise) The 700R4 helps. All in a '70 El Cainmo SS. 12 bolt, All Hotchkiss suspension.

You failed to mention the year but I would suspect a plugged fuel filter or a damaged catalytic converter.

Vortec motors were introduced by gm in the mid 1990's for better fuel atomization, which is when the fuel mixes with the air. With a better fuel to air mixture allows for a more efficient combustion in the cylinders = more power, better fuel economy. The actual change is in the motor heads themselves and the intake. Many people swap heads and intakes on older model chevys for an easy 20- 25hp gain.

most dipsticks have a lip and maybe even an o-ring at the bottom. usually you can grab with hands or tool like pliers, wiggle and pull out old tube. place new tube in hole. push by hand till stops then with something softer like rubber mallet or piece of wood, tap down until seated at lip.

The ignition timing is 4 degrees before top dead center. Adjust the point dwell to 30 degrees and the adjust the idle speed. then disconnect the vacuum to the vacuum advance and set the timing. Reconnect the vacuum and fine tune the carburator.

With an upgrade to electronic ignition and with running todays gas (low octane) a bump up in timing would be recomended. Try running about 6 degrees after and see how it does would not go above 12 after.

All V8 engines have the same firing order. 1,3,5,7 is the left bank, 2,4,6,8 is the right bank and the distributor rotates clockwise. 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2

First, you must take off the front grille completely. This definitely requiires some patience. Then you can access the screw that hold the headlight assembly. Remember just be patient, the grille has one screw in the middle that is very tricky.
