Air Filters and Intake Manifolds

Air filters are devices that remove solid particles such as dust, mold, and bacteria from the air. Used in building ventilation systems and engines, they contain an intake manifold that is primarily tasked to optimize the system/engine’s performance and efficiency.

Is there a correlation between adding Prestone antifreeze to vortex engines and leaking intake manifold gaskets?

I wouldn't think so. If it is a Vortec 350 engine made after 1996 it should have the hard plastic gasket with the rubber type sealing surface. If they are leaking fluid the intake is not torqued correctly to the heads.

AnswerIn the last four weeks I purchased Prestone(The label said mixes with all antifreezes)and added it to my 1999 Suburban and my 1996 GMC Jimmy. This week both vehicles are leaking under the lower intake manifold. They haven't been leaking prior to this. That was the reason for my question. AnswerI too have recently put the new Prestone anti-freeze in both my 1994 and my 1997 Suburbans. I drained both systems entirely before refilling. Just a habit I got into early on with anti-freeze. But I have yet to have a problem on either vehicle. AnswerCan you tell me how to remove the power steering pump pulley? What I am curious about is the hex head bolt in the center of the pulley. I have pulled on it to the point of fear of breaking it. Assuming it is a right hand thread.I have a puller, but I assume I must first remove the bolt. AnswerOk. The hex in the center of the power steering pulley is part of the shaft for the power steering pump. It is made that way so the internals of the pump can be disassembled. So there is not any reason to mess with it pulling that pulley off. The pulley itself is a full .002 press fit so it is going to be tighter than you think. Make sure you put a rag over the top of it and you have safety glasses on when you try to pull it. I have in the past got the puller as tight as I could get it and popped the puller in the front. Once you get that first initial "pop" it comes relatively easy.

Good luck.

Can a air filter cause the engine to lose power?

If it is dirty and clogged. almost all air cleaners cause a power loss. K & N and other brands make "highh flow" filters and these still cause a restriction, but most engines are calibrated to accept the filter restriction. if your filter is dirty, clean it or better yet, buy a new one. they are very cheap and improve performance as well as gas milage. whatever you do DONT run an engine without one!

Should one replace an engine or a head gasket in a Chevy 2500 V8 350 2wd 96 model with 220000 miles on it?

Sounds like someone has taken care of this one to last this long. But as they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" You should run a compression check on it to see how the cylinders are doing. Be sure to run a good engine cleaner through it. And give it a good going through. You just might find that it could be in better shape than you think... Why spend more money and down time if you don't have to?

Could a blown valve cover gasket cause oil to mix with coolant?

No, only a blown head gasket or cracked head will cause coolant to mix with the oil. A leaking valve cover gasket will only cause oil to leak onto the engine block externally.

How can you find out the true mileage on a vehicle?

This is from a pamphlet published by the Federal Consumer Information Center:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that consumers lose billions of dollars a year to odometer fraud. Odometer readings may be rolled back or documents can be forged. Making miles disappear helps increase the car's value to the seller, but can mean increased maintenance and repair costs to the buyer. ... you can use the 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to secure a history from either the state or a private vehicle history company. These companies have compiled data from multiple sources to help you get a better picture of the used car's past.

How do you change the air filter on a 2002 Chrysler Sebring with the 2.7 liter V6?

Unscrew the large air hose from the air filter housing at both ends using a screw driver. It is tight, and you may have to disconnect the electrical wires above it for room. Once the large hose is loose, pull it away from the housing, and pull the round tube style air filter straight out. Replace and make sure all connections are reconnected.

Why does performance air filter make car so loud when driving?

Auto manufacturers often times put baffles or mufflers in the OEM air cleaner and they are quite restrictive as well , that that makes them pretty quiet , aftermarket air cleaners emliminate such muffling devices and greatly increase the air flow volume and velocity and that is what causes the aftermarket air cleaner (refered to as a cold air intake or CAI) to make more noise , there is usually a noted whistle , this caused by the air passing over or past irregular shaped things in the intake or throttle body as well as air passing through the idle air control valve and throttle plates at idle and part throttle (it's more noticeable at part throttle because of the small opening that the air passes through just like when you have your window cracked and the air passing it sometimes makes a whistleing sound)

Where is the air filter on a 1999 ES 300 Lexus?

Assuming you want to check or replace the air filter... There is a big black plastic box on the driver (left) side of the engine. It has 2 spring clips on the end nearest the left fender. It also has a hose about 3" diameter that has screw clamps holding it in place. Pop open the spring clips, and loosen the hose clamp screw (the one closest to the filter box) and you can lift the lid on the box to expose the filter inside.
