Antifreeze and Engine Coolant

All internal combustion engines generate heat. To regulate the temperature of the engine, an engine cooling system, usually a water-cooled system, removes the heat. Antifreeze liquid solutions are added to prevent ice build-up in these systems at cooler temperatures.

Why is the engine still overheating after you have replaced the water pump radiator and thermostat?

Have flushed complete cooling system replaced water pump radiator thermostat clutch fan added 2gal straight anti freeze then filled to capacity with water and truck is still over heating. What else could possibly be wrong

Why does a car need a overflow jug for the radiator?

In a radiator, the fluids get really hot, when things get hot they expand and then they have to go somewhere, the fluid goes into an overflow.

How much antifreeze does a 2002 Grand Am GT Hold?

If it is a four cylinder car, it will need between four and five quarts of oil. It is recommended to put four quarts of oil in the car and then check the oil level before adding more.

How much radiator fluid do I put in a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Laredo?

Drain and flush the system. Pour in one gallon of pure antifreeze, and then top it off with distilled water. This will provide protection to around -25 Degrees F. If adding fluid to an engine with low coolant, look for the stem sticking up in the inside of the coolant overflow reservoir and add enough 50/50 mix to reach the top of the stem.

How much coolant will a 96 Tacoma hold?

A 1996 Toyota Tacoma typically holds about 2.5 to 3.5 gallons (approximately 10 to 14 liters) of coolant, depending on the engine configuration. It's important to check the owner's manual for the specific engine type, as the capacity may vary slightly. Always ensure to use the recommended coolant type for optimal performance.

How do you diagnose an overheating problem on a 93 grand am quad 4 we have relaced the radiator and the thermostat?

If you replaced the thermostat and radiator, the next step after this would be to replace your water pump, radiator pressure cap, check condition of ALL radiator lines and hoses, and replace as necessary. A hose should be replaced if it feels really soft, or if it starting to crack due to the aging rubber they are made of. Once you replace the parts described above have a certified mechanic run a pressure test on your vehicle's colling system. If you still overheat you might have an oil problem. Oil dissipates MOST engine heat but not well enough to do the whole job, which is the reason cars need cooling systems. Once your cooling system checks out see what a mechanic will tell you and I believe the most likely cause would be an oil problem. If oil is not getting to the cylinders properly the engine can overheat really fast and could possibly seize so be careful! Also note you may want to replace the timing belt as well if your car is at least 60,000 miles, or you have never replaced because on most cars the water pump is right near the timing belt. Replacing water pumps is extensive work in labor terms, so you may want to replace the timing belt because if you replace the pump and the timing belt on separate occasions, you'll have to pay the labor both times unless you have the know how to do it yourself.

How many gallons of a 80 percent solution must be mixed with 60 gallons of a 30 percent antifreeze solution to get a mixture that is 70 percent antifreeze?

like 200. Cause 60gls-30%+60gls-80%=120gls-110/2%=120gls-55% then 120gls-55%+120gls-80%=240gls-135/2%=240gls-67.5% out 240gls was 60gls-30%= 240-60=180gls-80%. 180gls-80%+60gls-30%=240gls-67.5%

Can a gauge to the instrument cluster go bad?

yes it is possible for a gauge to go bad in which you will need to have the cluster repaired or buy a new one

What does engine coolant temp switch do?

The engine coolant temperature sensor or ECT is a sensor on the engine which tells the ECM (engine control module) what the temperature the engine is. Modern engines are fuel injected so they dont have a choke. So they need the engine temperature to set the length of the pulse width (amount of time in milliseconds that the injectors spray fuel) at the injectors.

If the ECT goes bad (open circuit) the computer will think that it is 40 degrees below zero outside all of the time and the car will run very rich. If,on the other hand, the ECT shorts out, then the computer will think it is 384 degrees above zero and the car will run very lean.

The ECT is quite an important sensor on an engine. It is a thermistor. Which means that it changes resistance depending on the temperature.

In summary...the ECT tells the computer what the temperature of the engine is so the computer knows how rich or lean to set the injectors to compensate.

Of course the O2 sensor helps also but, that is another answer altogether.

Do you dilute coolant?

Yes, coolant is typically diluted with water before use, as most antifreeze products are concentrated. The recommended dilution ratio usually ranges from 50:50 to 70:30 coolant to water, depending on the manufacturer's specifications and the climate conditions. Diluting coolant helps ensure optimal performance, including freezing and boiling point protection, as well as corrosion prevention. Always check the guidelines for the specific coolant being used.

What happens if you put 5 gals of diesel into a gas tank with only a quarter of a tank?

Sounds like you'll soon find out! Obvisously you should not run diesel fuel in your car. Diesel fuel is a light oil, and will mix with the gas to form an even lighter oil. The relatively low compression in a gasoline engine will likely not be enough to create combustion, and will run very poorly if at all. The car's engine controller will attempt to correct the air/fuel mix, and lead to more trouble, even after you fix the gas. The catalytic converter may also get fouled. Before you attempt to drive the car and get this bad fuel all through your line, drain the gas tank out at the fuel filter into gasoline containers and properly dispose of this. Have the car towed to a mechanic if you cannot safely drain the gas yourself. Do not just let the fuel pour out on your driveway or into your yard. This will create a VERY UNSAFE situation, not to mention ruining your yard. Do not attempt to use the collected diesel/gas mix in a diesel vehicle. After you get as much out as you can, fill the car's tank with regular gasoline and you should be OK. A very little bit of diesel (less than a quart) in a large quantity of gas will affect performance, but still run without ruining your car. If you are a real stickler, you should flush the tank with some gas to get all the diesel out. Did you not notice the green handle and high price at the pump? Good luck. <><><> For more information please see the answer to the Related Question shown below.

How do you recharge the AC in a 1996 Achieva?

Hey C==You really need gauges to be sure you don't overcharge the system. The low preasure outlet is by the accumulator. You charge it through this port. GoodluckJOe

Why is the Low coolant light on in 96 grand Cherokee?

The light is on because the coolant level is low. The sensor is located inside the reservoir tank on the passenger side near the firewall. Fill the reservoir tank to the appropriate level ("HOT" or "COLD") with the proper 50/50 antifreeze mix. This should shut off the light. It may come on again after a short period of operation and cool down cycle if the level insided the engine is severely low.

I own the same vehicle and I always have a warning that my coolant sensor is bad. The following is not MY answer, it is something that I read while trying to figure out why my Jeep does all the quirky things that it does.

The VIC (vehicle information center) has some issues with the solder connections between the display board, and the CPU board. They have a flexible connector between the boards, that is "wave soldered" at the factory. Due to some quality issues, units from 1996-1998 have some connections that didn't receive the full amount of solder required for reliable connection. Pin 14, which connects to a pink wire on the electrical harness is the culprit. Once that connection is secured, the false "Coolant Sensor Failure" will go away. That sounds very technical, but if you have even the most rudimentary soldering skills, you can fix it with a 30 minute investment of time, for free. Google "removing the VIC" for more detailed information about what panels must come off to get the unit out- it's a bit involved, as it requires removal of the dash storage compartment door. I won't cover that here... Once the unit is out, unscrew the 6 Torx screws holding the unit together. Once the screws are out, the unit can be split in half like a clamshell. In between the two circuit boards are a ribbon cable, with fairly stiff wires in it. The problem lies in the solder connections of the riibbon cable, to the boards. Under a magnifying glass, you may be able to see one or more "cold solder" joint connections. These look like a little silver mountain, but some may be missing some solder, or be a very dull color- not the bright shiney connection of it's neighbors. I chose to heat all of the connections one at a time, and add a tiny bit more solder to each. Once putting the unit back together, and re-installing, I haven't had any further issues. The only other alternative is to either ignore the message center, or purchase a VIC from some place like E-Bay, or a junkyard.
