Why didn't the US overthrow Castro?
Castro took charge of Cuba in 1959. The US tried to invade and overthrow Castro's government in the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion; the country repelled the US forces. Cuba had become allies with the Soviet Union in 1959, and after the failed US invasion attempt, the Soviet Union and Cuba agreed to secretly station nuclear missiles in Cuba. The US was already experiencing tension with the Soviet Union; if they attacked Cuba again, the Soviet Union/Cuba would react by initiating war via the missiles. The Cuban Missile Crisis brought the US to the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union, and after the removal of the missiles was negotiated, the US backed down because they didn't want tensions to heighten again. This happened during the Cold War, which started in 1947 and didn't end until 1991. The embargo set up by the US against Cuba in 1962 is still in effect today; other US interactions with Cuba have been minimal.
His major achievement in the cold war was pressuring Russia successfully not to install missiles on Cuba. He seriously threatened Russia with an atomic war if it didn't back down and you can only shudder to think what would have happened with the planet if Russia had not given in.
JFK's assassination sent a shock wave through the USA and many other countries. His successor, President Lyndon B. Johnson energetically - and very possibly more energetically than Kennedy himself would have done - continued Kennedy's policies. On the plus side, it made Johnson one of the 'great' Presidents in his domestic policies. He managed to successfully steer his 'Great Society' legislation through Congress concerning civil rights, voting rights, Medicare and Medicaid. He also had the Civil Rights-legislation passed that had been drafted under Kennedy. He also started many projects of urban and inner-city development and successfully developed the "War on Poverty". Unfortunately Johnson showed the same energy in continuing the Vietnam war that Kennedy had allowed to develop. America's involvement could not stop Communist North Vietnam's progress, and the war became highly impopular in the US, mainly because of the draft that forced millions of families to see their sons off to the battlefield and that saw over 210,000 US casualties returning home dead or wounded, most of them draftees. The failed Vietnam War in the end defined Johnson's presidency more than his very important domestic achievements. How many US generals killed since Vietnam?

Why isn't communism really communism?
True communism isn't practiced by a major power anywhere in the world today. Instead, the politico-economic system currently practiced by China (and which used to be employed by the Soviet Union) is called socialism.
A very simplified explanation of the difference is that socialism is set up and controlled by a central government, whereas communism is controlled and maintained at the local (people) level. The only practical example of true communism can be found in the system known (appropriately enough) as a commune, similar to the kibbutz farming communities found in Israel.
