Check Engine Light

There are pages and pages and items that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked for codes with a scan tool. After repair light can be shut off with scan tool.

I do not have the exact URL for the page, but I know I have seen them posted on

allpar dot com (huge site, nothing but Dodge/Chrysler vehicles,repairs,info, etc. with a specific section on minivans.

You might already know this , but I post it anyway. To see the codes displayed, You insert key, turn on to accessories (not start engine), turn off, turn on, turn off, then turn to on again and left it in that position.

In a few seconds, you will see a cycle of "blinks" begin on the dash display, (left side of steering column in my 90' Grand Caravan). The code format is displayed in pairs.

Example: one blink, short pause, three blinks = Code 13

longer pause

Example: two blinks, short pause, five blinks = Code 25

End of cycle is always displayed last as five blinks, short pause, five blinks

I guess this code display is on many cars other that Chrysler/Dodge (Fords)

If your knock sensor is giving a true reading, you are probably using a fuel that does not meet the octane requirement of your engine. Could you possibly have filled up with 85% ethanol? If you continue running the engine while it is knocking, you will damage the pistons and experience run-on or dieseling. If your knock sensor is giving a false reading, you won't experience engine damage but you will get lousy gas mileage because the computer will try to retard your timing and change the fuel/air mix. Get it fixed. It is cheap.

You may have a faulty engine light. Or, you may have a serious problem with your car. You should take your car to a local mechanic for diagnostics.

To remove "insp" service reminder message on Vauxhall Agila May 2008 onwards; 1. With ignition off press and hold both clock and trip reset buttons. 2. Turn ignition on (Keep both buttons pressed) (No need to start the car) 3.Wait for "insp" message to flash three times and change to three dashes 4. release both buttons and turn off ignition 5. Most auto part stores can scan and determine problem

You have to leave a $200 deposit though, if you know the guy and he's pretty cool he'll go outside with you to help you plug it in so you don't have to go through all that hassle

Take your car to Autozone and have them hook their scanner to your scanner port. The scanner will display the code for the problem causing the light to come on. It will also tell you the area of your engine that is tripping the code to come on. Autozone does this service for free at most stores. It means the computer has detected a problem with the emissions system. A scan of the computer with an OBD2 scan tool will bring up a fault code stored by the computer. This code will tell you what part is being effected by the problem. It will not necessarily tell you the part that is defective, but rather what is being effected. To determine what is actually wrong requires the skill and knowledge of a professional. Unless you have this skill and knowledge, pay a professional to fix the problem and do not just throw parts at it.

It could be the temperature sensor you would have to see what code is tripping.

The answer is on page 11 in the owner's manual ( "Light is blinking" ). Engine is misfiring, bring it to a garage as soon as possible.

Bring it to a shop or an auto parts store where they can hook up an OBD II scanner and read the trouble codes. Turn the light off by either fixing the problems the codes tell you, or have the person reading the codes turn off the indicator light using the scanner.

If you are referring to the Check Engine light, then it is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part or system is being effected. Not necessarily the defective part.

Remove one of the battery post cabes from the battery for 5 munutes. Now learn how to retrain the computer because it is reset and upset also at this time.

Bear in mind too, that if you use the battery disconnecting method, you might lock up your radio. If you don't have it's security code, it can be a pain to get it working again.

To reset the check Engine light, Take off the battery connections overnight. Connect them in the morning and the light should be reset. This was answered on another question. Also ensure that the gas cap is on tight, That can also cause the "check engine light to come on, You should hear 5-6 clicks when you tighten the gas cap. .

Recently had the same problem, thanks to my wife. Took it to CTC and was told to check the gas cap and tighten it, then run the car for a few days. This was enough to finally have it go out...took about a day and a half to rebuild pressure.

No, no, no... you don't have to put it back on. They make a bypass for it that you can buy off of eBay and if you really just want the "super-easy-fix", take out the bulb.

A catalytic converter is designed to burn any raw fuel or other hydrocarbons that get past the combustion chamber. If it's large enough to handle the exhaust, it's ok to use an aftermarket converter. If you have a single exhaust system, you only have one converter. If it's a TRUE dual exhaust, you'll have 2.

Engine code P0507 mean High idle speed. Check out the the idle speed control motor(ISC). LOCATED near the throttle body.

Disconnect the positive cable on the battery and reconnect it that should reset it. If there is a true problem it will come back on. or go to an advance or autozone and they will erase the code for you free.

At least one "dead" cylinder (no spark). If you drive it like this, the light will start to flash, after you have done irreversible damage to your catalytic converter.
