Car Electronics and Lights

Gauges, speakers, signal lights, headlamps and cabin lamps are all parts of a car’s electronic equipment. The majority of cars use a 12-volt power source, and include a fuse for protection from power surge.

Where is the IAT sensor at?

The IAT sensor measures the temperature of the intake nmanifold. The ECM uses this sensor reading to set injection timing and adjust the air-fuel ratio. If the fuel mileage and power output of you engine seem low, some owners have found improvement in EGT, fuel economy, and power after cleaning carbon from the IAT sensor in at the rear of the intage manifold. Engine with exhaust brakes are particularly prone to IAT sensor fouling because soot is blown back into the intake during valve overlap.

The only tool you need is a 3/8" ratchet with a 6" extension and 13/16" socket. View of IAT from above battery Closer view of the IAT sensor The IAT sensor is found on the driver's side of the engine, almost at the back of the intake manifold. Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor. You will need to spread the connect tab away from the sensor body to unplug the sensor. After the connector has been removed, use a 13/16" deep well socket, 6" extension, and ratchet to unscrew the sensor from the manifold. Photo of a dirty IAT sensor The sensor on the left had 20,000 miles on it, and it was covered with soot. After a shot of carburator cleaner, you can see the sensor element inside the cage. Screw the clean IAT sensor back into the manifold, torque it to 10 ft-lb, and reattach the connector. Photo of a clean IAT sensor

Normal IAT Sensor resistance values:

Temperature Resistance 30 40K 32 30k to 36k ohms 76 13K ohms 77 9k to 11k ohms 81 6.87K ohms 122 3k to 4k ohms 130 4K ohms 167 600 to 675 ohms 212 600 to 675 ohms

Replacement Sensor:

Cummins PN 3408345, around $28.

Dodge PN 05014197AA Sensor, Temperature (SEN, TEM), around $18.

The needle on the dash over-heat indicator is pinning the speedometer needle in my 2005 Cavaliere. Why would this happen?

Overheat Indication

You've answered your own question. If the "overheat indicator" is indicating overheating, then the engine and the coolant is OVERHEATED!!!!!!

Overheating is a serious situation and any indication of such requires that a qualified automotive technician check the vehicle and determine the cause for the overheating, and correct it to prevent permanent, and possibly very expensive, damage to the engine.

Or, another remote possibility is that the engine/coolant temperature sensing/indicating system has become defective.

Do storm doors prevent coldness from entering a room For example if you open the interior wooden door will the room stay as warm as when the interior wooden door was closed?

If a quality storm door with insulated glass in properly installed it can provide pretty good insulating properties.

As a general rue storm doors don't have the same energy efficiency as a good exterior door even if it as some insulation inside it.

Of course it matters how well your exterior door keeps out the cold.

Why does a Moped flywheel Turn?

What are the symptoms of a bad distributor?

For OLDER distributors, the kind that uses points.

There aren't many moving parts on a distributor, just the center shaft, the centrifugal advance mechanism and the advance plate.

  • If the advance plate is worn and not moving properly, the engine will have problems with vacuum advance and will "ping" a lot more when you step on the accelerator.
  • If the centrifugal advance isn't working properly you'll either have a "kickback" when you try to start the engine, indicating that the advance weights are stuck "out", or if the weights are rusted in the IN position, you'll have a power loss.
  • If the central shaft is worn it will affect the way the points open and possibly allow oil to leak into the distributor. If the points aren't opening properly it may cause the engine to completely fail, misfire or run erratically. If it's leaking oil onto the points it may not run at all.

Beyond that, you can replace vacuum advance diaphragm, points, rotor, distributor cap and condenser, all components of the distributor.

For Newer Distributors:

NEWER distributors are mostly electronic and everything is different.

The center shaft can still wear but again, that will usually mean that the engine will run poorly if at all. Personally, I haven't seen that before.

Beyond that, some of the electronic components inside the distributor can still fail but they can be replaced.

What are the safety regulation of an electrical installation?

What is the amp rating for fusible link 10awg?

12awg will handle about 20 amps, so 10awg should handle 25-30 amps. Keep in mind that length plays a role in wire size selection. In house wiring, a wire run of 50 ft will work for 15 amps at 14awg, but increase the length to 100ft and you should use 12awg to carry 15 amps correctly.

What causes dashboard lights to flicker?

AnswerUsually a bad connection either in the ground (more likely) or the hot leg. I have seen a lose fuse cause this as well, but it depends on how old your car is and if it uses the newer blade fuses or the older glass cartridge type.

i have the same problem i found out what it is by the brake and gas pedals.. where the code reader goes underneath the a black box. I think it is a power converter. I unpluged it and the dome light went out, but no more flicker.

What happened to Rockford fosgate home page?

I'm not really sure. As far as I can tell, it's been down since the 30th. Does anyone else have any idea? I'll try and call the corporate office. 800 Directory assistance lists the number for the corporate office is 866.258.4755. I called it, but the automated attendant on the voicemail system gave no indication that the number I was calling was indeed Rockford Fosgate. I chose the dial by name directory instead of leaving a message in the general voicemail box and left a message for an Eric Smith. I simply asked if this was the number for Rockford Fosgate and left two contact numbers. I will repost if I get a response but, in the meantime, if somebody else has come up with the answer, please let us know.

Negative 12 volt wire?

A negative 12 volt wire typically refers to a wire that carries a direct current voltage of -12 volts. It is commonly used in electronic circuits and power supplies where negative voltage is required as a reference point or for specific functions. Make sure to follow proper safety precautions when working with negative voltage to avoid electrical hazards.

Why Wipers don't work on high?

Several possibilities are that:

1 the switch is bad on the high position.

2. There is a problem with the high speed wire from the switch to the motor.

3. The wiring inside of the wiper motor for the high speed is bad.

The way 2 speed wiper motors work is there are separate windings inside the motor for low and high speeds. Usually 2 wires come out of the motor for low and high and the common ground through the wiper motor body to the chassis of the vehicle. You apply 12v to one wire and get low and 12v to the other one for high speed.

Why when you apply the brakes with the headlights on would the brake lights go out on a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

I had this same issue on a 2000 model. After checking voltages at the rear lamps with no differences between the two sides, I then swapped the two brake light asseblies. The right side was not working when the lights were on and the brakes were applied, it still did not work when plugged into the left side, but my left side still worked when plugged into the right side. So, that left only the brake light assembly to be faulty. I ordered one off of Ebay, and replaced it with no other problems, except the left went out a few months later!! Try swapping the two asseblies and see if you get the same results.
