The gearshift lever release button in my Jeep Cherokee won't disengage. The gearshift moves through the gears but the button remains stuck in and the key won't come out of ignition?

I had this same problem occur about three years ago in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee when I went to lunch from work. Since I was away from home, I didn't have tools to try to examine or fix the problem myself. Since I couldn't shut off the engine or remove the key, I drove straight to a Jeep dealer. As I recall, it was the gearshift interlock cable that had worn out. Also, the ignition key mechanism was dry and they apparently used WD-40 to free up the frozen workings. I know they used this in the key opening because I could smell the WD-40 there when I picked up the vehicle that evening after they fixed it. I wish I could be more helpful. Good luck.

How do you change out the ignition mechanism on a 97 Breeze that has recurring problems with the ignition cylinder?

FYI: this is all in a Chilton's/Haynes manual 15-20 bucks at all automotive stores. disconnect the battery. wait a few min for the residual energy to disapate. take off the plastic around the steering columb. should only be 3-4 screws on the underside. place the key in the ignition and turn to the "run" position. look up into the underside of the columb. on the left hand side is the ignition switch and to the right is the ignition cylinder. on the switch you will see a TORX screw. undo the screw (no 10, i think). the switch should be removable now--there may be another screw, i can't remember. anyway, remove the switch. it can easily be replaced just like it came out. but make sure it is in the exact same way it came out. the cylinder notches into the switch in only one direction. you may have to play with it. i did. Note: when you turn the key it turns a spring-loaded mechanism inside the switch and activates certain contacts. i.e. start-run-stop-acc. the cylinder can only be removed if the key is in, and in the "run" position. it will just pull out. once you pull it out, you can remove the key and examine it for damage/wear. if it's bad, it's usually expensive to replace (here in Hawaii it's nearly 200bucks) install in reverse order hope this helps, David Dub Tek Motor Werks,Hawaii

What does a fuel pump relay look like on a 1993 Chevy blazer?

On the 93 Blazer it will look like a small black plastic box about the size of a walnut. It would be found under the hood, attached to the firewall, drivers side, close to the power brake booster. It will have a removable electrical plug with several wires attached to it.

Can you put wheels with a 4 inch backspace on a 4x4 blazer when the stock wheels have a 6 inch backspace?

It's actually called an offset, and this is assuming that both wheels are the same width. What it means to you is that the wheel will be further toward the outer fender than it was before. That will give a tiny bit more stability as long as you are not trying to go huge with the tire and you should be fine. The shallower offset will let you put a wider tire on and still have inside clearance, but you may need to lift the suspension to clear the outer fender when wheel is turned to the stops left or right. Stock tires and the shallower offset will put the tire further out giving the illusion of wider wheels and fuller fenderwells without actually putting the bigger ones on.

What could be the problem if a 2004 Envoy will not start?

Start with the obvious. Bear with me. Does it have fuel? Did it recently run out of fuel? Is the battery charged? Are the battery cables hooked to the correct terminals? Red should be on the + and black on the -. Are all the belts tight? The alternator needs to charge the battery after each use. If all of these are fine, it could be something electronic went on it. Have a mechanic run a diagnostic test on it.

Why might a 2000 Ford Focus manual transmission not accelerate when the gas pedal is pressed even though the engine revs up?

Answer

The clutch is worn out or needs adjustment.

Or, you are just not utilizing the button under the shifter knob, that releases the transmission out of overdrive. You will find that the transmission will keep up with the RPM's if it is not in overdrive.

EDIT: There is no overdrive button for a manual tranny, that's what the 5th gear is for. If the RPMS are going up and the speed isn't, it's time to have your clutch examined.
