Brake Pads and Rotors

The brake pads and rotors are important parts of a vehicle’s braking system. When an automobile brakes, the brake clamps on the rotor to slow the speed of the vehicle.

Why disc brake is better than drum brake?

because disc brakes provide more uniform torque throughout than drum brakes during braking..

How do you remove the front brake calipers on a 2002 Ford Expediton?

Replacing Disc Brake Pads *** Caution *** Older brake pads or shoes may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaner fluid. Print 1. To avoid overflowing of the master cylinder when the caliper pistons are pressed into the caliper cylinder bores, siphon or dip some brake fluid out of the large reservoir. 2. Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. 3. Remove the wheels. 4. Place a suitable C-clamp on the caliper and, with the clamp bearing on the outer pad, tighten the clamp to bottom the caliper pistons in the cylinder bores. Remove the C-clamp. 5. Loosen and remove the caliper retaining bolts. 6. Lift the caliper off the rotor. è Do not allow the caliper to hand by the brake hose. 7. Remove the brake pads and anti-rattle spring. To install: 8. Thoroughly clean the areas of the caliper and spindle assembly which contacts each other during the sliding action of the caliper. 9. Place a new anti-rattle clip on the lower end of the inboard shoe. Make sure that the tabs on the clip are positioned correctly and the loop-type spring is away from the rotor. 10. Place the lower end of the inner brake pad in the spindle assembly pad abutment, against the anti-rattle clip, and slide the upper end of the pad into position. Be sure that the clip is still in position. 11. Check and make sure that the caliper piston is fully bottomed in the cylinder bore. Use a large C-clamp to bottom the piston, if necessary. 12. Position the outer brake pad on the caliper, and press the pad tabs into place with your fingers. If the pad cannot be pressed into place by hand, use a C-clamp. Be careful not to damage the lining with the clamp. Bend the tabs to prevent rattling. 13. Position the caliper on the spindle assembly. Lightly lubricate the caliper sliding pins with suitable grease. 14. Position the caliper pins into the caliper anchor plate. 15. Tighten the caliper pins to 16-30 ft.lbs. [22-40Nm] on 1997-98 F-250HD, F350 and F-Super Duty models. Tighten the caliper pins to 21-26 ft.lbs. [28-36 Nm] on the F-150, F-250, Expedition and Navigator. Tighten the caliper pins to 42 ft.lbs. [56 Nm] on the 1999-00 F-250SD, F-350 and F-Super Duty models. 16. Install the wheels. 17. Lower the vehicle. 18. Pump the brake pedal a few times to build adequate pressure in the brake system and check the fluid level in the master cylinder.

How do you change the brakes on a Honda element?

i

Another answer, I changed all of the pads( front and rear) on my Element in about an hour. Obtained pads from Kragen auto parts store (about 70.00us) used floor jack and air gun. Simply unbolt wheels, caliper pins, slide out old pads, slide in new ones. I have been rebuilding brakes for 50 years, not all that hard.

Why does it sound like leaking air when you apply your brakes and the more pressure applied causes the car to stall?

This sounds like vacuum leak in the braking system. Check for disconnected or cracked hose from the engine to the brake booster in the engine compartment.

How do you remove a front brake rotor that won't come off?

If its the nut that's giving trouble, a cetiline torch, heating it red, and jumpin' the mother out of the Heafty wratchet with a pipe on the of the wratchet for torke.

If the nut is off and the roter is stuck, get a 10 pound mall and wack it a few times to get the rust off. Don't dent the heck out of it, just wack it. It should come off.

How hard is it to replace front brake pads on 1997 Dodge Caravan?

A big plus of disc brakes is how easy they are to work on. Replacing pads is about twice the effort of changing a tire with only slightly more opportunity to mess things up. Never having worked on '97 Caravan doesn't intimidate me in the least because this is an fix that's extremely universal.

Jack the vehicle up and for safeties sake lower onto jack stands.

Remove the wheel.

For cars with ABS, open (turn counter clockwise) then close (turn clockwise) the caliper's bleeder valve.

Remove the caliper bolts - some vehicles have Alan heads, some torx but all to my knowledge have the heads inboard.

Slide the caliper off the rotor - here's a place bad things can happen. If you're working on a heap there's a good chance the flex line is going to break while you let it support the weight of the caliper. If it does, thank your lucky stars because it's a lot better happening while the car's not moving rather than when you really need to stop.

Remove the outboard pad.

If the vehicle has ABS, place a snug fitting piece of tubing on caliper's bleeder valve, stick the other end into container that will soon have brake fluid in it and open the bleeder valve. If you don't have ABS don't do this because air can be introduced into the system and these are hydralic brakes not neumatic.Place a C-clamp on the caliper and inboard pad and compress the slave cylinder, this presses the brake fluid out of the cylinder.ABS owners - close the bleeder, non-ABS owners - check to see if any brake fluid squirted out of the master cylinder and clean it up.

Remove the inboard pad.

Replace pads with new.

Put caliper back into original position.

Replace caliper bolts.

Replace wheel.

Lower vehicle off of jack stands.

PUMP DOWN THE BRAKES

This can be done by any child who can reach the brake pedal with their foot. Sit in the drivers seat and slowly press the brake pedal as far down as it will go and release several times until it no longer goes to the floor. If after 8 to 10 pumps the pedal still goes to the floor, clean up the brake fluid you squirted over God's half acre, find the opening in the system and deal with it. If the pedal "firms up", start the engine and repeat.

Put the vehicle in gear assuming you have no brakes. Be ready to throw the shifter into neutral. You will be pleasantly suprised by how well the brakes work.

It's taken me longer to write this than changing pads takes - don't be afraid but please be careful. There are few things as exciting as realizing you've forgotten to pump down the brakes when you're twenty feet from a steep hill that leads to a deep lake and you're headed in the wrong direction.

It's a good idea to leave the keys inside the house with a tag attached saying "Did you pump down the brakes?".

How do you remove front rotors on 2004 Toyota solara?

You're going to have one of those "Doh!" moments here...

1. Remove the tire/wheel combo

2. Remove the caliper (2 bolts) and suspend it from the spring with a piece of wire so it isn't dangling from the brake hose. If a brake pad falls out just put it back in unless you're replacing them at the same time as a rotor (good idea).

3. Pull the rotor toward you. It just slides off the wheel studs.

Done! See? Doh! ;)

If you're replacing pads at the same time, press the brake piston back into the caliper using a C-clamp and the old brake pad. If you don't have a C-clamp large enough try using your thumbs. Remember you're pushing brake fluid back up into the reservoir so keep an eye on it. If it's been refilled since the old pads were installed there's a chance it'll overflow. Brake fluid is one of the best paint removers ever created.

Cheers

How do you change the rear disc brakes on a 1996 Chevy Camaro V6?

be sure to purcahse the tool to "screw" the caliper piston in. If you try to push the piston in on rear disc brakes you will damange the caliper.

What tools do you need to take calipers off a 1978 gmc c15?

You will need a jack to lift the truck, and jack stands to support the truck while it is being worked on. A lug wrench to remove the wheel. A 3/8" hex key wrench, or a 3/8" hex key socket. A pry to back the pads off a little for easier removal. If removing totally from the truck a wrench to remove the banjo bolt to disconnect the brake hose which has a copper washer gaskets on each side. If just replacing pads do not remove hoes, you will need a 8" c clamp to compress the caliper piston, using the old pad as a backer for the c clamp. You may have to remove some brake fluid from the reservoir as it will fill as you compress the piston. Once both calipers are re padded and mounted on truck push brake pedal two or three times to readjust calipers. Check and refill brake fluid level.

What does it mean when my dealership tells me my 2008 Jeep Wrangler needs new rear brake rotors and pads at 30000 miles even though I hear no screeching or grinding?

More information: I went in because I was having electrical issues which they could not fix but insisted my front brakes are at 20% and rear brakes are at 0%.

How do you replace rear brake rotors on 2006 Toyota Sienna?

Written for both front and rear.

Before you start, if this is the first time the rotors have been removed I recommend purchasing new rotors.

You'll need a 15mm open end wrench, 14mm ratcheting wrench or shallow socket, 16mm deep socket, a skinny fairly long flat-head screw driver, wire brush, large hammer (maybe).

1. Break the lug nuts loose.

2. Jack vehicle and remove lugs. Support van with jack stands!

3. Remove caliper. You'll need the 14mm and maybe the 15mm to hold the inside nut.

4. Once removed, secure with tie wrap or piece of wire, coat hanger, so that the caliper isn't hanging by hose.

5. Remove caliper mount bracket. 16mm. These babies are tight. You may need a small pipe to slide over the end of your ratchet for leverage. I use the boxed end of a 7/8" wrench.

6. For rear rotors, spin rotor until the small rubber plug is at the 6 o'clock position. Remove plug. At this position the tensioner for the parking brake can be accessed. Take the flat head and spin the tensioner, one tooth at a time to release tension. You'll know pretty quickly if you are going the wrong direction. (Lefty loosey)

7. The rotor should slide off at this point. I live in the north and mine were corroded to the hub. If this is the case for you, grab a big hammer. Seriously. You have to beat the rotors off. I recommend 3-5 hits, then rotate and repeat. This is why I recommend purchasing replacement rotors just in case.

8. Once removed, take a wire brush to the hub and clean the area with brake cleaner.

9. I recommend applying a very thin film of high temp anti-seize to the hub, especially if you think you'll be the one to replace them in the future.

10. Install new rotor. If on the rear, make sure the hole in the rotor lines up with the access hole in the hub for the parking brake adjustment.

11. Install caliper mount. 16mm bolts. Inspect the lock washer. If it's bad (i.e. completely flat), replace.

12. Spray rotors down with brake cleaner to remove shipping oil (oily film).

13. Compress the caliper. If you've recently added brake fluid, or are changing all pads on the van, remove the cap on the fluid reservoir (as you compress the fluid pushes back into the reservoir). Use a 3-4"' C clamp or there's actually a tool for this. Reinstall reservoir cap.

14. Install pads into caliper mount. (before you install caliper)

15. Slide caliper over the pads. You'll need to push the back nut in, by hand(it's spring loaded) to fully install the caliper. Using your 15mm open-end, install the 14mm bolts.

16. Double check the 4 bolts you've installed.

17. Reinstall the tire. Snug lug nuts. Spin the tire while you have the van elevated to make sure you do not have any abnormal grinding/rubbing.

18. Lower van and torque lugs. Actual torque value is in the owners manual.

Put on 2 band-aids and repeat on the other side.

How do you change front rotor brake on 93 Acura Vigor?

how to replace/install front brake rotors on an Acura Vigor:

*** it's been a while and this is how to do it to the best of my memory. I assume no responsibility for any incorrect information or accidents that may occur as a result of reading this. This information is for educational purposes only.

ALWAYS WORK SAFE IN EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!!

1) remove centre wheel cap and loosen wheel nuts

2) loosen the axle nut

3) loosen the 4 recessed bolts that hold the hub to the rotor (don't strip the heads!!! maybe use a bit of Penetrant and heat first before loosening)

4) jack up car and place jack stands underneath car

5) remove the wheel, then remove the axle nut

6) unbolt the ABS sensor and place out of the way

7) unbolt brake caliper and hang from the strut spring with a piece of wire. Also remove the bracket from the knuckle

NOTE: This is a good time to inspect and clean up the caliper and bracket, you don't want to ruin your new pads and rotors because of a sticky pin or piston. If you see any abnormalties on your old pads like uneven wear, you may have a caliper problem and may have to replace them. Otherwise, I recommend taking the caliper boots, clips and pins out and degreasing everything and regreasing with caliper grease. Sand all the clips and seating areas that the clips sit in with fine sandpaper until surfaces are clean. Make sure the boots, pins and clips are useable and be sure the pins move freely. Replace any worn parts.

8) separate tie rod end ball joint from knuckle

9) tap axle spindle inward with a rubber hammer

10) swing (pivot) knuckle so the axle comes out (keep axle supported)

11) remove the 4 bolts from the back of the steering knuckle using a 12 point socket

12) use 4 long bolts (5-6 inches long )with the same thread as the 4 bolts you just removed (I believe they are M10 x 1.5 threads).

NOTE: The 4 long bolts must be threaded all the way or most of the way up the bolt. I could not find these so I went to a specialty fastener store (Brafasco) and bought a 3 foot piece of threaded rod which I cut into 6 inch pieces with an angle grinder. I bought 8 nuts as well and threaded 2 nuts on each piece of rod and tightened them against each other to lock them in place so I could use a socket on the top nut without it moving.

13) rotate the rotor slightly so the threaded rod will push against a flat spot on the rotor when you tighten it. Do this for all 4 threaded rods and then take turns tightening each threaded rod a little at a time until the hub/rotor separates and falls off (catch it!). now unbolt the hub from the rotor

14) replace the 4 original bolts back into the knuckle

15) bolt the hub to the new rotor

16) reinsert the axle spindle through the hub

17) tighten the axle nut to push the hub/rotor into position.

18) reassemble everything and torque everything to proper spec

19) do a Google on "brake bedding" and learn the proper way to break-in your new rotors and pads - really, check it out!!!

20) DON'T USE CHEAP OR BUDGET ROTORS/PADS. You saved yourself a load of money

so use good parts

I hope I have not forgotten anything???? Good Luck, it's really not that difficult unless you have to replace the bearing as well.

Why is brake bleeding required for braking repair?

You have to bleed the brake lines because if there is any air in the lines the brakes will fail. If there is any air in the brake line, when you step on the peddle the air will compress and not transfer the energy to the brake caliper or drum and not stop the car.

Do you need to lathe new rotors with new pads?

I believe most mechanics recommend turning the rotors anytime the brake pads are replaced. Otherwise, any gouges or flaws in the rotor will reduce brake pad life significantly.

How do you replace the front rotors on a Saturn lw200?

What will make the front wheels wobble when you apply the brakes?

Worn tie rod ends. Jack up the front of your vehicle and see if your front tires have some play horizontally. If they wobble horizontally then its likely tie rod ends and if they wobble vertically its your ball joints. Apparently it can be quite dangerous to drive like that. I have to replace mine in the morning.
