Unplug the posative terminal in your trunk by your spare tire, then push the gas about 3-5 time and plug the battery back in. voila!

Usually you can simply disconnect the negative battery terminal (while vehicle is not running), wait a few seconds, then reconnect it. I've used this to reset the warning light on a 1989 Chevy pickup (and other makes & models).

The only way to erase the check engine light on a 96 and newer vehicle is with a SCANNER ALL 96 and newer cars, truck, and SUV's have a computer that's called OBD II (On Board Diagnostics generation 2) The "remove the battery cable trick" only works on some 95 and older vehicles

Disconnect the neg battery terminal, wait 15 mins, then reconnect, but DO NOT START YOUR TRUCK! wait 30 mins then start.....Why? you ask, computers in Chevys and Fords had about a 100th of the speed as your desktop computer, so when the battery is reconnected it takes about 20-30 mins to reboot properly.....also you will get better gas mileage...at least 2mpg better.

These may work; I don't know. I do know if it works, but the actual problem that caused it to come on isn't fixed. It will come back on again when computer reads it.Most autoparts stores will do a free check on your car with an OBD reader. It will tell you what's wrong; could be a bad censor to your fuelcap being loose. Try that route for permanent fix.

un-hook the negative battery cable from the battery for 15 minutes and then re-attach cable.

p-1870 is a power train code my engine light came on recently the code said trans comp. slippage I'm thinking it is a transmission problem however I'm not having a transmission problem I removed the code erased it 3 months later the service lightcame on again I had the auto store check it with there obdll decoder it stated transmission transfer case 4x4 short circuit sitch possibly I bought the switch today have not put it on roghly $15 dollars I'm more than certain that is and has been my prolem all along a possible short in the switch plus today I noticed the 4wd indicator switch was not working properlyIt would not engage in either 4 low or 4 high .A dealeronce told me that the p-1870 code was hard to diagnois if i cannot figure the code correctly I will go to the horses mouth G.M. so far so good everyone that has an interest in their vehicle should buy a reasonable decoder I have the Actron about $80 dollars it has helped me save some money I hope some of this will be a benefit to some... The crankshaft sensor code is generic for a general ignition problem. It can be the spark plug wires, or fouled plugs. Most likely, you have one or two bad ignition coils that need to be replaced (this was the case with my 97 SL2 with that code). In my SL2, I replaced both the 1/3 & 2/4 coils (about $80 total) and the code disappeared and hasn't been back since.

Use a code scanner to find out what's wrong with your VW.

You should go to a dealer and get the error codes read. The Engine light in your car is for OBDII, or on board diagnostics next generation, hence the II. This light is on due to a problem with your emissions system. A few simple solutions is to make sure your gas cap is firmly closed, and that it actually fits, or if you just changed the type of gas you normally use, go back to that brand. Different brands, differnet types of refinement, octane etc etc... There are a few serious problems along with your check engine light. A few examples are as follows. 1. O2 sensor is not functioning 2. EGR valve is not functioning. 3. You could be having a misfire (your CEL would be flashing at this point) These are just examples. Take it to a dealer to be sure. Anyone can clear a code, but in the long run, the light will come on again, and you will still have an undiagnosed problem. hope this gets you going in the right direction. Chris

Take vehicle to Autozone or any place like that and they will hook it up do a diagnostics machine for free to tell you why light is coming on. they dont have the most advanced machines but they are pretty accurate.

Flashing check engine lights means one or more cylinders are misfiring. Could be injectors, coils, plugs, wires, etc. Get it to a shop.

Mileage is not what determines when the trouble code is cleared. There specific criteria that has to be met before the light will turn off. For example some codes require that the car go's thru a specific number of drive cycles. A drive cycle would be the engine starts cold then fully warms up. Some codes require this to happen two times or more. Other codes require you drive the car at a specific speed for a certain length of time. Its very technical and specific.

Most manufatures answer is this for a loose gas cap:

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

• The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.

• A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.

The typical gas cap code should clear after you fill up and use about 1/3 tank of gas. But like the above says 3 ignition cycles so go drive your car and let it cool down three times.

It sounds like the brain box is going. Ford is known for that.

My 2004 F-150 light just came on as well. I was wondering the same thing but now notice it's running a little rough everynow and then.

My truck just passed 61,000 miles if that's the magic number.

The check engine light will stay on if a malfunction has been detected with the

emission control system and it will flash on and off if an engine misfire has been

detected - get it scanned for any trouble codes to diagnose and repair the

malfunction

1st Have the car scanned and see what cylinder and how long ago.

Figure out why and repair it.

If the last time it was detected was several key cycles, try re-setting the light and see it it comes back on. I still recomend a tune up though.

Auto Zone or Advanced auto parts can reset the light for you. They tell you they are not suppose to but many times they will.

Can mean many things ,to find out run thru obd scanner,can be done at auto parts or local auto parts stores

Grounding plug wire is a common cause check all of your spark plug wires and ensure they are in good condition (This can send a code of a misfire to the computer). Sometimes there is a loose vacuum line, EGR sensor not working, PCV valve bad or not completely hooked up. ( the PCV valve not on the intake will make your car really bog or die at low RPM.)

If those are all good it gets very technical. No good compression, Possible cracked head or block, bad head gasket etc...

ECU has detecte a problem with the emissions system. Can be a number of things. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part is being effected not necessarily the defective part.

Any OBD II code reader will do the trick.
