Why would your car be idling low and rough?

I have left some lengthy explanations on WikiAnswers, but even I cant type out all the reasons this could be happening. There are simply too many to list. You could have a vacuum leak, a faulty IAC vlave, a computer control problem, a faulty MAF sensor, bad gas, clogged air filter, stuck open EGR valve, insides fallen out of the PCV valve, low fuel pressure, ignition misfire, sticking lock-up clutch in the automatic transmission torque converter, restricted exaust system, anything driven by the belt that is dragging severly, anything inside the engine that could be dragging, a timing belt or chain that has jumped, and the list goes on forever....

Is the tbi as good as the equivalent carb?

In many ways it's better.

Detroit started using TBI as a way of controlling the amount of fuel that is delivered to the engine. The sensors, computer and controls put on a TBI engine allow the manufacturers to deliver the minimum amount of fuel to run the engine without burning valves and pistons.

Carburetors typically deliver too much or not enough fuel and with a few exceptions, do not really deliver any more power. ---- Like red said, tbi, efi, is the way to go, although if your car is equiped with a carb, don't be placing a tbi unit where the carb was, there's much more to it than that, ECM computer, sensors, wiring harness, high volume fuel pump, distributor, ect. Better off just rebuiling the carb or buying a good reasonable edelbrock or holley OEM replacement. jr

Spark plug gap 305 79 Chevy Caprice?

Factory about 35. I usually go about 45, but no more than 60. Most hot rodders run as wide a gap as they can get away with & even index sometimes. Usually when you buy, the gap is about dead on to specs. measure a new one. If they are the washer type, you will feel it compress when you tighten-don't over do it.
