Car Shaking Problems

Engines will often "misfire" for a while when they're extremely cold. Misfire means that one or more cylinders aren't firing when the other cylinders are running. When that happens it feels like the engine is shaking.

There are many reasons why an engine might not run well when cold, anywhere from needing a tune-up to burned valves or even injector problems.

If it's been a while since the engine has been tuned up, try that first, but have the shop run a compression test while they're replacing the plugs.

You should have someone pull off the hubs and check your bearings to see if they need to be replaced or just repacked

Pop the hood, and look at the engine. In the middle of the engine, there will be a row of black plugs connected to wires. Pull them out (there are tabs on the side you have to press in), and the spark plugs will be under them, inside the engine. You'll need either a magnetic or rubber coated socket to get them out since their in there so deep.

When you are moving at higher speeds, it could need alignment (if it pulls one way) the wheels may need to be balanced, air accordingly to the tire needs. If it is stopped.. timing?

I had a 1987 Pontiac Firebird that would sputter for a few seconds when you pressed on the gas pedal. Never got it checked though but I assume that would be the problem.

Warpped rotor. rotors are warped have them checked and turned or replaced. they should be turned after every brake change

The primary purpose of struts and shocks is to "dampen" the unsprung weight of the wheel assembly to prevent bounce. In other words, shocks and struts stop the wheels from bouncing when you hit a bump.

Without shocks or struts, a wheel would bounce like a basketball when you hit a bump, and the wheel wouldn't be in contact with the road very much of the time. That makes the vehicle unstable and difficult to control especially when you're going much over 15 MPH.

As opposed to shocks, struts also include suspension springs and bushings, so it depends on which part of a strut is going bad. If the springs are getting weak and the vehicle is "sagging", that's probably not too terribly unsafe, just an annoyance. If the bushings are shot, don't drive it.

In my opinion, it's not a good idea to drive without good struts, but that has to be your decision.

Your front brake rotors are warped. Have them turned or replace them along with the brake pads. This is caused by too much hard braking making the rotors get too hot and being warped by the excessive heat.

also see if your out of alignment (drive on a straight road no handed) your camber might be out.

it could also be a bushing on our power steering control arm, you can find it by tracing the black bar that leads from your wheel housing to behind your engine, just jiggle the bar a bit an if it moves and makes a metal on metal noise then that's most likely what it is. its a twenty dollar part and it is simple to fix and very very common.

your upper tie rod bushings could be worn out in which case they are fairly easy to replace.

have u had the check engine light checked for the code? if not take it to auto-zone parts house and they check it free. also check for a vacuum leak

Bent rim. If you rotate it to the rear it may eliminate problem.

Have the wheels inspected and replace a bent one. Putting it on the rear will cause your rear axle bearings to wear out. Do not mount a bent wheel on your car, replace it.

There is such thing as "Tire Hop" if you are accelerating real hard in a high performance vehicle. If not, need more detailed info. Describe year make model and how and when it does it.

Mines was doing the same thing and the solution was to replace the front U-joint. Its fine now.

Having a bad rod bearing could cause a truck to make a loud knocking noise and shake when driving at high speeds. The engine having a coolant leak or an engine timing problem could also cause the knocking noise.

Miss or vacuum leak.

The balance would be the first think. but if ur tires is old or it was flat for a while there will be a little bump on the side that will make its vibrate. do a balance first. if the problem will not be solved then change ur wheels put front on the back and rear in front but dont drive it if the steering wheel will shake. change it back

engnine misfires...tune-up time...read up basic diagnosis in a manual.. everyone should have a manual for their vehicle, and the library should have a professional shop manual available in the REFERENCE section...make copies of the right sections...good luck :)

They need to be balanced. This is done by placing them on a machine which spins the wheels and determines where and how much weight to put along the rim. The weights are either clamped along the rim or there are self-adhesive weights that can be stuck to the inside on custom rims.
